The time has come to get my wheels refurbed. Not sure whether to refurb them as original, dark grey or satin black. What do you think looks best?
-
Car colour???
I'm in two minds about getting mine gloss black on my DBP one...
-
Have you had a look in the mk5/6 wheel thread?
You can get them done OEM.
OEM but with black inserts.
smoked chrome (no risk of whiteworm)
matt black with chrome lip (like the european ed30s had)
gloss black
gloss black with red lip (like a few here have done)
white.
Depends on the colour of your car.
-
Cheers guys! I haven't seen the thread but will have a look. The car is black 3 dr.
-
I am in the same situation (Black GTI althoug 5 dr) so intrigued to see what other people have to say as well.
I was thinking of going to go witht the black inset but the risk of whiteworm has put me off so probably smoked chrome for me.
-
I'm swaying towards going for all satin black at the moment.
-
My personal all time fav wheel for the MK5 is the OEM's with Black Inserts

Saving up for some as we speak, wish I never bought my Omanyts lol

Nice one, I have emailed them.
Just a bit concerned when they are mobile. Anyone had their wheels refurbed by them?
Cheers!
-
Its that time of year where the sun is out and the wheels need to be at there best. I am considering satin black with chrome tips as I think OEM wheels look great but like 'Jordan' you know they will let you down in the end.
Wheelworks in Crawley quoted me about £250 i think.
Does anyone know of any other good places near Guilford?
-
£250, that is cheap compared to the quote Lepsons gave me of £320 + VAT.

Over here in N.Ireland they are asking £480 :surprised:
-
That makes me feel better about the quote I got. Can't wait to get them done just saving for them at the mo.
-
£250 that's mega cheap! I really wish I didn't buy my Omanyts the more I see these about on the road, doesn't help I parked next to this, this morning at work :( Someone up there is playing with me!

I love the diamond cut finish on the Monza II's. They are one of the main reasons I was originally drawn to the GTI.
Mine could do with a refurb but I would probably go for the diamond cut with black inserts
-
I just saw a mk6 gti with the monza shadows and they looked awesome, think I might have to go with them after all.
Will let you guys know when I decide.

Now i'm starting to think about going back to Diamond Finish arghhh!! :jumping:

If you read the whole post it tells you that some people have smoked chrome or silver coated alloys there is no mention of them diamond polishing the face. Basically there is no anti White worm treatment apart from getting them properly coated like any normal alloy.
-
Have decided to go black, just got to decide to go with satin or gloss!? :driver:
-

Basically, diamond cut finish is prone to whiteworming. Only a non-diamond cut finish will be free from this problem. Smoked chrome has a look that is not too dissimilar from diamond cut - have a look at RedRobin's car.
-
Just had mine done by SEM in Sunderland, £288 and they lent me a set of wheels and tyres whilst they were doing them.
They've done a cracking job

They do look good :happy2:
Is that the standard diamond cut finish?
-
I recently did a DIY refurb on my 18" monzas ..they were in terrible condition ..I mean really bad...I sanded them rite down and removed all scratches ,they now look great..ill post up pics soon

Just picked mine up and the wheels are going to get a refurb soon, I think i'm just opting for the whole wheel the same colour as the insert is now.
-
Yeah, think I have decided on all black now (satin black) :happy2:
-
Post a pic up when you get them done if you get a chance.
-
I had my monza II's refurbed to standard (diamond cut), they were in a right state when I bought the car and 450 quid later looked absolutely amazing.....however.....
Only 18 months later and the dreaded white worm was showing it's ugly face again. :surprised:
I wouldn't diamond cut again, full covering of paint next time!! Die white worm, die.
Still gotta love monza II's though...... :happy2:
-
Will post a photo when they are done! Yeah that's what I'm thinking about diamond cut.
-
Ok folks,
I mentioned earlier in this thread that I did a DIY job on my Detroits/Monza 2's. Very easy to do, but takes time and elbow grease. All you need is sandpaper, and a metal polish. I coated 1 wheel with lacquer just to see how it goes, but the other 3 are bare..which I think is better- if any white worm appears I can simply give it a rub with some metal polish and its gone... here is a before and after pic:

deffoe go with satin black, they look awesome. A mate of mine has them on his black ed30. I'm just in the process of fully refurbing some bbs Audi splits at the moment which I bought off of some one on here. Got my fingers well and truly burnt as they were scruffy when I collected them, full of White worm, oh well you live and learn. Going for a polished lip bare metal then maybe an anthracite middle. Will post some pics when they are finished.
-
FWIW Lepsons in Swindon are quoting 280 + vat for monza II's black inserts with diamond cut finish (today's price for four with tyres) versus £95 (each with tyres) all in for A1 wheels, torn between the two, A1's or Lepsons, any input anyone ???? Thinking for £50 beer tokens difference Lepsons have it, but Nigel at A1 sounded a great guy....
-
These were mine.....all done by A1 wheels. Great guys.....!! Great customer service.......(Just need a clean, they really do show up the finger prints!)
A1 :notworthy:

Dave, out of interest, who did this refurb?
-
Has anyone used Diamond Shine Vehicle Services in Cardiff for wheel refurb?
They do wheel refurb for £45 which i thought was good, most places charge about £75
Their site is now dead though : http://www.dsvs.co.uk/

I've just dug the receipt out.....
It was a company in Bridgend, South Wales as I was working there at the time. 'Renowheel Ltd'. I got the price wrong too, it was £373.75 which was 4 wheels anthracite and diamond cut, then laquered, plus one of the wheels needed a buckle removed.
I'll be honest the finish was/is absolutely amazing, genuinely second to none. Further to that the owner did tell me there was a strong chance the white worm would come back...but I decided to go for it anyway as they look gorgeous when in good condition. It isn't horrendous now but I know it's there, no doubt you know what I mean.
I've got phone numbers etc if anyone wants to check them out (if they're still there - I had them done in June 09).
:happy2:

What grade flatting paper did you use? Did you use a machine polisher to rebuff the wheel? Thanks
