I've just put a deposit down on an Edition 30 (Jan 2007) and want to buy an RNS510 version C. I assume my car will need a newer CAN to avoid any problems, which version should I get
-
this one is the newest one on ebay.de atm, but i have the AH revision (made in march 2010)

cheers, is L the lowest needed for the RNS, best check what I have first before ordering a new one!
-
K is the lowest needed not L, though not all Ks are suitable.
Its likely yours will already have a K
Youll need to scan your CAN Gateway with VCDS and post up the SW and HW revisions of it.
Mine had a K and it was absolutely fine.

I had a K in mine and it wasn't fine

What build month was yours danish?

12 month 2005
-
Ah early then
2007 cars are generally ok on a K :happy2:
-
I'm also wondering about this whole CAN Gateway thing. I have a 2007 Ed 30 (dunno what build or exact month as I am at work) and I want to be sure I won't get stupid issues following fitting BT and RNS510 etc.
Don't have any way of scanning though, sigh.
Where does the CAN Gateway live? Is it a DIY swap or need coding/hard to locate?
Cheers
Matt

Right, bought the RNS, i'll give it a go before changing the CAN
-
Can Gateway is hidden behind the relay/fuse box.
Accessible by removing the wiper motor and the access panel beneath it

My eyes are stuck to this thread, I have a Feb 2007 Edition 30 and want to upgrade to a RNS510 at some point and this thread should answer my question about the CAN gateway issues

Do you take the back wheels off when you top up the oil or is it just CAN gateways you like to take your time over
The Gateway is accessible from inside the car. :happy2:

Or just get to it above the pedals.....
Unless you have an early car and then they're sometimes behind the ashtray/cubby area.
EDIT-Stu beat me to it :signLOL:

Id have given you £50 quid if you could get to my can gateway. Some retard had cable tied it to the back of where the access plate is
There was absolutely no way in hell I could have got in there, be it from the top or via the pedals - believe me I tried.
I dont take the wheels off for oil top ups, but I take the exhaust off when I change the spark plugs though :signLOL:

On some cars it is near the bulkhead

I can get to it from the front even in that location, not easy granted but less hassle than going in through the scuttle.

What HW and SW versions on a K gateway have been proven to work?

I believe you have to have HW with a 21 signature for it to work - thats what mine had and it was a later K revision
Whats the build date of yours?
Best thing to do is try it and see
-
Jan 07, not gonna do any harm trying :scared:
-
You *might* be ok, but its possible you wont be as March 07 was when the later K units were installed
Worth a shot :happy2:
-
Are there any other signs apart from draining the battery, I think I read it switches itself off randomly too?
-
Symptoms....
It wont show the Welcome to Volkswagen boot screen after it has booted the first time
It'll drain the battery
It can randomly restart
It can also switch off
-
Gonna buy one to save the hassle, is AH the latest? How much are they from the dealer?

When I ordered that, I received a 7N0 variant which is out the new EOS and is bang up to date
Remember, you only need a gateway newer than a K so an L onwards will work a treat. Theres little advantage to having the latest revision in our cars
-
ta, ordered one of those, dealer said £158 for an AF, AH wasn't on his system
-
You will need 10.6.3 or higher VCDS to code this gateway btw just to make you aware :happy2: These are the newer gateways that user the Installation List instead of Long Coding to set the configured options
-
Yep, I've got the latest VCDS :happy2:
-
Then its happy days

OK, RNS is fitted and working :happy2:
Should it show the welcome screen everytime I turn it on? It doesn't at the moment
-
Only after 1 hour of the ignition being off, my revision K gateway appears to be working fine.

cheers, so if I go back in an hour or so and it shows the welcome screen it should be okay?
-
Well it showed the welcome screen :happy2: fingers crossed!

Does anyone know what setting I need to set in VCDS to get Nav on the MFD? I've added Navigation (37) to the CAN gateway, I thought that was all that was needed. There's no audio on the MFD either

Do you have a Full height MFD (Highline)?
If you do, then check the coding in the RNS and see if BAP is ticked. If it is untick it and reboot
-
Yeah highline, I can't find bap tickbox, is it under navigation coding?
-
Go into navigation > Coding > Long Coding
Restart the RNS after making changes
-
I think I must be blind! Does anyone have a screenshot of what I should be unticking?
-
Take a look

Its on the last byte in the Long Coding on 37 - Navigation
Notice at the bottom where it says BAP - you need to untick this

Done that but still nothing on the dash, is there anything else I need to do?
-
Did you have an audio menu before installing the RNS?
Also did you reboot the RNS after changing the coding?
-
Yep, had the audio menu on the original stereo. How do you reboot?
-
These three buttons on the top of the unit < + > + i
-
You need to reboot the RNS with the ignition on by pressing eject and the left & right arrow buttons simultaneously :happy2:
Then turn ignition off and on and it should work
-
Yep, reboot worked, cheers for all the help :happy2:
-
No worries
