Title: Microphone from a VW prep kit
Post by: Scotsman on April 19, 2011, 06:22:26 am
I'll soon be installing a Parrot CK3000 with a quick connect harness - but would rather use the mic that's already installed with my VW phone prep kit (it's a 05 car).

The Parrot unit uses a mini 3.5mm jack connector - does anyone know whether the VW mic will fit, or does VW use a proprietory or difference connecter with the mic wiring? If it isn't a mini 3.5mm jack, could I do anything to convert it?

Many thanks
Richard.

The VW mic uses a proprietary connector, but theres nothing stopping you making an adapter up for it to work otherwise.

I was contemplating this in mine, but havent got round to it yet  :signLOL:

I have no ability on that front at all - what would be involved? don't suppose you make adapter's up on commision do you?

Could you just route the parrot mic up to the OEM location as an alternative ?

I believe the VW mic is in normal conditions active rather than passive not sure if this will have a bearing on using it with another kit?

Yes, but guess I'm not sure how much is invovled in routing it plus could the OEM one be of better quality? (not sure).

I think you might be right Rich, but principally the microphone will be the same as such

I dont know if it will make a difference just though I would pipe in   I guess they all work the same diaphragm moving magnet through a coil of wire.

Indeed  :notworthy:

Thing is, to get a VW microphone working, you need a 3.5mm 2 pole plug at one end, a VW 2 pin socket at the other, so a fully custom loom

If you use any kind of adaptor plug then it could affect mic quality.

I'm going to go to the effort of routing the parrot one up to the OEM location I think.

if the parrot one is the same as the fiscon unit then there is a thread around about modifying the foam bung in the OE slot to get the best results, alternatively Fiscon sell OE shaped mics with 3.5mm pins for 28 Euros or so if you dont fancy messing around.

I did that and had it in the internal light cluster but my callers couldn't hear me and said I was very muffled.  I had to move the mic outside the light cluster for them to be able to understand me.

I didn't fit it personally, but not that I know of.
