Hi, I am looking at going on this track day. Been on a few previous but not using my own vehicle. Is there anyone travelling down from north west area for this as I would follow down, due to it being quite a long boring drive. Also is there any recommendations?  I have had a quote for 200 for the day, is this reasonable for the insurance. Would you recommend gloves and do they all provide helmets if needed. Cheers for any responses guys.

Post by: tony_danza on May 12, 2011, 06:52:24 pm
I'm in Cheshire, so if I go, then you can come on down.

£200 seems very steep, you tried Moris.co.uk and competition-car-insurance.co.uk??

Get your annual policy through Greenlight next time, £50 a track day and you're fully comp  :happy2:

Post by: geordie56 on May 15, 2011, 04:32:25 pm
I'm gonna book up next week for this, just hope weathers ok. If weathers like this I may be better with my vredesteins on my vmr's in the wet as opposed to td's and t1r's. I have some competition pads daveb provided me should I put these in to bed in on my way down or not? He said they would be terrible when cold so is it a bit risky? One last thing is there somewhere I could change my wheels and store other wheels and jack at the track? Cheers.
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: tony_danza on May 15, 2011, 08:38:31 pm
1. Don't think about the weather until the day before.
2. What pads are they? If they're a different make/material to your current ones then they're going to be a nightmare unless you change the discs too. You need to plan ahead with this.
3. T1Rs are sh*t and they'll fall apart in a few hours. Get rid now and get something good.
4. Yes, there's always a safe place to store stuff.

Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: geordie56 on May 16, 2011, 05:40:09 pm
Hi Tony thanks for the advice, I was supplied my BBK by Daveb and he has said the pads supplied can be switched no worries when I go on track days. I have 365mm ap 2 piece discs and mintex pads for the road at the minute in, and have only done 1500 k on them. I have a set of mintex m1166 racing pads that will require a few hard stops to get up to braking efficiency, all I want to know is will I be best changing these on the track due to not having very good stopping with them until they reach temp? Dave has said to put them in just before a track day not on the road. The tyres I have not got yet, I have read a lot of good reviews on the t1r and hurdy says he rated them, would I be better with sticking to getting some r888's then?
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: tony_danza on May 16, 2011, 05:48:30 pm
Tough call on the brakes, it's a lot of messing about swapping before and after the track day. Bedding them in will be a pain too, as you'll have to do a hard first session not knowing the circuit and leave them for a good few hours to cure.

I'd trial them, see how they work from cold? Change them, go and bed them late at night and run around when it's quiet - get a feel for how much you've got. If they're shocking, stay on the road pads. You're hardly going to be giving it full beans in such a nice car.

What's your fluid like? How fresh, is it something like RBF600??

Tyres - you're not thinking of R1Rs are you?? They're great. T1Rs are deffo sh*t.
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: geordie56 on May 16, 2011, 07:00:14 pm
Sorry my mistake I meant r1r's so would I be better on these or r888 do you think? Bearing in mind they shall be for dry only really anyways as the vredesteins I have, have great reviews for an all rounder so if it's lashing down or damp I can just leave em on. as for the brakes it's only 20 mins to change them and I will have wheels off at the track anyway to change them so no harm in knocking a cple of pins out and changing pads. I may trial them this wend but dave did say you need heat in them as they will be shocking when cold.
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: tony_danza on May 16, 2011, 07:10:59 pm
Oh, absolutely get the R1R over the 888 - 1.5mm more tread, won't kill you on standing water and they wear better too. Who cares if your car is 1 second a lap faster on 888s really??

Get looking now though as the Japan situation has made supply scarce.

Brakes - cool, see how you get on.

