So i've just bought my first Golf.
Its a 2004 GT TDi so doesn't have the fancy exhaust the newer ones have.
The rear valance is currently sprayed 'Tornado Red' which I don't really like.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg96.imageshack.us%2Fimg96%2F5272%2Fyx04rjv1back.jpg&hash=34ada6da60c2bfcb9cad0960b61ea9b384116d08)
I'm wondering how stupid it would look to swap it for a GTi valance and then upgrade the exhaust in a few months time when I can afford to do it properly.
I know the existing exhaust would not stick out at all but will it line up with the cut out?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Martin
I'm in the process of changing mine I've got a 170gt, I'm putting on a gti colour coded lower part.
If your interested I'll have a spare lower part that will be coming off it has the cut outs as well, I will also have mud flaps to go with it too!
Let me know
-
Why not get the valance (about £45 from the dealers) then save up enough money to do the lot at the same time?! When you have the exhaust, fit the valance and exhaust the same day?!
Saves you running round with a cut out for an exhaust but no exhaust for a couple of months

I know waiting is the sensible thing to do, and I may well do that. I just really don't like the painted valance I currently have.
sf1506 - Whereabouts are you? Is the 170 valance the textured like the GTi?
Thanks
Martin
-
you can buy a backbox off ebay for about £50, then the GTI valance for £45. very cheap mod really.
Then upgrade to a Milltek at a later date if you wanted.
-
^^ as Al mentions will be the best idea for now
-
I'm a bit reluctant to spend £400 on a Milltek system as i've just swapped my Impreza WRX to get the Golf to save money.
I'm thinking rather than a second hand exhaust trying something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-MK5-Stainless-Steel-Twin-Exhaust-Back-Box-/170523441342?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27b3fd38be (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-MK5-Stainless-Steel-Twin-Exhaust-Back-Box-/170523441342?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27b3fd38be)
Gives me a good look and hopefully won't break the bank.

Hi Martin
I'm in the midlands and its textured, I've changed them over today.
-
Am I correct in thinking that the 170 valance is not the same as the GTi one?
Thanks
Martin
-
Yes it's the same as the red one you have but it's got the cut outs.
-
Save your money and buy an old one, bit of autosol, wire wool and elbow grease will get a decent one looking as good as the one you posted for only about £30. Or if you bought the tips off eBay they are only about £50, so an all around saving. The one you posted will not give any power/or sound gains over what you have now.
-
Big Al,
Thanks for the advice. I'm not really after any power gains and not sure what sounds gains are available for a diesel.
Think I will keep my eye on eBay for a cheapo exhaust.

Looking for a GTi or GT TDi 170 Backbox Exhaust if anyone has one for sale.
I'm in the Manchester area and would prefer to collect for cash.
Also in Wrexham/Chester on weekends.
Thanks
Martin

The GTi backbox is not a direct fit on a 140, its needs a little playing around with to get it on, also I believe that not all 170 tips are chrome.
Here's my 140 with a GTi box

Still trying to source a backbox.
Here's mine so far without one.

I'm looking to do this but I can't find a GTi back box for anything close to £50, and don't suppose you know the part number for the valance?

here is mine , got my gti back box for £75 delivered off ebay. they only seem to come up every now and again. i would say this is the best place to keep an eye out as my gti owners would get a stainless one
-
I have got to do this, no if, no buts! It looks soooo much better than the nasty great lump of black plastic.........seems like I will be scanning the bay on a daily basis now.
This may sound like a stupid question, but what would you recommend to type in the search box? I tried Golf GTi silencer, exhaust, back box with no luck.

yep , ill keep an eye out for you as well.
i would search on anything and everything , back box exhaust , silencer , gti gt gt tdi. a lot of stuff on ebay is not listed correctly.
-
I appreciate that.
Big Al mentions you could get the lower valance from the stealers for around 45 quid, is this right and any idea of the part number?
vRS Carl had a look earlier on EKTA but the only rear valance he could find was the one with the removable plate for tow bar installation, the part number for that was around £65 inc VAT, then the plate was a further £11!
Finally, is the finish slightly textured?
-
this any good

I've got a feeling I was watching it first.... :P And I had texted Adam regarding posting and the possiblity of cutting it in to two pieces!
I know who got in there now.
Just another question: Would a mkIV exhaust fit a mkV? I have found one going cheap and from the picture it looks the same.....!

It was me! :P I picked it up on Thursday i think. Im not sure about a Mk 4 one fitting

Picture of mine fitted.
Got a brand new backbox for £60 off eBay. Bargain!
Cost me £50 to fit it, which included welding a smaller pipe to the back box so it could clamp to the existing system.

daboy wats the gti exhaust sound like on a gt tdi ? need one for mine
-
Sorry for late reply, been away.
Its sounds a little deeper and a tiny bit louder but only a touch, not a mod for improving the sound but does look a ton better.

Do you have the complete GTi system, or just the back box?
-
Just the back box, I don't know if a complete GTI system would fit.

Interesting that just the back box has change the exhaust note.
The cat back would definitely fit, it may just need a reducer to match up to the OE pipe.
-
Only a tiny bit, I can only tell because I changed it but I doubt the average Joe would notice.
