Can the iPhone 4 be unlocked? Just got one on T-Mobile for £230 brand new.
Thanks.
-
Yes mate. Is it second hand? Or does it need setting up?
If so you will be on 4.3.1 when you set it up which requires a tethered jailbreak and unlock. (redsn0w)
However if you want to do it legit and have a friend on T-mobile you can send it to them (via him/her) and they unlock it for around £20 over about 2 weeks

Its brand new so not even been switched on yet.
Just rang Orange for a new sim and they want £10 a month to send me one out because im not on an iPhone tariff. :surprised:
Whats this (redsn0w)? Your going to have to break it all down into simple terms here
-
Watch a guide on youtube, jailbreak takes less than 10 mins including downloading the software
(Green poison is the easiest I have used)
-
Greenpois0n isnt out for 4.3.1
All rumours point to an untethered jailbreak release today.
Ill get back to you if/when it does and explain how it works.
Im running 4.3.1 jailbroke on my iPad so will run it on there and make sure it works first.

o2 is best for iPhone tariffs. Get the simplicity deals.

Cheers, I already have a contract with Orange but got a Blackberry. Got the iPhone for a steal price of £230 so thought I would give it a try.
Not paying £10 a month on top of what I already to pay just to be transferred onto a iPhone tariff and not recieve any extra benefits.
What does the jailbreak do? Unlock to all networks?

They will be releasing the jailbreak (untethered) for 4.3.1 at 5am (monday morning) GMT

Ah cool, you will have to talk me through it, I have no experience with Apple products. Will I need to set the phone up to do this as I currently have the standard sim (not the micro)?
Also can I just cut it down as some people suggest ?
Just to confirm the jailbreak enables me to use the Orange network?
-
No an unlock will allow you to use other networks but i will need to confirm an unlock is possible on release.
You will need a micro sim or cut your own one up to fit though so you can set the phone up using iTunes prior to the jailbreak and unlock
-
Right cheers for the help, will try cutting a PAYG t-mobile sim up to set the phone up!!
-
With a jailbreak how do you put songs on? Just with iTunes as normal?
-
Managed to chop a sim up and according to iTunes im running software 4.2.1
EDIT: Now updating, complete NOOB.

I take it I cant sync all my music unless its jailbroken? :fighting:

Hey! You can do exactly the same as you would normally do with an un-jailbroken iPhone but MUCH more. Let me try and explain.
I have jailbroken my 4 and many of my friends iPods 3G's etc and you have different types of reasons for doing it. One reason is so you can unlock the carrier to let any network sim function properly. Two is to get certain apps that are unavailable through the app store (via Cydia: like wifi sync, myfi, 3G unrestrictor and the rest) that make your iPhone even more of a useful tool. And then you get the third type which is the pirate who wants all the apps for free. Once jailbroken you can download any app you want for free and you can also download free music and free films quite easily. I wouldn't advocate the third option as it is classed as illegal but the first two are not.
So don't worry about your phone becoming this flea infested buggy device because it will look and act the same as a normal iPhone. If all goes wrong you use a programme called 'Tiny Umbrella' to reset the firmware and use iTunes to do the rest and it will be back to normal and Apple have no way of finding out what you have been up to.
If you need any help or advice on what to do next I can talk you through it.

It wouldnt matter if Apple did find out as jailbreaking does not affect warranty :happy2:

Quite the contrary, it was made legal (a court in USA deemed it ok for users to crack there devices) last year, which was quite controversial, but Apple are fiercely keen to keep there devices un-tampered with.
All jailbreaking is an instant warranty VOID and trust me I watch this subject very closely.

I have various friends and contacts who have dealt with apple with jailbroken devices with no issues. Its a software not hardware mod and doesnt void warranty. Even if they did say no to something just update, clear the jailbreak and send it off, but its unlikely as it (as you said) was made legal as well.

That is interesting, I have not heard anyone say that before and I have not had any dealings with apple luckily but if I had to send my phone back I would reset the firmware in case jobsworth denied me my repair :signLOL:
Im taking my Grandma to buy an iPad 2 tomorrow but don't think i'll be jailbreaking that so quickly :scared:
-
Cheers for all that, not had a good play around with it yet as its still updating. Also its on the pay and go sim so just waiting to get it unlocked to get my Orange sim so the browsing can begin.

Not possible yet as its new hardware, Apple fixed the exploit used on the other devices
