Title: Next car (yet another thread!)
Post by: ollie288 on May 03, 2011, 04:19:03 pm
As some of you may know I am selling my 1.6FSI golf for something with a bit more punch. I have been looking at the following cars so far as possible replacements:

GTI
Audi A3 2.0 T S-Line
Audi A3 2.0 TDI S-Line (170)
Mini cooper S

Is there any others to be looking at, my requirements are insurance; GTI is 2.5k where as the S line 2.0T (which is apparently faster) is 1.7K and the diesel is 1.3K. I will not be putting big millage on it as I have a company car. I plan on opting out of the tax on my company car and only use it for work. What would you be looking at in my shoes?

I am 19 that is the reason for the insurance.  :sad1:

Cheers :happy2:

Oh I also forgot to mention any views on the above cars are welcomed. Are the 2.0 T engines in the GTI and A3 the same? What would a remap do to the cars performance. Obviously I know about the GTI from this site but not to sure of the others :happy2:

I've been where you are now (I'm 23 and had 12 cars). If I was you I'd keep the Golf and wait until your 21 and get a GTi or Edition 30. I know it seems a long way and your mates probably have quicker / better cars than you at the moment, but it's worth the wait.

GTI all day long.

Fail that then the Cooper S. Fantastic little car. You will find yourself turning the radio off to listen to the supercharger.

Thanks for the replies!  :happy2:

I would like a GTI but I am not willing to pay 2.5k to ensure one. I am warming to the 2.0l t audi. I like the looks and interior plus they are faster than the GTI (according to figures on the net) Audi 147mph and 6.9 to 62. I think I will be going to test drive one and see what I think. If the insurance was the same (1.7k for A3) I would go for the GTI.

Yeah I like the cooper s but I cant get past the image it portrays to many people!  :scared:

Depends what you want from a car I suppose. I just love how relatively cheap you can get them for and how good out of the box they are.

Cant argue with a TDI though, still get some nice power and retain good MPG. Defo go for a few test drives though. Only good thing about my job is that I get to drive numerous amounts of cars and have the chance to give them a little spirited drive. Fell in love all over again today when I took the DSG GTI for a blast over the moors

I'd have taken the A3 170 TDI FWD every time Ollie, until I heard they're poor on fuel and rarely hit their own mpg stats. More like GTI MPG, give or take a little from what I hear from some owners which surprises me.

I quite like 330Ds but I don't need the size and I'm not sure the BMW 3 series image appeals. The stats are tempting though.
Looked at 120D's yourself? They come well kitted and map well, retaining good economy.

Thats interesting Pete! The stats say around 55mpg I think! Yeah my old man has a 3 series, they are nice cars but like you, I do not need the size. I really dislike the 1 series hatchbacks! I hate the shape of them.  :happy2:

Are the Audis going to be as easy to retro fit things to like golfs? I loved my xenons on my golf and would like them on my next car, but finding one with the right spec is proving quite difficult.  :happy2:

I'm about a year away from being in a very similar situation as you mate. That said as you can tell I've already been looking.

Stats wise I think the 330d walks it as said. Even the coupes look too big though in the e92s. Agreed on the 1series. The 1 coupes are tasty but still pricey.

It may not be gospel re. the 170 a3 efficiency but certainly worth asking a few owners. Combined its meant to hit 48mpg but apparently that's only met on a long run. I think a 140tdi with a milltek and map would be a cheaper bet, seeing anything up to 190bhp apparently.

It's a posh Golf as I've been told several times so mods should be as easy and approachable, yep dude :happy2:

New Ibiza Bocanegra/Cupra is a for some reason classed as group 4 by insurance companies and so can be insured for peanuts. Thats your best bet for cheap performance and IMO perfect car for a 19 year old. Cheap to run, cheap insurance, looks good, looks your age, fun to drive and once stage 2 probably as quick as a stage 1 ed30.

if you are going A3 go TDI as a 2.0t will depreciate like a stone, also the 2.0T is no GTI (i had one) the TDI was a more honest car imho

Forgot to say Ollie the xenons would have to be a retrofit too. I've only ever seen four A3 S-Line tdis with factory xenons for sale in a long time of looking. Usually high mileage too  :sad1:

I have an e92 330d .... it is not big at all .... but is long !  Inside it feels hardly any different to the size of my Edition 30 - but less hatchback 'upright' when driving ... if that makes sense !

6 secs to 60, 15 secs to 100 as standard and 50mpg on a run from an auto isn't bad !

They are expensive though - but very well made .... and apparently noticeably better than the 1 series.

FWIW don't forget a 320d - 7.5 to 60 now (OK, thats the 184bhp version ... but the 177bhp version I had was still under 8 secs)  and very quick after a remap .... though from my own experience I wouldn't recommend it on an auto.

I think I have my heart set on the A3 2 TFSI S-tronic s-line!   I went to my local Audi dealer but they couldn't find me anything that suited my needs, and didnt have one in to test drive.   :sad1: I like the looks and build (from a diesel model at the dealer).  I am going to have to wait patiently until one comes in with the right spec.  :popcornsoda:

They are around the £11-12K mark. Any ideas what I would get for a p/x on mk5 golf 1.6 fsi se 5 door with 50k on the clock. Good condition? (if anyone has one of those car guide book things)

And the final and most important question is performance, any technical person on here want to have an educated guess as to the performance of the 2 litre T FSI engine with a stage 2 remap and bolt ons?  :happy2:

as i said earlier they look great but was a massive let down of a car, poor ride and steering feel, i should know i did 55,000 miles in one, you really need to drive one, most reliable car i've owned but the one i've been most glad to see go

You'll get a great GTI for £11k - £12k, maybe even an Edition 30 with high(ish) miles.

