Title: I'm unsure what to do?
Post by: MJR on April 02, 2011, 01:23:59 pm
Right I'm in 2 minds as to what to do regarding my wheels.
Either:

Keep my 17" GTI wheels on, spray them black & get car lowered
or
Buy 18" Monza's and spray them black

But trying to find a set of genuine 18" + tyres is hard and very expensive (don't wanna spend too much just for wheels, keep my dosh for other performance mods)
Before people say, I wanna keep monza's as I love the look of them, so wouldn't change to another alloy.
So thought I'd throw it out there & see what other peoples views are & if they've had the same dilemma before.

Cheers mucho MJR

You can get the Vredestein Sessantas (don't know the correct spelling) reasonably cheaply for 18" wheels.

You will lose something in the ride quality but IMO the looks far outweigh this small loss.

Out of the 2 you said...I would go for the 18" monzas in black...

Best thing to do is go on ebay, loads of people sell them individually, and they usually only cost about £60 each, curbed, but can be refurbed cheaply.
I personally would not have them in black, as you lose the lines when looking at them side on.

See I think CW look awesome with black wheels, but once I actually buy the 18", I might change my mind about painting them black once I see them on my car.

I would just spray the 17s black if you want black wheels. Whos going to notice the difference when there black anyway especially if the cars moving.
Theres a mk6 on another forum with black painted 17s and i thought they were 18s for over a year.

 :signLOL:

Always an option. I'll keep my eye for a reasonable priced set of 18", if nothing comes up think I will just paint the 17" black

I tend to agree with Snoopy. Painting your 17" Monzas black will nearly negate any obvious visible size differences.
I am not partial to black alloys as they look decidedly chav IMO. But ETTO.

With the money you save by not changing to 18" wheels and tyres, you can invest in some really good tyres like the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2s. In 17" size they are not that costly. I would avoid the Vredesteins in any size as they are not very good in any respect.

Defo get some 18's mate and personally I would go for a satin black. Like other people have already said, you loose the definition of the wheel when its gloss IMO but if you go for a satin finish you get the best of high worlds.

Nothing wrong with the verderstien tyres on my car. For cost they are a fantasic tyre. Coped rather well on a recent track day to.  also I think if you do the 17" ones your always going to think, wish I had got some 18" ones.

I'm hopefully going to get my 18" monzas done in gloss black soon

MJR:
A compromise on wheel colour for your white car would be anthracite. Yes, 18" would be better than 17" in the looks department, but for practicality 17" on our broken tarmac would hold sway both for the improved ride quality and safety from kerbing.
I've got 18" Monza Shadows on mine and I am for ever in a worried state in case I kerb them. Hence it is prudent to choose tyres with good rim protection.
Rim protection on Bridgestones 5.5 mm, on Continentals 5 mm, on Goodyears and Michelins 4.5 mm. The rest of the tyres around are pretty useless in this respect.
Best of luck in your search.
