It seems like everyone is selling their car at the moment, there's going to be noone left on this forum with a gti at this rate! :sad1:
-
Fuel cost is the main reason, and the rising price of insurance :sad1:
-
If you look at TC, its amazing he's selling his GTI for a 2 seat MX5, I suppose a change is good as a rest though......
-

I understand that but there is a lot more things I'd sacrifice before my car.
-
I'm not selling

Good :happy2:
Neither am I by the way!

Me neither. Using it slightly less, but it's going nowhere without me in it!

Sky subscription for one, cheaper mobile tariff, less short journeys etc
-
There were a few reasons i sold mine. Price of fuel, car not getting any younger and needing the belts done soon, 1st baby on the way and the recent cold snap which meant the GTI was stuck in the driveway.
Kept it VW though and got myself a Tiguan sport. :happy2:

My thoughts too!
I think a lot of it is the time of year. When the weather improves (okay it's pee'ing it down outside my house right now but you get the idea!) people get new car and new house syndrome after months of being cooped up indoors. The motor trade always perks up this time of year.
Note how a load of the VAT FREE deals are finishing now on new cars.

That sounds perverse RR...

my mate has one that reads: "Sell my Volkswagen? I'd rather f*ck the dog!"
-
For me it's simply the space conundrum. If I didn't feel the need for something slightly larger then I'd certainly not sell it.
Funnily enough, this evening just by chance I parked up next to the same model of car I am planning on buying. Whilst walking away I turned to see both cars together, and no prizes for guessing which one stirred my emotions most!

Everyone's circumstances are different. Some people obviously have more responsibilities and out-goings that others...
Try running an R32 as daily driver. Just had my tax reminder come through. Up to £445 this year. Is it going anywhere? Not yet!
-
The tax on the R32 is scary. If it was circa £300 I wouldntve hesitated buying one, but I just couldnt fork almost £500 on tax, then MOT, insurance etc on it each year

The joys of motoring when you own a performance car!
My GTI will be staying with me for a long time yet :happy2:

Its worth every penny. I've got a lot of Shell points too.

I dont doubt that :signLOL:

You cant remap sound though can you? :signLOL:

Well... a hot hatch at least. GTI running costs aren't that bad as it's still just a Golf at the end of the day. Even Porsche and high-end Audi running costs make VW look like good value for money, that's what makes them great.
-
You cant remap sound though can you? :signLOL:
No, but you can super-charge.

I've had mine 3 years now, bought it in March 2008 when it was a 18 months old and 24,000 miles. She has only done 52k now and has never driven better.
I normally keep cars 3 years and want a change, I do have itchy feet but, as I can't actually work out what I'd like (good ed30 tops the list) I reckon I'm probably sticking with her for 2 more years.
Mk5 does everything well for me, it's not that expensive compared to a porker. I am thinking at the minute that I keep for 2 years stash cash away then find my oft dreamed of c4s 911.
In the interim she'll get new tyres, a couple of services and mots, I'll maybe eventually howk off those awful milltek quads and get a new valance. I've also got to replace a couple of corroded parking sensors which I'll do at next service or myself before. I'll maybe even treat her to a good detailing.
So on balance I'm going nowhere for two years and lining myself up for a car I've wanted since I farrah fawcett majors was hot.
-
Like the member above I bought mine new in March 08 and its time for a new one.I'm hanging on until next march due to the Tahoe adventure costing a bomb.Problem is I'm not totally sold on the MK6.I need to get in one, poke around a bit to whet my appetite.Until then I,m toying on moving to the 4 rings.

Does the mk6 have a k04 turbo? That would be a major factor for me.
-
Mk6 is a 2.0 TSI is it not?
-
Mk6 is a 1.4TSI is it not?
The GTI is 2.0T

Sorry meant to type 2.0 TSI. Same as the scirocco lump

I'm going to be hanging on to mine for as long as I can...

How tuneable is that engine?
-
Standard Revo
bhp 207 275
Torque 207 314
Thats REVO stage 1... pretty tuneable having a supercharger and turbocharger

Dont think so.. k03 of some varient i think!

It's not a borg-warner turbocharger, so not a K04. The turbo is by ITT IIRC, it's smaller displacement than the K03s.

