anyone sprayed their rear lights to a darker shade like the R32? im sure i read someone do it on here but iv searched for about half an hour here and still cant find the thread it was in. im not prepared to pay 150 for genuine ones as im not bothered about them being genuine would just like a darker finish, and if i mess them up then i will go down the route of buying them
-
yep i have, a member on here gave me the guidlines on how to do it, this is how i did it:
basicly get a can of ezee tint i think it was called and a can of spray laquaer and a roll of masking tape
then mask of the circles where the lights acutualy are, i cut out card board disks then made masking take shapes with the disks as a tempate - dont worry at getting a perfect edge you cant notice it.
then spray over the tint spray do a couple of coats, dont go realy dark staright away just build up the layers, and remember how many layers you do on each one so they will match.
let this dry then spray over 2-3 coats of laquaer letting it dry between each one
i then let them dry overnight before going back on the car
i then used super resin polish to bring them up to a good shine.
thats it realy, any problems or questions feel free to pm me, i think theres some photos of mine in my build thread
hope this helps

Here is the guide I posted a little while ago:
It is quite an easy mod to do but it takes time to mask up the lights.
I keyed ( lightly scratched using fine wire wool ) the entire lights before doing anything.
I used coachline first to mask the outer circles on the lights and then standard masking tape to the edge of the coachline:

I sprayed two layers of e-tech with the lights in a line so I could get an even coat accross them and used a heat gun to dry them off ( the bodyshop should have closed 5 hours before and I was still in there! :signLOL: )

I then removed the tape and sprayed the lot with 3 coats of clear lacquer and viola you have the finished item:

Hope this helps :happy2:

smoftah is the guy who gave me the guide on how to do it :), i just couldnt remember :) lol
-
They look better than my eddy lights! :stupid: :notworthy:
-
Look like they came out good!! Any close ups? What tint spray did you use?! :happy2:
-
Really happy with them, they look factory which is what I was after.
I ll get some close up pictures for you tomorrow mate :happy2:
-
Can't see the pictures as I'm on my phone but I will have a look when I'm home from work, iv ordered e-tech spray and some spray lacquer so I will be having a bash at it when it comes! Just a wee question for u, why did you lightly scratch the lights? Does it make the tint take to the light easier? Would it still work the same without doing this?
-
Its called 'keying'. It promotes adhesion of the tint spray. You do the same thing when you paint normally
-
they look fab, think im gona have a bash and do mine :)
-
ive got everything to do mine, had it for a while jst need to be in the right mood to spend a while masking the circles off lol
-
would/should you very very lightly score the lights before spraying? or simply de-grease and spray?
-
Good Job I like the Dark Side Must have try at doing this myself :happy2:
