Title: Dual mass flywheel Q/problem???
Post by: kierongti on April 27, 2011, 05:31:00 pm
Hi all, I had the car serviced today and asked them to check a noise that I could here from the engine... When you are in the car with doors closed, blowers off and all is quiet I can hear a tapping/knocking type sound when engine is running on idle.. It is a lower sounding tone than that of the injectors.. The vag garage say it isn't the 'bottom end'
Basically I am wondering what the DMF sounds like when it's on it's way out? Or any other suggestions from other people's previous experience.. Thanks all...

I am no expert but i would imagine that a dmf on its way out would sound like a smf when fitted, like a rattling unbalanced noise? Somebody in the know will come along and help you out soon. Stevie.

it is a sort of wobbly unbalanced sounding rattle if that makes sense... engine bay has been checked and all is bolted tight etc etc.. :stupid:

Is it like a deep chattering sound coming from gearbox area? Both my current ed30 and my r32 have had a similar noise so assume it's normal...

When my DMF went it sounded like a consistant metalic rattle / ticking which only occured when the car was warmed completely up, at first I thought it was just a heat sheild but no how wrong I was. hth

Dealer wouldn`t do anything for me regarding the DMF and I`d had the car less than a month.

Nor was the dealer / VW customer services interested in the ESP failure. I persisted with this and only paid a minimal fee, well minimal to having the DMF replaced myself

My flywheel is on its way out, I get no noise but sometimes a lot of seat wobble.

Next time you get back from driving so the engine has warmed up, stick the handbrake on and put the car in neutral with the clutch out. (blowers and radio off etc) just sit in your seat and if you can feel the car juddering slightly put your clutch in, if the juddering stops it probably the dmf.
Im no expert put this is what i got told to look out for when buying my mk5.

Putting the clutch in doesn't make a difference, if you put it in gear and put a little load on to it, then it stops.
