I hope you mean replacing the ones you already have :scared: if not getting some springs will certianly help :signLOL:
On a serious note lots of people change the springs to lower the car slightly which will improve handling due to lower centre of gravity and some are also stiffened, lots of threads on it :happy2:

Eibach Sportlines are an option worth considering, top quality and drop by 20mm but Weitec, H&R and KW offer good quality lowering that work well with standard dampers. Opted personally for Eibach as the Eibach pro dampers are valved by Eibach Sport. They work together pretty well.
Worth remembering though that there is no extra charge for changing dampers if your changing springs anyway.
-
thanks alot... i was lookin to drop it about 40-50mm? do eibachs drop this low?
-
I think the spring kits stop at 30mm.
You'd need coilovers to get any lower :happy2:
-
oh is it... what springs r they?
-
I have a box for some Eibach springs, and it says on the box, lowers the car up to 50mm.
(not sure if you need a few bags of sand and an R32 engine in the front to get that though?!)

lol is it worth lowering it 20mm? is it noticeable?
-
I used H&R springs that were £90 + £155 to fit. and they lowered about 25mm, I noticed the difference.
Coilovers give the real drops, but you pay a bit more for those.

They were used. But mint. Got them off golf gti forum. Hey come up a fair bit there.

Sounds like a steal mate! I'm keeping my eyes open for a set but booked a holiday which is robbing me of mod money! :fighting:
-
I recently had h&r springs fitted 30mm, the height perfect £200 from awesome and £180 to fit them any lower you could get rubbing. :happy2:
-
Go on the Eibach website, it say something like 20-25mm I think but all I really can qualify is that the drop on Sportlines is as far as you'd want to go without rubbing and bumping. I'll post some pics when I get a chance but the front tyre sits almost on the wing rim and so does the rear. Looks well low to me but it's what YOU want at the end of the day. The Gti is'nt exactly high to start with so this drop makes a big difference.
The handling is still really good too and doesn't bump-stop or rub and handles really well, only thing now is some new anti-rolls and some new bushes.
For me any lower for road use would just be a nightmare to drive on anything other that the Rockingham Speedway short circuit.
Pics coming this week, but sure someone else has done this already.
-
Go for the H&R mate, only reason I would change mine is if I change to coilovers or go mad and get air ride
-
so its between H&R and Sportlines...i'll check them both out. any pics of the H&R?

Any decent links for the springs?
Looked through an old thread that had discounted Sportlines for £106 delivered from euro car parts but the discount code don't work anymore :sad1:
Cheapest I can find is £135+

I would have them myself but I am Keith Flint!
-
Sportlines do look mint Keano, as your car shows.
Do you like the handling too?
-
Thankyou :happy2:
Yes. Handling is much better. Alot more confidence inspiring!

I bought these the other day, should hopefully be fitted soon(ish!) lol

I have found that since I changed the springs, when I'm traveling at a good speed on a bumpy road that the car is quite bouncy, almost a little out of control and feels like the tyres are wacking the wheel arch. If I had known this in advance of fitting them I would have upgraded to firmer shocks at the same time.
BTW I have a GT Tdi so the shocks may well be softer than a GTi or ED30
-
Might have missed a thread but daboy3000 it normally works the other way round with Diesels on suspension. The engine is normally much heavier than a petrol so the the spring rates and damping will be stiffer and heavier to make compensation.
What Springs did you upgrade to and did you make the upgrade to your standard shocks?
Gti petrol springs just wouldn't handle very well on a Diesel front end as you're running an Iron block which is massively heavier than the Ally block the Gti has, you'll defo get loads of bounce because of this and the dampers will be useless at the same time.
Correct me if I'm missing something here but it seems the case.
All the best
-
I fitted eibach pro sport 25mm drop, standard shocks. What's the best way to sort it out with out make the ride too hard and spending lots of money?
-
Who fitted them?
They should have fitted the Pro kit specifically for your car, for your car it should offer a 30mm drop which makes it the same as the petrol GTi.
The part is very different though, your car needs a spring to handle 1130kg load front and 1010kg rear and the GTi Petrol only needs to handle 1040kg front and 930kg rear. Part numbers are different and so are the springs, well worth checking.
Sounds to me like you've got petrol car springs and that would explain you're problem, my set up with Sportlines and Pro Dampers gives some bounce at around 100mph but it's a firm and positive form which corrects instantly and doesn't ever ground out and the car always remains really planted.
Just not as comfortable at speed as the original set-up but you will forgive that when you meet a corner. It's incredible for the price.
You'd have to go to a really well set up KW3 if you want a seriously good set-up and the dosh goes up too.
Go to Eibach and check what you have on your car and take it from there
-
I ordered them myself from europarts for the tdi and AMD fitted them, don't get me wrong its not all over the place and I have just come from a Porsche so maybe I'm making it sound worse than it is. But I will look to upgrade the shocks at some point.
-
Fair do's, sorry if I sounded condescending. Love the Porsche and having driven the new cars know they're incredible so maybe that's the problem!
Questioned my suspension too after jumping from an 09 C2 sport - but then you would wouldn't you?
The Pro kit, if the correct spring, should work really well on your standard shock but if it's not that bad then maybe that's as god as it gets.
But still well worth checking those part numbers as EuroParts can be really good for some replacement parts but don't really come up trumps when it comes to upgrades and like any company can make mistakes. I've had to cross-check part numbers with them and VW and found them to be wrong in the past on discs. Could get your money back if they got it wrong so worth a go.
