Title: Can you help me identify my Sat Nav (and help get the dam thing working)
Post by: Spikey on March 31, 2011, 10:52:20 pm
Hey all

Just joined up, bought a GTi yesterday and while the dealer was showing us the bits and peices, he went to turn the Satnav on, and nothing.  Nothing happened.   After a few attempts, we managed to get it to come on, but 5 seconds later, turns itself back off again.

We were informed that the unit is not a genuine item, and after a bit of digging, i've found that there are many companies who make an OE look piece.   So can you help me identify it?

As a good will gesture, the garage gave me a 6CD touch screen unit which i believe is out of a mk6.   Another question i have, is will this be ok in my 55 plate golf?  I have read about some Gateway item which may need to be changed to prevent the battery from draining.   Here are some pics and part numbers of that unit....

Any help would be very much welcomed!  :happy2:

Reload the maps on the SD card again on the old unit. Format it on PC and put the software on.

Look on eBay theres a few ask them what nav they use and download it, they are all based on the same software so ask anyone selling a replica of the original units.

Should work ;)

Alternatively ask apollo13, he had a replica unit and might know the name of the nav software ;)

As for the new unit, being an RCD510, there is a good chance you will have problems using that in a 55 plate golf with regard to battery drain. If its a VW dealer, I would have said you should demand an RNS510 and a new can gateway as its not your fault its got an imitation HU

Have you tried pressign the tiny little reset button on the front?

If it was me I would whip that after market unit out get a new gateway and put the RCD510 in will add value to the car!  As said worth telling the garage you cant use there good will gesture without a replacement gateway if they managed to source and RCD510 easily enough they should be able to get and fit a gateway for you.

Thanks for all the responses guys, really appreciate it.

@Betty - I am just writing an email to that company off ebay to see if they can identify my problem with the aftermarket unit.   Hopefully they will have enough experience to help.

@ Alex - I doubt they'd give me a RNS510 as the car was never advertised to have satnav as it was an aftermarket unit.   I don't see why they shouldn't give me a new can gateway mind.

@ Rich - I have tried the rest button a fair amount of times.  When pressed, the source button lights up but nothing else happens.  Tried many different sequences of buttons to try and make it work.

Hi I had one similar to this and had NO problems with it whatsoever!(But I know many that have)

I actually sold it to another member and he hasn't either.

The software on it was Igo8 and to be honest the nav knocked spots off my RNS510.

@ Apollo - Thanks for that mate, i have looked on the card and there is some Igo8 stuff on there, just can't get the dam thing to fire up properly!  :scared:

@ Alex - Live a bit further East now in a place called Horndean!  Bit of a trek to and from work, but at least i'm not using the GTi! haha

So is there anyway i can check to see which gateway i have and if it would be compatible with the RCD510?  There is always a chance the gateway has been upgraded by the previous owner.

Is there anyway i can tell if the battery is in fact draining if i were to install the RCD510?   We are getting very bored of a lack of music in the car!  :indifferent:

VCDS is the quickest way to check. I am actually up your way tomorrow morning - have to go to winchester if you fancy meeting up. PM me  :happy2:

Can even help you swap it and code it in

The only way to tell is to install it and see what happens. Often guranteed if its below a K that youll end up with a battery drain unfortunately. Though, it does depend what software version the unit is running (out of a mk6 golf will be the later ones though)

What needs to be coded in?  Bar the four digit code?

You occasionally need to code the car to accept a newer radio like that

So I've had a reply from the eBay company who have suggested disconnecting all the wires and then reconnecting. The also mentioned especially the can bus decoder. If I do that am I going to need to get stuff coded?

I wouldntve thought that headunit works on can bus. Theyd be talking about a quadlock to ISO convertor that converts the canbus signals for reverse, speed, and a few other bits.

Currently have the dash in bits.   I have unplugged the old unit and refitted as per instructions given to me by the ebay seller but no joy.  It still does exactly the same thing.

I've tried the RCD510 also, now that works, but the two aerial socks won't fit the two socks on the back of the stereo.

I really am stuck with what to do, The CD changer in the arm rest was not connected up to the old headunit, but i can connect it to the RCD510, but then i run the risk of draining the battery.

Decisions, decisions.

This is ideally until i can get something else sorted as we currently have no music in the car whatsoever.

I thought the RCD510 was meant to flatten the battery in a matter of a week? Not two days. Jumped in her tonight and was flat as a pancake. Going to have to tale the head unit out and refit the broken one. At least it'll look nicer than a gaiping hole. Booked the car back in at the dealer so they can sort out this mess. :(

It can be as short as a day...just depends on the age of your battery, can bus version, drain its pulling etc.

New can gateway and all will be resolved.

Had a reply from the ebay company who sell these items.   The double beep when i refitted the stereo means there is a hardware issue.  :indifferent:

Just to go wait now until vw sort it on the 18th.

Yeah a little distant!   hehe

I was thinking about saying no to be honest, i'm not sure i want to take the dash apart again, to then take it back out a week later for then the dealer to fiddle.  Seems like so much hassle! lol
