Hi, my 56 gti has a cd changer in the armrest, I was wondering if it's possible to remove this and replace it with a hard drive and play music from there? If anyone knows of a tutorial somewhere that would be great. My gti has the old non touch screen sat nav head unit that requires a disc for maps.
Thanks

have you thought of fitting an ipod dock in place of the cd changer fella and using an ipod to play your music from.

Or even better do what I did.......sold the Old sat nav head unit on fleabay, got close on £300 for it and the paid £500 for a RNS510 fitted. That sorts out your hard drive issue, and you get a far nicer head unit as well :happy2:

i think ill just try and get hold of of ipod dock for the armrest instead of the cd changer, does anyone know if this will be a straight swap for the cd changer, no other wiring looms needed? and does anyone have one for sale in the north west?
-
Yes its a straight swap - just remove CD changer, unplug loom, plug in loom to ipod and slot back in - simples!

cheers alex

Does this give the full control you get with the MDI cable?
As the basic ipod dock control is rubbish (Old man's got it in his TDI).

The ipod dock swap will be exactly the same as your old mans it emulates a cd changer and gives you access to 5 playlists and no track information. If you want full control then you need to go to MDI and 3rd gen stereo and you will need new wiring. There may be after market products that do the job but I have never looked into these.

MDI is a worthwhile upgrade if you have a HU that supports it.
