Title: The age old question - Tyres
Post by: scotta on May 03, 2011, 01:21:03 pm
Front boots are needing replaced!

Currently im running michelin PS3's on the front and PS Exaltos (OEM) on the back.

However i can get Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetricals for £20 a tyre less.

I cant fault the PS3's for grip. Ive used Eagle F1 GSD3's previously and was impressed with them but have never used the asymetricals.

Thoughts?

those on here that have had the F1 asym rate them highly, so not a bad choice. even an old git uses them

I like my aysems...they seem to grip well, and if you can get them at a good price (like i did) then they make perfect sense over the alternatives.

What are the PS3's like for road noise and wear?

PS3's are superb tyres and one of the best for wear.

I got through Hankook V12's and Conti SC3's in my Megane in 8k each, but the PS3's were still good after 14k or so, with the same style of driving.

I think SC3's have a bit more grip in the dry, but PS3's are better value overall, if you have the extra cash up front.

Russ.

I have had trouble with my F1 asym.Just waiting for a reply from Goodyear.2 front tyres have split on the inner and outer wall. Not sure why. Good job I had taken the wheels off to clean them or I might not have been having this conversation :sad1: Tyres only done 7000 miles and it dosen't have a hard life!

Yes. I agree with the above the michellins are superior to the gyf1's. I may have been unlucky (several times) but about 4 of my gyf1's over two years, ended up like this  :scared:

First post here! I've just put my friends 18" RS6's onto my MKV Golf. Not a GTI unfortunately but I'm doing 20k+ motorway miles! Not sure on the two rears but the front tyres are Pirelli PZero's and they have unrealllllll grip. I can barely spin the wheels any more!

They've a decent amount of tread left. They're 245/40r18 though so they're way to fat for my needs. Gonna get 225/40r18s next time.

I have heard that the PZero wear pretty quickly so I don't think that I'll get them next time so I was considering Ps3s or CSC3's but I haven't a clue where to start as there is no consistant reviews on the internet! I see theyre around 130£ a corner online which is reasonable.

What would you recommend?

My previous cars (ED30 and Roc R) had factory fits of Conti's SC's and Dunlop SportMaxx respectively.

On the Ed30, I found that when I went to Michelin PS2's the car was more stable, quieter, and ESP less prone to trigger.  The Dunlop's on the Roc were good, wore well, and gave good grip.

My current car has PS2's and I will be replacing them when required with PS3's.  I have tried Goodyear F1's on my MK4 Golf, which was about 5 years ago, and I didn't rate them.  Very skittish, on anything other than super smooth tarmac.  I removed them and sold them on, and went back to Michelins.

Just my experiences, all down to personal taste, but I will always buy top quality tyres, and never skimp, only thing keeping you on the road.  Michelins all the way for me.

I have had Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric for 3 years and ~ 20k miles. I used them on the road and on the track (about 400 miles on the track).
+ good grip in the dry (PS3 have even better grip)
+ awesome grip in the wet (no. 1).
+ long lasting
- a bit noisy
- not fuel efficient
If you take the reinforced side wall you will loose points at comfort but gain some more stability.
I am really pleased with these tires and I will replace them with the same tires when it's time (now they have 5mm of thread remaining).

the Vredstein tyres have a good reputation on here,

Ill be trying them when i find them at a decent price, not going to pay 135 a corner from mytyres!!

Surely you'll be sensible and buy the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres.

Well, I haven't seen any tests but if they are better than the previous version I will definitely take them into consideration.

I run Pirelli P Zero's on my Pirelli edition golf (the car has been mapped) and the grip and wear is excellent. I cannot spin the wheels in 3rd or above in the dry. Never drive it hard in the lower gears but anyone can spin the front tyres in any fwd car in 1st and 2nd irrespective of the power. I will happily replace with the same tyres again

If you were to put Michelin's finest  on there, would it be deemed similar to a partial service history?  And blasphemy!

I'm on Pilot Sport 3's at the moment and loving them. Used to have the old V pattern Eagle F1's on my TT and they were fantastic to the point I was happy when it rained! Apart from a whiring noise on motorways - taking price into consideration they were the best Tyres I've had. Also had the Assemetric's but didn't rate them as highly in fact I was quite disappointed...

Usually there are lots of tests regarding tires. It all depends who you trust... Be sure that a lot of companies pay for these tests only to make sure their tires are number one (not saying that this the case in your link).
Personally, I trust ADAC (for 2010: http://www.adac.de/infotestrat/tests/reifen/sommerreifen/2010_Sommerreifen_Test_225_45_R17.aspx?ComponentId=29784&SourcePageId=31821) and Auto Motor und Sport reviews.

I try to follow ADACs advice. Just asked my tyreguy for a quote on those Pirelli Cinturato P7.

If you are looking at ADAC, check the marks for the bits that are important to you. Maybe traction is more important to you than wet handling. Maybe it's the vice-versa...
The idea is that we should look at the characteristics that are important to each of us!

A couple more to read. Each review seems to have a "slightly" different view point. The Pirelli P Zero seems to come out well in most tests.

The Russians didn't seem to like the Michelin Pilot Super Sport too much.  But Sport Auto max do!

I had two pairs of GY Asymmetric F1s great in the wet and very progressive in the dry. Much more confidence inspiring in the dry that the Vredestein  Ultrac Sessanta. But the GY were much worse in the snow!! the Vreds weren't too bad at all.

Will have to pop out and check the Vreds tyre pressures and see if they need a little more in.
