Title: Fitting LED Sidelights
Post by: nick_johnson on April 20, 2011, 12:57:21 am
Hi Guys,

I purchased a set of LED Sidelight for my GT Sport which arrived yesterday, when I got home this evening I attempted to fit them but with no joy at all. I removed the rubber cap on the offside which came off without a problem but trying to remove the bulb is impossible.

I am not sure if I should be pulling it or twisting it, either way it really does not want to move. What is worrying is that there isnt as much room on the passenger side which would make me think that this could be even harder.

Regards
Nick

Hi Guys,

Has any of you guys replaced the sidelight on a Golf 5, I tried to change the OEM for LED the other day and achieved nothing but some cut hands. Not sure if I should be pulling or twisting is there a knack I should know.

Mine was a small twist then pull out, very awkward to do, but it does come out eventually!

Not sure what it's like on Xenons but on halogen headlights it's a PITA. Everyone here who has upgraded them has come off with scraped knuckles at the very least. No twisting, just pull. Some have used pliers to help them but you need to make sure you grip the bulb holder and not the wires.

Did mine within a few minutes and suffered no injuries :P I must just have skinny hands lol. As said the first mistake is everyone pulls and thinks they wont go and they need to twist them which is the part people struggle with as there a bugger to twist.

The way I did it was grab them holder and wrap the cable around my little finger and just keep pulling, felt like I would snap something but they just then popped out - Don't be afraid they will come out eventually ;)

Grab the side light bulb holder as close to the rear of the main light lens & just pull/twist/rock & the holder will come out, they are a t**t tho . On the drivers side the black box(filter holder) can be removed(pulled up)to give more room. There is a small clip that need to be pushed in first to let you remove it. :happy2:

Managed to do the drivers side but I cannot get my hands behind the Airbox for the passenger , mine is a 1.4 TSI so I dont know if thats any different. Looks like the airbox may need to be removed so I can get at it?  :fighting:

I did my sidelights on my Mk5 R32 no problem.

Trying to do them on my GT TDI is impossible! Either my hands have grown in the last 6 months or there is less room in the engine bay of a TDI than there is on an R32! :surprised:

Can anyone confirm that these sidelight bulbs need to be twisted out or just simply pulled out on the standard GTi headlights?

Had a quick go and after 5mins I thought that I'd best ask before I do any damage  :ashamed:

Thanks.  :happy2:

Pull. They seem to be stuck in. Others have used pliers to gain leverage. I've got to change mine soon. They were from powerbulbs and lasted five years despite being on for more than 50% of the time (always have lights on these days).

Time to replace mine, I've bought a new set as one has an intermittent fault but I am really struggling to get out the drivers side, when I did the original set, VW even struggled doing it as well!

I struggled cos I tried with my fingers at first....and cos I wasn't sure whether or not to twist em out!!!

Pliers and a good straight yank back (no twisting) will get em out.  :happy2:

Yes first time it tried to change that one I ended up with lots of cuts and bruises due to the lack of space and it was on really tight.

Drivers side is really tight for space. I cut my knuckles in several places trying to do it. But eventualy they do come out with a hard pull and lots of blood and sweat later.

Try using the thin nosed pliers. I found it much easier

Had another go at the weekend and failed! :ashamed: Could not do the passenger side at all, cant get anything in there even long nose pliers its really doing my head in!

And then the drivers side is a doddle but the new LED fell out inside the light!

Any ideas how I can get it out without removing the whole unit?

How do you remove the light is it all the bumper off?

Rubber gloves (used for dish washing) are great here and allow you to get a better grip, they still dont stop the swearing though!

As a last resort take bumper off and remove the lights. Might need a kid or someone with small hands

How hard is it to take the bumper off? And how hard is it to put back on?

Lot of work just for changing the bulbs IMO. Although that is your only option now the bulb has fallen inside.

First time I changed the drivers side I did unbolt and move the black box thats sits directly behind the headlight which gave me enough room to get the bulb out :happy2:

The passanger side was easier as there is more room on that side.

Sorry to resurrect, but, does anyone know if these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-501-CREE-ERROR-FREE-CANBUS-LED-SMD-NUMBER-PLATE-XENON-WHITE-BULBS-T10-W5W-194-/380905335965?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item58afba2c9d#ht_5398wt_902 will fit the sidelight bulb holders? I take it I won't need a resistor? Any help will be appreciated   :happy2:

fitted these in mine
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=321414444554

the problem with Mk5 is that the bulb has to fit down a very tight tube, oh and they are a bugger to fit  :fighting:

Thanks for that mate! Did you need to use a resistor pack with these?

no they were plug & play, no different to fitting normal dim bulbs.

just wiggle them up and down instead of a straight pull. worked a treat on mine.

bumper off to replace sidelights bulbs

ah wiggle up & down, will try that next time.
last time I used small nose pliers, blind , just feel to find end of bulb holder to pull, and they did take some pulling...hopefully vw have made this easier on mk6 & 7?

no photos sorry, but they are bright & very white.

Ive never found any good LED sidelights. Ive used the mtec white sidelights and ive used some of the ones off ebay but i prefer the look of the oem sidelights or osram do sidelights which are a bit whiter than the oem ones and they can be seen in the daytime. The led sidelights cant be seen during the day at all.

When fitting them wear rubber gloves, as mentioned already it helps the grip plus you shouldnt touch the glass of the bulbs without gloves on. Might also save your fingers and hands from getting shredded trying to take out the bulb.

The other reviews on the forum suggest removing the headlight to this work but it really is not necessary. I used my phone to take a picture of the light so I knew what I was looking for. I then used a needle nosed pliers with a 45° angle to grip the light housing. From the picture shown the sidelights have 2 cables coming off and the housing is an orangey-brown. Grip the housing NOT THE CABLE firmly with the pliers and pull directly out. Grip the original bulb firmly with your fingers and just pull out from the holder. Make sure you give the new bulb a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth before you plug it back in.
Tip: To make sure you’re getting the right light, turn on the sidelights to get an idea of where it is located but be sure to turn them back off before removing,
The driver side is a little more tricky because there’s a few things in the way. You can still get at it with pliers but you’re doing it blind so use your phones internal camera to see what you’re gripping or alternatively remove the front grill, loosen the headlight and pull out at a slight angle to get a better view. You don’t need to take the bumper off because you’re only tilting the headlight to one side.
