Hi All,
Computer tells me I am getting 28mpg - in my 2005 DSG GTi. Is this normal!? I've tried to be good (honest!) and don't seem to be able to better it. That's some way off of combined official figures though.
Is that what I should expect?!
Ta. :-)

Depending on the journey type and condition of some bits then that is what you can expect I get about this around town with some 40-50mph drives. On motorway I see between 32 and 35mpg but this has improved with replacement of the diverter valve and recent change of plugs and run on 99 octane fuel.
Mine is '05 DSG as well.

Depends on how heavy your right foot is but also the traffic conditions and the roads you take.
To get from home to work, I can take various routes
- motorway, no traffic - 33mpg
- motorway, lots of traffic - 30mpg
- A-road, no traffic - 32mpg
- A-road, traffic, - 28mpg
This is all me being careful with fuel.
-
I wish i got that! I only get 22 with a bit of town driving and a bit of dual carriageway. Im not lead footed either.
-
On my 24 mile trip to work....it's a40, m25, a3 and cobham centre...
Average about 35-36 though have touched 40mpg...thought can easily average 26-28 if around town and enthusiastic driving :driver:
Manual though and remapped.. :happy2:

Stealthwolf i am with you one this one, your figures are spot on.......the Corrado VR6 auto was town 18 mpg, motorway 24 mpg and bear in mind that the latter is as a result of the stoooooopid 110kmh limit we have here in Spain. They are so ruthless here its frightening, you will get away with 114kmh but above that its trouble, a mate of mine got done doing 116kmh and was hit for €225 while my ex girlfriend hit 175kmh and was relieved of €450. Basically the govt here is broke (23% unemployment, economy built on construction and banking...........) and they want every centimo possible.........
-
I can hit 40+mpg but the car has to be empty, and I'm doing ~60mph for the entire journey (~150 miles). This also means no (or very occasiona) overtaking!
-
Good figures bearing in mind the power of the engine......i am going to Alicante on Saturday so will get some figures from the motorway then. The thing you notice (as Clarkson did on TG) is the thing pulls from 1600 rpm in 6th gear its quite remarkable and shows the advance in technology in the intervening years.....

TBH i got that cruising on the M25 at 60, bit of traffic though rarely went below 40 or above 70....
Still good though.....this morning with traffic, stop and start and a couple of miles at 80 got 36.4..

In my old 55 Reg GTI manual, I got a tank average of 22.6mpg = 220 miles'ish on mainly speed humped B roads
In my 56 Reg ED30 DSG, I got a tank average of 20.6mpg. I managed 18 MPG this morningto work taking it very easy!!! Oh dear...

I second that would be made up with 28!! :happy2: Getting 20-22!!

Reset it a try again.

What do you mean bud?

I've been keeping a close eye on mine lately Kian and I'm currently set for about 370+ miles from the current tank (260 miles done, trip says 130 odd left). That's brim to brim and the first time I've properly monitored it.
All of this is mixed driving. A very even mix of motorway driving, A/B road twisties' and town driving. I've spooled the turbo hard in parts with a few bursts, but it's all mostly steady driving.
On the commute home tonight I got 37.2 mpg for that journey alone. That's about 15 miles of country roads, with lots of small inclines (up hill, down hill etc...). I was impressed with that, but I'm talking about really chilled driving on the wind down home from work.
I'm a 2006 GTI 3door Manual on light alloys, smoothly running car (that I know of! :scared:) & tyre pressures set correctly etc...
There's lots of factors that contribute to poor/good mpg.
There's a good collection of mpg and fuel usage threads on here, have a dig around to get you thinking about it :happy2:

Average speed roadworks at 50mph seem to be the best speed for mine to get the most out of it... anything above 60 and it tends to drop a bit but can still get over 400miles to a tank, but I still got 320 to a tank at the weekend cruising around 70ish.. lol
With a mixture of various roads and mixture of driving styles I always seem to get over 320miles to a tank but I've had as low as 180miles and as high as 425 iirc.. I have a bad habit of making a mental note of what I get each time just to see how much I'm using
-
I've really got to get out of London! I can only dream of those figures.
-
If you havent reset the trip then that may be why your struggling to get higher MPG. If you have reset it then you need to lighten up on the right foot :P
-
I have started getting 36mpg out of my 2006 GTI DSG unmodded. Normally it is around the 32mpg mark but if i pull away slowly from standing still it vastly improves my average even on short runs into town. Does get a bit boring after a while but great if you are a stooge like me :indifferent:
-
The short answer is if you want decent mpg, don't buy a GTI!
-
The thing you notice (as Clarkson did on TG) is the thing pulls from 1600 rpm in 6th gear its quite remarkable and shows the advance in technology in the intervening years.....
....I thought it wasn't very good for an engine to be driven so heavily on its torque. If running 1,600 rpm I wouldn't pull away hard even in 4th! But that's probably why I very rarely see more than 30 mpg whatever the journey.
-

Couldnt agree more :notworthy:

I see 26-28 on the TT, and that is giving a seeing to! If I take it easy is will give 32-34, which is not often...... all due to the Noise! The Noise!
Best I had was bringing it south from Cheshire, in traffic, where it gave nigh on 38.
On V Power.

^^^^
That's really good, QD. It just shows how VAG are continually improving fuel efficiency.
Of course I'm not jealous of that 'noise' one little bit

I was just going to edit my post with that aspect RR, it really is a remarkable donkey.

....Donkey information is too much information!

28 mpg for me over the last 2,500 miles with a lot of motorway.
-
I don't even look at my computer!
-
25.2 over 2800ish miles for me
Mostly town driving and stuck in traffic though!
-
Is there a marked difference between the AXX engines and the BWA's? (is it BWA?) was there a later engine on the Mk5, it would be mildly interesting to see if the efficiencies improved.
I am AXX and regularly get about 25mpg (mostly town stop start commute, but can rise to circa 36mpg on a long motorway cruise).
-
^^^ I would be interested to know too. I've read on a number of occasions that the AXX engine was the last 'true FSI engine'. Curious to know exactly what they mean. Does that mean that the AXX is actually more efficient?