I made a post the other day about different engines in use, the Golf R uses an EA113 block (with a borg-warner turbo, k04) and the Mk6 GTI/Scirocco/et al use the new EA888 block which has a small displacement ITT turbo.

2.0 TSI 210PS GTI
2.0 TSI 270PS Golf R
Not having a MK6 GTI I can only go on what I read :drinking:

MK6 GTI uses a IHI turbo same like their Czech brothers in the vRS.
From searching the interwebs plus figures seen from mapped ones I would speculate it lies between the KO3 and KO4 as the one I drove had a touch of lag compared to a KO3.

Cheers Hedge. I knew it was I something or other :P Would be interesting to get the figures on it.

"TSI" is a branding exercise for all new forced induction engines.
-
^^ What he said.
The mk6 GTI does say TSI on the engine cover etc etc... but its not twin charged and neither is the R
-
Silly VW :signLOL:
-
Lots of confusion in here! Pretty sure tuners are getting nigh on (if not over) 300 ponies out of the GTI VI. Makes me wonder why the older engine got put in the R? I guess the E888 gets heavy on the carbons when the power gets upped?
-
Or, cynically they had a load of them lying around and it was already a direct swap from the S3's platform to make it easy.
-
being TSi doesnt make it twincharged. the TSI can be either turbocharged or twincharged. some of the 1.4TSI lumps are just single turbo.
Also the Golf R/Cupra R etc whilst saying TSI on the engine cover and in the brochure is not a TSI at all but a K04 TFSI as found in the S3. you can tell that by the engine cover and relocated DV, amongst other things.
thw Golf GTI/octavia vRS 2.0TSI is a 2.0T with the turbo that hedge mentioned. The engine is more tunable due to being more efficient but also having a much more efficient air intake and a much more powerful HPFP. so no need for a stage 2+ HPFP remap.
The stage 1 2.0TSI cars with REVO make pretty much the same as a stage 2 k03 TFSI. When @ stage 2 they make around 280-300hp. so better for tuning.

It was already developed for big power (S3/Cupra) so there was very little development work to be done. E888 might re-map to high power but it doesnt/can't meet tough VW durability standards or Euro emissions legislation with just tweaked calibration. Beefing up the EA888 wouldve taken time and money, effecting the margins on R sales. Simple solution, tweak an existing, proven technology. Job done.
Nothing to do with engines lying around, they dont build anything they dont need! EA113 is considered to be a pretty strong engine. Over-engineered infact. The EA888 is cheaper and easier to build, how strong it is, remains to be seen.
To add to the confusion, I'm pretty certain there are EA888 variants with K03 turbos as well.

Also worth noting that a lot of standard MKVI GTIs are dyno-ing above 'factory' power out-put

The EA888 strength, the block, head, all internals according to the official documents were designed and repeatedly extensivly tested for ">100KW/L" and torque of ">175Nm/L"

Internals might be able to take it, but emissions are a totally different story. Not to mention varying fuel grades across Europe that all have to be considered. Bottom line, it was easier and cheaper to use the EA113. I'm sure project timescales contributed too. I've no doubt the EA888 could deliver similar power, reliably but to meet the R lanuch date and to keep within budget, the old engine was clearly the chosen route.

Ive only just got mine, yes its expensive to run and not to bad on insurance. But to solve that i bought a daily runner..
Id have to be proper skint to sell the Gti

Got an Ed30, it's not great on fuel but then it wasn't bought to be frugal.
Honestly doubt it will ever get sold.
Had it from new for 4 years, been tweaking the car a bit with mods the last few months, reckon it's just the right car for me.
Know I'm biased but think that the Mk5 GTi was a real class car, (esp Ed30 & Pirelli) and hope that 15 odd years from now, they'll look like a smart Mk2 Golf Gti looks nowadays.
Those cars had no 'safety' features bar seat belts and yet still exert a pull, especially if you used to own one.
Now a Mk5 with quite a bit of passive safety to it will likely be protecting it occupants to some degree when it's a 20 year old car so won't be old death traps.
So when we've all got hybrid/fuels cell/solar/Judge Dread style cars in the future and super unleaded is rare and expensive (V-Power £1.40 a litre will seem peanuts) - we'll all love the sight of a GTi with a nice exhaust note rumbling past.
Of course by then Golf GTi (Mk '12') will be a nice small hatch about the size of a Phaeton, 1100cc turbo..and John Connor will be the US President.