Chungster has answered the last question with regards to the brakes an yes they are the rear setup from an r8. In my opinion so far they are an excellent setup combined with the s3 rear setup. Tony what tyres are you using at the moment then? Cheers for all the advice aswell.

geordie you may struggle getting tds in a rocco friendly offset of 35-41 as they are rare rocking horse all be it revo have knocking them out at a good price

i've been on the hunt for some R1Rs and they don't do them in the rocco standard size for 18s of 235/40/r18 you'll have to drop to 225/40/R18, you lose about 8mm on overall diameter
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: geordie56 on May 16, 2011, 09:50:21 pm
I have been looking at the r1r's and as you say I will have to drop to 225 but I don't honestly see this being a major issue do you? I've seen a few companies with the td's in stock just gonna ring tommorow and see if they have a 35 offset and in anthracite, fingers crossed. Has anyonenseen or heard much of the federal track tyre been getting good reviews as far as I can see, and they come in 235. Has anyone got any comparison of these compared to the r1r and the r888? The brakes aren't that gleaming now to be honest but hey ho! Has anyone swapped out there pads, oil or brake fluid prior to a track day?

The 135i is on spazflats at the moment - there'll not be much left of them when I'm done hopefully!!

Usually run Dunlop DZ03G or Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, I prefer the latter, but they're not easy to come by. The Federals are by all accounts an excellent buy and an official tyre in a few race series, Kumho V70A, Yoko A048s and Hankook RS2s are all very good too.

See what you can find, all the above will serve you very well indeed.

I have spoken with revo and a few others today regarding the Team dynamic 1.3  in 18x8.5 and I can get hold of the 1.3 TDs , but it's a wait of 3 weeks. They have said the same that I will have to drop to a 225 as they don't do a 235 in r1r tyres, can anyone see this being a problem. Also they said that it may stick out a bit far from the arch, as they have tried a few, however I have vmr on a 35 offset at the minute and they are fine don't stick out at all, so am I right in assuming that the TD should not stick out being of the same offset? Cheers guys. I could do with knowing as I will hopefully be ordering these tommorow.

How wide are the VMR?

I've got 245s on the back of mine and they're 8.5J - they look a little stretched, 225s would be scene stretched and possibly a even bit dangerous on the limit.

Pick up a set of scruffy standard Rocco wheels, rattle can them black and just enjoy it - as nice as a few kilos savings are, this sounds like too much hard work.

geordie i've replied to pm, in my view drive the car as is see how you get on and accept you are 5s a lap slower but having a ball and not shelled out £1,400, biggest limiting factor on my car is my lack of talent and stock dampers (which are now in the loft thank god)
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: tony_danza on May 17, 2011, 07:29:05 pm
Exactly, it's just about having fun.

Every spare set of wheels I've ever had have been 2nd hand, so I sell the for what I paid for them. Tyres I scour ebay and classifieds for, paying full whack is daft when all it requires is effort to find some new/part worns for half the price.

Then again, I ride kerbs and have been known to chuck it in the litter, so chipping or scratching shiny new ones would be even worse - best to save it for something you couldn't care less about.

Just don't wanna damage my nice vmr's and wanna have decent tyres still, what if I went with TD 1.2 and federal rsr's could get these for around 900. Or I have been toying With the idea of a Quaife LSD from vw racing for quite some months would I just be better getting this for now and see how I go on with my wheels and tyres as is? Cheers for all the help btw.

Wigit thanks a lot for that pm, I  need to explain myself just a little bit more here aswell. This is also my track day toy I have a range rover sport and the wife has a audi a3 black edition, this is now my toy to start tweaking more than I already have. Here's a list so far just so you get the picture, h&r front and rear arbs with neuspeed drop links (which has sorted a lot of the twitchiness at highnspeeds out, vwr lower engine mount may add the other 2, tt lower arms may get hubs aswell if dave b can sort a new bracket for my BBK to fit as the hub is a lot bigger in size but half the weight, r8 4pots which ar e great combined with the minted fast road pads and 2 piece ap discs, s3 rears with 310mm drilled and vented discs, poly bushes fitted to full front end, white line anti lift kit, with poly bushes, braided hoses, autograph carbon fibre induction kit, updated dump valve, 3" milltec down pipe and sports cat with Jetex rear stainless, and Giac remap to 290 bhp. I also have previous track day experience just not in my personal car and have done a lot of rally cross with a friend in the past, so have quite a bit of experience just need to get use to new tracks etc.... Hope this puts me in a better position for you to advise on what next etc.... Cheers.