S-Line on the A3 just stands for a hard ride, not a sporty ride.

What car did you go from Widget? I am coming from a 1.6 golf which isn't exactly a race car haha. Im surprised by your comment though, I have read loads of reviews online and they say it is a solid car. The only downside is the price.

I will defo test drive one thought.

I plan on coilovers anyway which may change the sloppy feel?

Yeah I know I could but the insurance is too much!  :fighting: I would probably get the GTI if they where the same for insurance.

I really like the interior of the Audi. (As you can tell from my last car I like a nicely finished interior, thats where the majority of mods happened!)

^^ I've two reliable sources that have had 8P S-Lines on AP and H&R coilovers respectively and both said they rode comfortably enough with tidy handling.

Like Andrew says the Sport is distinctively smoother than the S-Line in ride. I drove a 55' plate 140 tdi sport 3dr and it was silky smooth, enjoyably so.

Re. tuning for the 2.0T A3, same block as the k03 GTI I Though so same tuning results can be expected to my knowledge  :happy2:

i had a A3 2.0TDI Sport for a couple of years which I swapped for a A3 2.0TFSI S-line Sportback, the TDI was a better more honest car, stock suspension was shocking on s-line never felt all 4 wheels were on tarmac, looked superb but no drivers car, decent suspension set up will help but for me steering wheel was a bit to big and no steering feel, i never bothered mapping it for that reason

I'm clearly missing something here.

Surely an A3 TFSi with the level of fettling you mention is going to be much more difficult (read expensive) to insure than a GTi in standard form which you say you can't afford.

Avoid the 170TDi unless it's a CR.  The PD's are bad news.

The only advantage I can see for the A3 over the Golf (apart from the cheap insurance) is that it is readily available with 2+2WD. They're pretty well built, but have a poorer chassis set-up, flatter seats and usually less kit, due to Audi options being ridiculously overpriced. That's why xenons on an A3 are like gold plated unicorn crap, the option is/was 4 figures and hardly anyone coughed up. They're actually a badly needed add-on, as the A3 halogens are like bloody candles!

Ok I really do not understand how insurance companies generate prices! I had a look at how much this would cost to insure:

A 2009 BMW 3 Series 2000 cc 320i M Sport Coupe. I thought no way in hell would they insure me on this if a GTI is 2.6k. £1789 Fully comp with legal cover, hire car and windscreen cover! Its a shame the car is £19k!  :signLOL:

Where do they get there prices from? Is the letters GTI the thing that is causing me the problem?

^ I'm not sure about the engine in that Ollie?

Isn't the 320d M Sport faster/more economical/a better drive/more tunable?
Do a comparison if you haven't already. I can't imagine the insurance being much more on a derv coupe, although you may have to fork out a little more for the cost of the car.

I havent looked into the engines pete. I just came across this one on autotrader and decided to do a quote. Hadn't even thought about a BMW as i thought the insurance would be stupid. That car is £19k which is to much for me atm. I may have a look to see if there are any older/cheaper ones available though!  :happy2:

^ Sure fella. I realised after it may just have been for quote purposes but wanted to highlight the 320D>320i comparison  :happy2:

TBH you can get 330D's on a 55-07 plate for between £11k-£14k. I've been looking myself at these. Aside these, perhaps like me, the BMW scene isn't for you judging by your other choices? If you could manage the insurance, then I'd say worth a test drive.

I've been where you are now (I'm 23 and had 12 cars). If I was you I'd keep the Golf and wait until your 21 and get a GTi or Edition 30. I know it seems a long way and your mates probably have quicker / better cars than you at the moment, but it's worth the wait.

The thing with BMW's is the running costs, my old man has a 3 series and the tyres, servicing costs more than VW/Audi. I dont know I cant settle on what car to go for. I am getting a new bike next year when my licence becomes unrestricted (ninja ZX6r ) So I am keeping that money in the bank. I dont want to blow it all on a new car. Still no further on the decision!  Although there is a new contender I have been pondering. The Renault Clio 197 R27 or cup. Anyone got any opinions on this car? I am a little hesitant about the build quality but reviews on youtube say it is a proper drivers car. Plus they are a lot cheaper than the A3!

I had an R27 for 2 years before my Golf. Brilliant little car, great fun on a B road, but not as much fun on a motorway due to the low gearing. I used to love hustling much more powerful cars down the back roads. Build quality was pretty good. Only problem I had was a creaking door which was fixed under warranty.

Try and find a later one (post Oct 2007 build, I recall), as they have a revised 6th gear for lower motorway rpm. Only knocks off 2-300 revs, but it counts.

Wincing at your £1800 insurance comment, I paid around £260!

if your heart is set on a Golf Gti then wait untill you can get one or pay that little bit extra for the insurance. I had the same problem a year ago, i ended up buying an Audi A3 2.0TDI Sport, beautiful looking car, was nice to drive and ok for fuel economy. But it lasted for 6months because i wanted a Golf Gti, everytime i saw one drive past i was envious and it made me hate the Audi more and more each time i saw a Gti. I wish i just bought the Gti and spent that little bit extra on insurance.

Yup. Unless you go for a Liquid Yellow one, everything on the R27 was available as an option on the 197. One definite to look out for is the xenon lights, which are excellent. They're also plentiful, as unlike Golfs and A3s, 193 out of the 500 of R27s had that box ticked.

the clio F1 is a fun fast car! my mate had one for 2 years and it was a joy to drive, back roads will become ur new best friend. have u considered the older shape civic type R? amazin cars!! or as a few others have mentioned the mini cooper S...the noise of the mini will keep a smile on ur face
