Title: Apple madness
Post by: no golf clubs at all on March 31, 2011, 12:53:50 pm
I think I am driving myself dolally.

THERE. IS. NO. REAL. REASON. to upgrade an ipad1 to ipad2, other than the cameras, the lightness and the speed....ok I can use iMovie on it too....but I realised, thanks to the Guardian today (barstewards) that I can trade in my 64Gb 3g ipad1 and get £365 from speedsell and take this together with my old iphone 3g which is doing nothing but gathering dust in a kitchen drawer, get £107 therefore making the cost to change (assuming the company honours the original quote)...allowing me to upgrade for £87!

Please feel free to publicly flog me, I must be talked out of this foolishness else I will end up like this bloke......

^^^^^^

example of selling prices (guides given to me by ebay)

iPhone 3g 8gb - £230 (approx)

Ipad 1 64GB 3G - £450 (approx)

Total - £680.00

But I would agree that unless you play games (which i don't) - or enjoy taking pictures of yourself (i am not going to comment on) it is just not worth it !

Or until Apple bring down the walled garden and give ipad OSX type software to allow you to move data on and off your ipad and allow you to use flash memory like every other tablet maker it really wont be long until they have to do this to keep up with honeycomb devices.

I tend to try and not get caught up in the yearly upgrade scam, I'll still got a 3GS with a view to waiting for the iPhone 5 - there's just not that much of a leap forward to make me spend the money.

Its worth waiting as everyone says. Apple have it all planned thats for sure

Although you would probably do well to sell the 3GS now as thats only going to go down in price, as most are sold on to supply spares to repair phones or for reclaiming of NAND chips or gold.

The iPad 2 is a stop-gap to keep up with the influx of other tablets into the market. Hence the reason why the 'upgrades' are so small. IMHO there is no real need to upgrade from the iPad1 to iPad2, there's just not enough there to warrant the extra cost.
The iPad 3 is rumoured for the end of this year - around the final quarter. I think that this will be more of an upgrade, maybe with a retina display etc. I would wait for that instead........

To be honest if you play the "waiting" game you will wait forever. Apple change the iPhone and iPad on a yearly basis (or thereabouts) so if you wait for the rumoured iPad 3 (which i dont think we will see till Xmas at the very earliest) you may as well wait another 12months for the iPad 4, then for the iPad 5 etc etc.

I went from a 3G iPhone to the 3GS then to the 4. (the difference between the 3GS & 4 is massive Tony). Each time i do so (because of my contract) it cost's me nothing to change and i was actually £37 better off last time i changed.

I got the iPad on launch however haven't upgraded to the iPad 2 as the one i have now does everything i want it to (and the wife said i can have an iPad or a new car. iPad lost ). The only time i will consider a change of iPad is when they increase the memory.

I really don't see the point of having a load of extra add ons for the iPad either. If you want to be able to use it like a computer/laptop then buy one of those. If you want a portable entertainment device which also enables you to do productivity on the move, read books, browse the internet, play games, watch videos or listen to music then buy an iPad.

As soon as you buy the latest device it is already 6 months out of date anyway. The final decision on the production model of that device was made 6 months earlier and it was put into production then launched. In the mean time said manufacturer is already 6 months into developing the successor so you are always going to be behind the curve.

Couldnt agree more with you Carl, but its true to say, with Apple for example, sometimes its worth waiting that little bit longer!

You can never be up to date. Having worked in the mobile industry, you get people that want the latest and greatest phone. Reality is that the minute they leave the shop, there will already be a new idea or a new handset launching which is better. The turnaround of technology is rapid these days

I also got the iPad on launch and see no need to upgrade. Ok the new one does a few more things, but the current does everything I need and more, so why spend more money on something to gain little improvement

Thanks Guys

I think at least what I will do is sell on my iphone 3G whilst it is still worth something.

I will track some on ebay and see what they go for to get an idea of the difference between this and the wholesale buyers...to be honest I am unsure if I can be bothered with the hassle of ebay so many people get stung selling tech there these days.

that said I am sure selling to a wholesale buyer I am sure is far from plain sailing either.

Thanks for the input team. I think you have saved me and my money from the upgrade.... (for now).

I sell my phones using mazuma normally. Yes you could get a bit more on the bay but as you say there are so many knobhead buyers on there it isn't worth the risk and i just use eGay for buying stuff now.

I just sold 3 phones via Mazuma was rather painless, they sent me an envelope to send them off paid postage I added the extra for recorded about 70p and got lots of emails as they arrived and once they were checked and money straight into my bank account on day of receipt really quite an impressive slick machine and no quibble over the price given by the website.

No, I appreciate it is a decent upgrade, but it just wasn't enough of a leap forward and worth it to me - I don't use that many features on the phone and as work pay for my contract and I just buy the phone it didn't seem worth it.

What do you want as a leap forwards though?

iPhone 4 has over 3GS

Better Screen
Better Bluetooth
Faster Processor
Faster & More memory
Better Camera
HD Video Recording
LED Flash
Front Camera enabling Facetime
Three Axis Gyro
Dual Mic with Noise Supression
N Class Wifi
Better battery life for Talk & Internet

Just curious as to what else would have tempted you across? :happy2:

Fonebank always used to pay the best prices. Some of the phone places are shysters, though and will inform you that the phone was non-functioning when it arrived and only give you half the agreed value (fonebank don't do this btw). Best to read reviews first!

Never had that problem with Mazuma.

Not tried fonebank but will have a look at them when it comes to getting the I5 :happy2:

I agree that playing the waiting game isnt the best choice when it comes to Apple products - I also upgrade my iPhone yearly etc. The 3Gs to the 4 was a good upgrade, due to the number of changes etc. The iPad to the iPad2 isnt a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion, because the updates are rubbish. We have what, 3 or 4 developments?? It was released to keep up with all the other tablets in the market. Apple were forced to release an earlier then planned update because of this, and I believe it ended up with a product which is aimed more for a newer audience - those without an iPad to date - rather then to those who already have an iPad. If you really needed an iPad now I would save some cash and go with the iPad 1 to get you by for the next few months. The iPad 3 will be a bigger update.

Apple are known to bring out the bigger updates every 2 years, or after every 2 cycles. iPhone is a classic example, and now the iPad. The item comes along, then a small update in between, before the next 'big' update comes along. With the iPad, I'd rather wait for the next big update as my current iPad does everything I need it to do perfectly fine. I would have probably done the same with the iPhone this year, as I believe it will not be a huge update - a slightly bigger screen, and a speed boost maybe, more like a iPhone 4s, rather then an iPhone 5 as such - but my contract ends in June so will look for a decent deal if one is available.....

My contract allows to me upgrade 6 months early for free. As i only ever get 18month contracts it ties in nicely with iPhone release. :happy2:

Not just a pretty face me

LOL, you don't have to sell it to me, I know how good it is..

I use the phone for calling, texting, emailing and surfing - nowt else. The 4 didn't really do much more in those fields than the 3GS. I bought an iPhone because I like the GUI, I work with tech all day, I can't be arsed bringing it into my out of work life in the same sort of way.
