.....I noticed I now have the dreaded 'Middle of the front wheelarch rust' just forming , on both sides. :sad1: If I ask at my next service/MOT , (which will be June) , how much luck do you think I will have getting this sorted under the VW Anti Corrosion warranty? The car is an 05 . totally standard with a FVWSH at the supplying dealer (Western VW , Edinburgh).

Seems to be a lottery ... I got mine done FOC but others haven't been so lucky... Full VWSH is a good start though.

Just waiting on a response to my claim with VW UK. My local stealers Robinsons were crap and clearly did not want to know but a call to VW UK soon changed their attitude. I don't have much hope on a result as they blame the wheel arch liner rubbbing on the bodywork. However my view is that this is then a design fault which they need to sort. It's now getting quite scary how many Mk5's now have this problem. Will let everybody know how I get on. It's only the nsf wing thats going, but feel I am now sitting on a time bomb with the other side and god knows what else on the car!

This sounds really dodgy!!!!
Do you guys live near the coast??? :scared:

I do , but the car spent the first 5 years of its life in the Edinburgh area. Also , its coming from the inside - ie the paint is bubbling from the back of the lip . there is no paint damage. I HATE having visible rust on a car , so if I cant get it sorted FOC under the warranty I will have to asess the situation then - I could end up trading the car away as I have no wish to be sorting rust every year or 2 on a car that isnt even 6 years old yet! The 10 year old Skoda Fabia I traded in for the Golf was still 100% rust free.

:surprised:
Rust on an 05 Golf? That is shocking tbh. Hope you get it sorted by VW.

Its getting quite common apparently , and so do I! :happy2:

Forgot to mention , only 41,000 miles on the clock as well.

I can beat that! 39600 miles and bubbling paint in the same area. Golf mk5s seem to be getting a reputation for rust.

good luck with western :happy2:

Mine has only done 46k, you should not have rust on a six year old car that is sold with the reputation of quality and reliability. Think VW are just trying to avoid the issue, doubt I will ever buy any of their products again.

That doesnt sound too hopeful , do they have a reputation for getting out of warranty claims?

Found rust on my 06 this weekend and I'm off to the local dealers tomorrow... It has done 53,000 but is full VW serviced the last one was in March this year - I thought they are supposed to do a check of the paint/body when servced?

It seems to be around the 5 year mark and onwards that the rust starts to form. Anyone with younger cars - I'd advise you all to keep an eye on your front wheelarches!.

Where abouts?
At the 'highest' point of the arch of the wheelarch , along the very bottom of the wheelarch lip , thats where mine has went , and if its in its early stages you will have to be really close to see it , and also at an angle , depending on what colour your car is! I can feel the bubbling if I run my fingertip along the area affected.

How easy is it to drop out the wheel arch plastic lining to clean out to try preventing this for occuring?

Sorry I have no idea , I leave that kind of thing to people a lot more qualified than me! Im sure someone on here has done it though.
