Hi Everyone, greetings from Sarf London!
Like a lot of people I've been reading the forum for a long time and built up a better knowledge of the cars. The recent death of my pride and joy and prompted me to finally sign up to this great site. Probably as part of my grieving process! Lol
I bought a gorgeous Tornado Red GTI 55 plate with sunroof, leather, winter pack and only 18k on the clock last summer. A month ago, a looney smashed into the back of my car, which twisted the chassis and has now been written off. To say I'm gutted is putting it mildly. I've had many many cars over the years from Escort RS 2000s, harriers, to a lot of BMWs. And I can honestly say my GTI was the best car I ever had.
Just waiting for my pay out now and getting back on the road... funny thing is, I read the site even more now! Lol
Cheers

hello
you used to have a jumpjet? impressive :innocent:
shame about your ride, do you plan to get another?
-
Welcome
.....and can I have you leathers???
-
You wouldn't want my leathers after what I've been up to in them! Ha ha
Definitely going to get another GTI. Just debating whether to go with another GTI which you can get for a good price with high spec, or go with my impulse and plump out another 1.5k for an Ed30 with low'ish spec.
I don't plan to remap whatever I get. I did find that my old GTI seemed to run out of puff a bit higher in the range. Ironically I bought a rev d dv a few weeks before her demise which is still sitting on my table.
From reading the forum, the eddie will def rev better higher in the rev range but I certainly wouldn't want to lose anything low end.
I had my heart set on getting another manual as the horror stories of the dsg's going wrong terrify me. Currently driving a BMW auto and the delay in kickdown drives me mad!
High spec GTI or lower spec ed30 for 1.5 - 2k more???
-
Get the Ed.30.
You will NEVER look back! :happy2: :happy2:
-
Cheers Keano, ideally I'd love a tornado red one like yours, and if the gods were looking down on me... one with a sunroof too :innocent:
-
Do you have to rev the nuts out of it to go anywhere?
-
Red ED30's are the way forward....though I may be a little biased!
Have you still got the car? Could sell some of the parts off it to fund mods for the new one
-
Unfortunately not, it was well and truly knackered and had to be lifted straight to the insurance's salvage yard :sad1:
-
Fair play. Sounds pretty ruined to be fair
-
Is there much of a delay in the kickdown when the dsg is in normal auto mode?
-
Almost none. The DSG is very clever and when you put your foot down, boy does it go.
-
Hmmm that's thrown the cat amongst the pigeons. Just got to consider possible reliability of them.
I get the feeling this site is going to cost me money! Ha ha
thanks for your input Alex :happy2:

Oh yes it does, oh yes it does!!
DSG for the win!!!!
-
Any red owner joining in waving the Red DSG Ed30 flag :signLOL:..
Do it :happy2:
-
Is there an official Red Army here then? :signLOL:
I'm just scared about the mechatronics going wrong. Are they really more economical than manuals in real life driving?
Cheers
-
^^^ Yes and Yes
Im not the ring leader .......honest
Dont get put off about reliability of DSG. The few cases of failures of mech's units are generally caught under warranty. Little or very few fail after long term ownership..
I cant remember a case of slipping clutches on an Ed30... Plenty remap manuals doing it though

Did you ask RedRobins permission before posting that Jack? :chicken:
He's one quick old chap
Suprised hes not giving the famous "one Finger" salute at you though Jack :P

Cheers guys, thanks for your input- really appreciate it.

Bit mis-leading that Steve.
To the Op - Do your homework, a poorly maintained DSG box is a ticking bomb, also there seems to be no predictable nature to the failures, fairly new boxes fail, with the same annoying regularity of older higher miles boxes, there are some very high miles boxes that are still good, (I believe RR's Mech unit has been in for 80+k since it was replaced many moons ago) and some with no miles that are not so good.
So check your service history, specifically the DSG history, google is your friend for further advice. Also remember a DSG owner is likely to be biased towards their preference. I Drive a manual, just prefer it, nothing against a DSG.
And my final bit of advice, think about a warranty, hate for it to go awry and you have to find it from your pocket.
-
Maintaince goes without saying ...
RR's failed before it's 1st service afaik..
Don't be put off by people that claim dsg mech's being a major issue when deciding whether to purchase or not.
Weigh up the pro's and Cons, and also do take note of what Real life owners say in what they think of dsg or S-tronic boxes.
Use the search function, there was a poll I posted with about failing mechs, which did seem to highlight cars in the 57/08 reg having more issues then others.
But what I can assure you, although QD says otherwise, it's not a Common problem to older cars, and that most had issues in manufactures warranty, less so out of warranty.
There was a dsg owners forum posted a while ago, but had little more then 20 members on as registered, with niggles, but again, not a forum with 100's of complaints. :innocent:
Again, with any purchase of a car from a dealer or garage, a years warranty is normally given, which would cover you in the possible event of you buying a car with a faulty mech's, that the previous keeper didn't disclose.
in guess I've been lucky, having owned 4 dsg cars with not one single issue, but there is a case of a new owner on another forum, who's had a 2nd mechs fail, but again, under warranty.
Good luck with your search
it's a great car And even better in my opinion with DSG :happy2:
Edit.....
Website in question...Not busy but have a look
http://www.dsgproblems.co.uk/
-
Steve, that's better. :happy2:
For the record, I have nothing against DSG, just like 'open and honest' advice.
I don't say there is a lot of failures, there are more failures than there should be, Plenty more than are displayed on this forum as the members on the forum tend to maintain their cars properly. Must be something in it when VW USA give a 10 year transmission manufacturers warranty on DSG cars.
Again, to the OP do your homework. Great box if you want a 'semi-auto, and if you do your homework and get a good one.

Thanks for the sound and balanced advice fellas, good food for thought... and further research. Will check out the links.

Welcome,
and sorry to hear of the Fate of you prior TR GTI. It sounded like one seriously nice GTI. I too have a TR GTI in manual. But no leather.
Something I can add, I "owned" (was loaned an DSG GTI mk5) for about 7 weeks, while they were replacing my Mechatronics unit for the 5 times in only 4 months on my TDI golf.
I ended up with a Manual GTI in the long run. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy driving my GTI. I do miss the DSG thou. To the point that I'm seriously considering selling it and going to a DSG GTI.
Based on you not wanting to modify your car (I'm sorry I can't see that lasting to long). Go for Edition 30. You can always add many option (accept sunroof etc.) to the car to make it as nice or better than your GTI was.
Maybe you should take a DSG GTI for a day or two from a yard. Drive it and see how you enjoy it? You might not like it at all which will make your decision far easier.
-
It seems that Mechatronics units are on back order circa 14 days wait.
-
Some of the parts come from Japan when i checked with TPS last, so this could possibly have something to do with it.
-
A large company like VW should have enough stock, and from enough differing suppliers to prevent natural occurrences such as the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami creating a large effect on parts/new car supplies.
The don't put all their eggs in one basket, except at the Vehicle/Gearbox manufacturing facility.
There have been rumblings of DSG shortages way before the earthquake.

Again get a good one after doing your homework, and look after it, and I think you stand a good chance of it staying serviceable.
-
Cheers fellas, just had a little play with a BMW auto in manual mode... I could get used to this... oh dear! Could very well be dsg after all. Also seen a few eddies for sale too. Oh my poor bank account... :signLOL:
-
Hi & welcome mate
DSG is the way forward :happy2:
Good luck with the search.
-
Which one are you referring to - that shows all their stock
-
If you could get them down to below £13k, id say thats a good buy
MFD2 with ipod already, dsg, winterpack - good things to have
-
Cheers mate, do you think dealers would generally would lob that much off? (never had the pleasure/misfortune to deal with dealers).
-
Id say you can easily shave a grand off that. Ive worked for a main dealer, and I know how much markup they make on cars like this!
Get the sales persons name and use it as much as you can....easy win :signLOL:
-
Brilliant, thanks for the advice Alex, food for thought!!! :happy2:
-
Good looking buy that one, may need 40k service, dsg service before purchasing that one though.
-
Well said Steve
-
Cheers Saint! :innocent: :signLOL:
-
Well guys... I've only gone and done it and joined the red army!
Woke up at 2.30 this morning and couldn't get back to sleep (just like Xmas lol) so decided to get the first train to Loughborough to see the ED30.
The car was better than advertised; it had more kit than even the salesman realised - what a touch :drinking:
Spec is Tornado Red, 3dr, 37k miles, DSG, Sat Nav, Full Winter Pack, Luxury Pack & Parrot Bluetooth Hands free (he didn't realise!), Ipod Integration, Highline,
Got a great deal with a thrown in service + DSG, new cam belt and Auto Glym Life Shine! Got him to change the white wormed centre caps and manky window switch too :happy2:
Obviously took it out for a test drive and WOWWWWWWWW! My god its fast... really fast. The car went like a bullet and I wasn't even nailing it!
You were all right, the DSG is light years ahead of the BMW Auto I'm pottering about in. The paddle shifts were fantastic... not as satisfying as a manual change but I may get used to that. One thing I will get used to though is the 'popping' over run from the exhaust when changing up... oh I do like that!
It is ever so slightly a tad harder suspension wise to my old GTI, but felt much more focussed tight.
Hopefully picking it up at the end of next week... hope I can sleep till then, I can't take 7 more Xmas nights till then :signLOL:
-
:congrats: :congrats:
well done!!
Now, your last nights sleep, was and will be the best for some time :signLOL:
-
Happy days :happy2: Welcome to Red ED30 ownership
btw love the new display pic steve!
-
Ha great choice bud. Sounds like a cracking deal !!
I empathise with you on the sleepless nights lol.
Oh and the best colour!
-
You're right there Andy! First sleep completed...just! Lol
Thanks guys for all your help, definitely helped me get a great car for a good price and package
-
:congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :drinking: :drinking:
Very nice, by the sounds of things you got an absolute bargain there.
As for the "popping noise" yes that is the best things about DSG GTI.
That's only one of my many reasons of wanting to change to DSG GTI.
can't wait for the pictures. And it's not even my car lol.
