Title: RCD300 - Has to go, replace with what???
Post by: Megy_ED30 on April 30, 2011, 09:43:39 pm
Hello all, newbie to Golf ownership and therefore the forum and already looking to modify.

Have just bought an 07 plate GTi ED30, fitted with the standard RCD300 (dire head unit really) connected to an iPod connector in the armrest.  After just a day I have decided this head unit has to go but cant decide with what.  There are a few options, a Sony/Clarion/Alpine double DIN unit, all bluetooth enabled and can control an iPod through a read mounted USB input, or the much talked about RCD510.

2 main questions here really, 1 for the RCD option and 1 for the aftermarket option.

If I were to go for the RCD option, would the unit just be a straight swap for the RCD300 already fitted, I have read about CANs but dont have a clue what these are (if someone wants to let me know then I would be grateful), I assume the iPod connector from the armrest will be the same on the RCD510 and the RCD300, so just plug in, but how do I go about getting bluetooth sorted too?  I have seen another MDI unit mentioned, but this is also mentioned with iPod control, so whats the general do's and don'ts and views around this option.  I have seen some images where the stereo info is in the MFD in the dash, is this possible here or am I thinking about something else totally.

If I were to go for the aftermarket option, I know I would need a facia plug/trim, cable adapter and aerial connector, but would I also need to do anything with CANs or whatever?  Each of the units I have narrowed my option down to have a rear mounted USB socket for iPod connection, would there be a way to connect this to the (already fitted) wiring loom into the armrest iPod socket or would this be made redundant and I would need to route the USB lead to a suitable place in the car.

Would both options above be easy enough to swap over myself, I have replaced several stereos in the past but never one which is so integral into the console.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may be able to give me, would love to have this sorted out and replaced as soon as I can.

Ian

Many on here have gone for the RNS510 which is a satnav unit with built in 30GB hard drive. 20GB for music and 10GB for maps. This gives you a full on OEM look and you can control it via MFSW if you have one. It also plays DVDs (not whilst car is in motion) and accepts SD cards. If you go for the RNS you may/may not have to update your canbus to prevent battery drain.

or

You can go for the aftermarket unit, which may offer more features, be better on price etc, but is not OEM. I'm sure there'll be more replies along later that will be more detailed than mine.

HTH.

I'm currently stuck between these 2, the OEM RNS 510 or the Kenwood DNX520VBT (http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/vw/)

I have temp fitted my previous cars single din pioneer stereo, all works well for the time being except that it is permenantly on, as in it doesnt switch off with the ignition, did you have a similar problem and if so how did you get around it?

My alpine has the same problem at the moment - I need a canbus compatible lead thats on order through Halfrauds!
I have to turn it off and on manually!

I have been looking at the RCD510 but the MDI lead is another £100 on top and bluetooth another few hundred as well.

The above mentioned Kenwood unit looks good, also tempted by Clarion vx401e with is bluetooth and full ipod control out of the box for £350.

The unit I am more tempted with is the Sony XAV-70BT for £400, bluetooth and full iPod control and can (as I am sure you can on the others) attach a couple of extra screens for the brats in the back seats.  Probably all pretty much a muchness and not a lot to choose between them all.

The guy I spoke to down there didnt know about any that were compatible, you dont happen to know the product number/link to the part online do you?  Can you let me know how it goes once you get it.  Fitted the old Pioneer for now and it works well, wasnt actually as difficult to remove everything for access after all, less than 2 hours including 2 further trips to Halfords.

By the way, is the part you have on order similar/the same as this?  http://www.incartec.co.uk/assets/files/CAN%20Power%2012v.pdf (http://www.incartec.co.uk/assets/files/CAN%20Power%2012v.pdf)
