Title: Cam chain/tensioner
Post by: derek on April 19, 2011, 11:13:20 am
my car has developed an annoying rattle/diesel sound. have done some digging and think its the cam chain/tensioner.

Has anybody attempted to do this themselves?

how can you check if its shagged?

thanks

.........cam belt kit doesn't inc the  cam chain/tensioner etc,you will need to order these seperate & further cost. I know had it done on my last 05 AXX Engine code.

Where does this noise come from?  My engine has a bit of a ticking noise when you stand at the front of the car when it's running but just sounds bloody awesome from the back on tickover.

Had the cambelt replaced about 1k ago (60k service).... is it this and the tensioners or something else?

Thanks!

The ticking noise from the front is generally the fuel pump.

The small cam chain is on the right hand side of the engine(as you look in the engine bay) cam belt is on the left.''Yes'' they all tap a bit on tick over but when they really start to sound like an oil burner it usually means chain if fcuked.

finally got around to changing it all, have replaced the chain, tensioner + adjuster. not run up yet as i broke a pipe in the process so thats tomorrows job. while i was in the area i changed the fuel pump cam follower as it looked a bit worn. job wasnt that difficult just hope it cures my noisy engine!