1.2s and Federals sounds like a plan, ruin them as you get used to it on track and further evolve the car. Once you're happy, get some really sticky stuff!

I managed without a diff, but only because it didn't fit my ethos of never doing anything you can't remove and sell. I just got sticky tyres and set the car up to suit... but if you've got money to chuck at it, do it.
Title: Re: Bedford GT Circuit - 31st May Open Pit Lane
Post by: geordie56 on May 18, 2011, 08:19:41 pm
Well ive took your advice and gonna see how the car fairs on the existing wheels and tyres for the minute, however i have spoken with matt and my car is booked in for a Quaiffe LSD next week. Matt says it will be ready in time for the weekend giving me just enough time to get sorted for tuesdays trackday. So i am now looking forward to this and matt says it makes a hell of a difference. I'll see how the tyres fair as i say and if they are really bad i may upgrade to the new ones.

It'll probably be a bit kinder on the tyres too with the diff, instead of spinning the inside all the time.

shouldn't be far off your toy's claimed output...but think your chassis set up will be superior to mine.

Will see how it goes before next round of mods. Superpro bush mod will be done in June.

But I'm more concerned if the clutch will last. Think I'll change that after Combe in July and get it bedded in for Combe part 2 at Audi International in Oct.  :happy2:

Well I won't be racing on the first outing with a new diff aswell! I will from previous experience state one thing however, an electronic diff will never physically be as good as a good old mechanical diff. It's probably not an opinion, more of a fact don't get me wrong they are ok but not brilliant.

Only 32 cars at the event so plenty of track space for everyone.

It was a really good day for me with both me and the car performing better than expected. The 30min tuition made a big difference  :driver:

Good to see you lads yesterday, had a great day, a few laps with some tuition gave me confidence to just lift off rather than brake into some corners, and the straight at 140mph into a chicane jumping the curbs at 100mph  :jumping:

A bit of footage behind The Red Baron and a lap of Bedford.

Mike what settings do you use on your GoPro, mine seems to bright on the outside when filming from inside. It was on Resolution: R2, Exposure: Center Weighted.

On the news today another large glacier has disappeared due to geordie56's right foot  :signLOL:

Great video Neil  :happy2: With regards to the GoPro, try having a little less of the roof lining in shot - you may also want to try spot metering. Camera is currently metering for inside the cabin, hence the over exposure of the track.

Great footage Neil it's come out good! On a side note what we said about checking wheel nuts we all had better make a more concise effort. At the end of the day when I said I thought my driveshafts were sounding a bit clunky, it wasn't them! I phoned matt at vwr who sent me over to kpm first thing in the morning and when they went to take the wheels off he said and I witnessed, 2 were loose one was hanging out and the other two were bloody missing on one side! The other side I was lucky to have all five in. As a result of this Kevin has fitted studs and nuts the same as Neils, could have ended up like that Clio! I had him change my brake fluid while I was there aswell to an ap race fluid. Apart from that what a day!

Did you not check them before coming down south??

Yeh they were bloody checked and torque up, kevin said it happens to there Full all out race cars so they check them after every session which I I'll be doing aswell! It's just down to the sheer pressures etc in cornering etc.. He said it happens.

u were giving it the beans tho all day  :signLOL:

i think it's quite hard to use 2 full tanks in a day of tracking considering you were in having having breaks and chit chat. but yeah carry torque wrench next time.  :happy2:

Need to speak to the photographer about shutter speed!  :popcornsoda:

think you find that with most official track day toggers now...higher speed to make sure u get a clean shot and use the speed of the car to create the motion. he had to go back in every now and again to download the pics for us to see. he wasn't out on the track all day.

I bought a set from a different outlet last time at Bedford with the GTI....so will see how these look when i get my hands on it. But it looks better per the thumbs and what i saw on the computer at the track.

surprisingly it was the front left that came off as he came in the pits just past the marshall post. wheel rolled onto the grass otherside of barrier and he stopped short of the barrier scraping his AP set up.

I had to rip the powdercoat out of the stud sleeves and off the back of the wheel with sandpaper on a drill. Never came loose after that!!
