After having suffered two long years of RenaultSport ownership, I am now finally ready to give up being a French Fanboy in return for some working windows and German reliability!
I currently have a Megane R26, which has given me nothing but grief (although when it does work, fook me its a blinding car to drive) and am looking to change it for an Ed30 Golf.
My main two concerns with the Golf are going for DSG or not; I spend a lot of time in motorway queues (M5/M6 change if anyone knows it?) so it makes sense, but I don't know if I'll miss having a manual. Also, my R26 handles exceptionally well (when the suspension isn't falling off!) and having driven a Mk5 GTI on Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised, but its not quite as sharp as the Meg (which has an LSD too). Soooo, what do folks do suspension wise? I don't mind spending some money on KW's or whatever people recommend.
Anyway, looks like a great forum so I'll be sticking around :)

I can`t offer you much in the way of advice as I`m a relative newbie to Mk5 Golfs and only trundle about in a diesel anyway :laugh:
I`ve driven ED30 for a while and I`m sure you wont be dissapointed :smiley:

Re. the DSG / manual dilema?
Hi, fairly new to the DUB scene! I had the same concerns when choosing between the DSG and manual option....? I love manual, but after much back n' forth and chatting with a mate who's works as car journo with Parkers, I decided to go for the DSG! I've had the car (MKV GTi) for about four weeks and I can enthusiastically say so far.... NO regrets! I don't have the paddles shift just stick sequential, but still extremely satisfying when you wanna have fun and some control. Or, engage 'Sport' and let it do all the work. D is fantastic on motorway traffic, jams, economical etc. I've had some envious mates in the passenger seat.. :wink:

I've pretty much made my mind up on DSG, so your post has just sealed the deal :)
Defo want one of the K04 models, just seen a well priced 09 plate Pirelli so might take a look at that.
I really wanted a white Ed30, but all of the colours seem to look the tits, so not too fussed now :)
Looking forward to getting one :)

Russ I remember you from the Clio and meganesport forums, I used to have an r26 liquid yellow and I only had it for just over 6 months before changing to a GTI, although I've just gone for standard not ED30.
GTI is different kettle of fish from r26 better all round motor but still very capable when needs be, better driving position which makes it more comfortable to drive mines feels like I'm driving a 200bhp sofa, that for me was one of the downfalls with an r26 was the lack of adjustment in the seats. I currently have a manual but will be considering a dsg when I look to change prob go for a mint ED30 or mk6.

Ello Russ I'm in virtually the same position as you but I couldn't live with my R26 and only kept it 4 months as it just didn't do it for me I mean yes It's a great backroad and track car but it just wasn't a good enough allrounder for me.
Anyway I'm looking to get a dsg ed30 next year if I get on with my gt tsi which I have to say is a great car so far and if I'm still enjoying it next year then I think I'll give an ed30 a go so do me a favour russ do us a mini review and let me know how you get on.

Is it the 5dr black model at garage in crosshills, west yorkshire?
If so please go over the car with a fine tooth comb, ive heard horror stories about the service provided from that garage.
I am in no way connected with the garage or trying to put you off finding the perfect car, i just know of certain stories that i cant comment about on a public forum.

I phoned about the pirelli gti at just under 16000. you can do a check onlline and its an import. then you do some more digging the reports about the garage are not great. perhaps its ok you never know. Ask yourself why there is no email address for the company.

I nearly got a GTI this time last year when I got the Meg, but figured it was better 'value' as its a lot more expensive for the same age/mileage.
As they say, you get what you pay for. Silly me.... oh well, at least I've seen the light now. Agree with the R26 comments too. I don't envy the person who buys mine!

It seems very harsh to slate a business, but if you google, 'Keighley trade centre' then you will have no end of horror stories on a variety of forums.
My knowledge without going into too much detail, is of people returning cars after less than hours of ownership with faults and being well lets say gentle escorted from the building.... need i say more...
Just please if you go, go with your eyes fully open. :happy2:

Got a great part ex deal on mine from a local Renault Used Car place, and they had an Ed30 in. It's black and manual, neither of which I wanted (lol!), but I've fallen in love with it :)
Eibach's are ordered, and I'll be a getting a set of BBS CH's in 19" within a week or so. I'll also be getting it remapped almost straight away at P-Torque, near me.
I pick it up 2nd May, can't wait :laugh: :jumping:

Just seen your post on MS mate.. Nice choice :happy2: Shame you didn't hold put for a DSG car, but if the right deal is there, it's hard to say no..
Oh and you'll be even more in love once she's mapped... :driver: Although I would probably look at other alternatives other than just P-Torque. Not saying P-Torque aren't good (quite the opposite in fact), but i'm not sure whether they offer supporting software for further stages of tuning and hardware (ie Stage 2, Stage 2+) if you decide to mod further later down the line..
You may be more than happy to stay at Stage 1, but if you spend much time on here, that will soon change.. :laugh:
