Title: How best to remove scratches?
Post by: big al on April 15, 2011, 09:47:21 am
Hi guys, got a number of small scratches, zips, thrillers, that sort of thing. Have fit some dodo juice wax, but can anyone tell me a good cheap product just so that I can remove them from sight? And also the Rechnique used? None of the scratches are too deep, have a couple on the back of my recaro buckets that I would like to get rid of too.
Thanks

Where are these scratches?

And what are the back of the recaros covered in? Plastic?

One scratch is on the bonnet from when an oik jumped on it and broke my windscreen, then there are other ones about 1cm wide around the back panels.
The Recaro's are black shiny plastic, so have a couple of scratches on them.

I find metal polish to work quite nicely on plastic then a polish like Menzerna Final Finish on a finishing pad

Can you feel the scratches with your nail? If so then they can be polished out. improved but not removed as it's gone too far, probably through the clear coat and paint.

There is the product called Dr Colorchips which supposedly does a great job, never used it myself but might worth a go.

Dr Colorchip is a con for what it is. When you look further into it, the cost outweighs the benefit tenfold.

Theres alot of mixed reviews. They give you a tiny amount of paint, most of which gets wasted as you wipe it off due to the way its applied

I looked heavily into it and deemed it made more sense to just use normal touch up paint, as it only masks the chips and wont get rid of them completely in most cases

There is no substitute for machine polishing on vag paint work. Period. There are no wonder products or something that you will find in Halfords that will sort it. Anything you do get sucked into buying that claims to remove scratches will 9 times out 10, will leave you wishing you didn't bother in the first place

I do keep thinking that a good detailing session is in order, though like the satisfaction of doing it myself.
Out with the phone book it is then.

I agree, though to remove a scratch you can feel with your nail is not possible with machine polishing unless you go down the wet sanding route which most people will not consider.

So you either have it repaired or 'try' something like a home solution.

If you can feel a scratch with you finger nail it's a very deep one. Your going to have to remove a lot of lacquer around the area of the scratch to remove it. It's successful quite a lot but it is worth bearing in mind you will be reducing the longevity of the clear coat when your are wet sanding 20 microns plus.

Autoperfection were really good when they started up. Met Jim and Tara and they seemed like good people. Can't believe they would allow things to go downhill like this. Something must be amiss.

They have downsized big time, used to be in a unit, but working from their home now.

Lovely folks though, so not sure what's gone wrong.  It's a lot more competitive now though, lots of people selling detailing products.

Al, I live in Willenhall and have corrected over 50 cars, so I'd be happy to have a look for you and give you a hand.

Russ.

I know. I went round to their place about 2-3 years ago. Despite their home being full of boxes and stuff they were still doing well for a year or so.