Very imaginative post Bernhard :congrats: I think with the people you have on the forum who are all enthusiastic about cars the fuel cost is of less importance and certainly not a reason to be selling up a treasured possession, the MK5 has just got to the age where the first owners are selling on for a new car or project, you will have those who have owned their cars from new like cmdfire and RR that will keep there fettled machines for years to come and others who will always have the itch to move on to something different. The forum wont end up empty you will just have a progression of people who pass through and the forum will evolve in the way there is a MK6 variation there will be a MK7 as well as other vag owners that share the platform.
I have had my car for just over a year now as a second owner and the journey for me is just begining and improving with the car doing everything I need at this time in my life. So it wont be leaving me for some years, I have to enjoy all the bits ive added first :ashamed:
And on a side note on a 2 hour drive yesterday from Woking to Northampton and back around M25 and up M1 the GTI managed 37mpg and well on for 400 miles out of this tank and I certainly wasnt taking my time getting up to the speed limit (admittedly the 50 average speed cameras helped but I wouldnt have managed that in my 1.6 focus, new plugs and coil packs have really transformed the car! :driver:
-
Although Cost of running my Ed30 is becoming an issue as a town runner or School Bus. There's always ways around it, like adding another 85bhp to my driveway, in forum of a new 1.2 Petrol fumes drinker.... the Hyundai i10 coming in the next 7 days..
At least i get to keep my prize possession, and get to use her when i feel the need to go Fast
Good times :star:

Erh, no, when then £2000 deposit was free money given (Sky TV shares Matured), and £110 a month on Finance is less then running £220 a month for the golf in Super unleaded currently.Free road tax first year then a huge sum of £20 a year for year 2 onwards. £200 fully comp car insurance.... 4 yr finance deal. Car has a 5 yr warranty..
So less wear n tear, less servicing, once a yr rather then twice a year currently with the GTi.
Fuel in the i10 is £80-90 a month on current mileage.. So im no worse off  nor better off
So in the grand scheme of things..................... not really :P in my situation.

To be fair to MR Saint, he gets to do less miles on his beloved Ed 30. Which is worth a lot and should not be dismissed when factoring the costs. :happy2:

To be fair to MR Saint, he gets to do less miles on his beloved Ed 30. Which is worth a lot and should not be dismissed when factoring the costs. :happy2:

I think I would have spent my £2000
free money on some Spare alloys (don't have to Pecsy's) and a whole load of V power.
Not to mention the Monthly payments, nor the extra TAX/Ins after the first year.
:happy2:

A mere £220 a month on fuel? Definitely not worth being seen in one of those for!

Your right Simon, it's the one reason why I wouldn't want to own an R32 with spiralling fuel prices. It's gone up another 3p this week.So much for the governments 1p reduction for all of two weeks, and again it's back on the escalator upwards.
The i10 is the wife's, I keep the keys to mine and use it when I feel like it .

I got loadsa spare cash, my mattress is nearly hitting the ceiling!
Seriously, I have no idea what I spend on petrol, maybe £100 a week on average? Sometimes, though, I can go a fortnight without visiting a fuel station and sometimes 3 visits in a week. It only feels expensive during the 3 visit weeks!

....I'm the same as you and I never even bother to look at the fuel receipt price but only how many litres I took onboard. It might be expensive but I wouldn't swop the joy of my car for anything else just for the economy. However, I don't have any mortgages any longer and my daughter's education etc costs are firewalled/ringfenced (to stop me buying a Lambo!).

Well I'm not selling anymore :pomppomp:
I had a bit of a drive up the A68, over Carter Bar to Jedburgh today and it totally reminded me just how great it is.
Add to that the fact I was looking at a max trade-in of £8200 for it and it's a no brainer!

....I haven't read your thread properly, just quickly scanned it, but does that mean you're not buying that Beemer estate, Andrew?

I had originally planned to buy a (used) 335d Touring, and sell my Golf. That car was sold however. In approximately 12 months we're going to need a second car, so keeping the GTI and buying a cheaper BMW seemed like a sensible idea, plus we'll be able to get rid of the bulk of the cost before our second born comes along, fingers crossed. Strictly speaking it will be my wife's car though.
