Title: IPOD doc won't play ipod....... Set up help required !
Post by: Fastmonkey on April 19, 2011, 01:55:13 pm
Got my new ipod doc in the post today, got some auto leads removeal tools, removed the USB dock and installed the ipod. Looks like the plastic ipod holder thing is for a nano so removed that and just wedged my ipod in for a trial. But I get nothing.......... No charge  no music........

Is there work to do on the MFD2 to set it up or is my ipod not compatible. According to Apples website it is an IPOD Classic 80gb from 2007 to 2009 ?

have you got the ipod in the right way round?  the holders are designed to ensure they go in the right way.

I'm also not sure if that gen ipod was firewire chargin compatible or not thats about the time they switched, the ipod dock itself doesnt support usb chargin like the new ones so make sure your ipod has charge.

Prett sure the ipod is in the right way round as per this pic ?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi183.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx35%2FFastmonkey%2Fipodposition.jpg&hash=3828e07873a51d0e87491c6975efc4b8a433a0f4)

Also ipod is fully charged and the AUX setting is set to Audio ?

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi183.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx35%2FFastmonkey%2Fauxsource.jpg&hash=86f3248b9a02b955dee147ffbab2c3f55ce2a394)

When I go back to the aux screen it shows all the play fast forward icons but nothing happens ?

yeah I would have to agree thats in the right way!  :signLOL:

Not used the changer with the MFD before only RNS510, does pressing CD twice give you different options?  And I assume the USB one worked before removal  :innocent:

Ipod is right way around

When you plug it in, does a VW logo show on the screen?

iPod doesnt use AUX in. It uses the CD changer input, so you need to press the CD button at the bottom of the unit

That iPod will work as thats what I used on my Ipod dock before upgrading to MDI

Thanks for all the help so far, I don't get a VW logo on the ipod at all ?

Then its not working

Did you plug the loom into the bottom of the dock securely?

Its possible you may need to change the cable to the CD changer variant.

Yep and took it all out to double check it and it's clipped in perfectly. Is it worth trying another ipod or something ? I thought they were all interchangeable ?

Any info on the cable, cost, fitting etc........... blimey it's never easy is it :-(

You could try another iPod, but it could be either a faulty dock or it wont work with that lead

Ok thanks I'll borrow another ipod to try first.

If it is the lead, any ideas what I would need to get and is it a major job to fit ?

I contacted the guy who sold it and he said it was working fine in his car before it came to me so not sure where I can go from there ?

I would say its a case of getting the new changer lead.

1T0 051 592A

Thats the code youll need for the dealer

Ok cool i'll try and order one of them up. Is there any fitting guides anywhere ?

I'm going to get the MFD2 out soon as I'm going to do an amp and component and sub install so probably worth doing everything at once.

They come with instructions, but its as easy as plugging it in and just adding the brown earth wire to the ground point under where the ashtray site

Good plan

That is very odd. It either is..

The lead isnt compatible

OR

The iPod dock doesnt work

OR

The iPod has issues

Yep it is odd !

So pretty sure the ipod works ok, i've been using it on an alpine HU in my other car, but I will borrow another one to make sure. Also I think one of my neighbours has a 6cd changer in their mk5 so thinking if I can persuade them to let me quickly test it that could troubleshoot all eventualities.

No luck with the neighbours but a kind person off here lives locally and has offered up there ipod dock equipped car to test so hopefully get to the bottom of this tomorrow.

Checked with the dealer and the cable is £34..........  :sad1:

Been thinking on this........... if the USB docker plays off the Aux and the Ipod and CD changer both play off the cd then it's got to be a different cable, correct me if I'm wrong but can't you have both a docker and an aux function ?

Testing Monday anyways......  :happy2:

Aye you can have both. They use different pins on the same plug

Ok I see, still substantiates my theory, but in that I have the wrong pins maybe......

Anyway all speculation, I just like trying to fix things !  :signLOL:

Update........

Got a kind fellow forum member to come and test his working ipod dock with me today and his worked in my car as soon as it plugged in, and even charges my ipod. My docker I was sold doesn't work in his car, so conclusive proof it is a dud......... I've contacted the seller...........

Swanky little VW logo there, love little things like that, my Twingo used to give the Renault sign.

I really need to stop being lazy and order that cable to connect my HU and Dock lol!

Looks good did the seller buy the replacement?

THanks Rich, but the replacement came with an adaptor in it that does the job, so all good.
