Went through one of these :scared:, then 1/2 a mile ahead another 2 were next to each other (within 10 feet apart which was odd!) .
The third & final one had 'ON TEST' on it though. No white markings on the road, no flash etc. They were all forward facing.
A27 dual carriageway Southbound southwater way
anyone with any knowledge on them??????
-
They look like traffic/ANPR cameras.
-
They had the Gatso sticker on the back, i thought they just did speed, there wasn't any warnings up or anything and it was on a bend over the 1/2 mile distance.
seen a few rear facing ones after the big box original gatso's tho.
-
Never seen those ones before, doesnt look like a speed camera and if they were they would have to paint them yellow.
-
I would say they were Anpr cameras. Here is all the speed camera locations on the A27

Here are the different types of camera here;

I think forward facing speed camera's are a bit iffy, legally, as they would be discriminating against you by prosecuting you based on evidence from a forward facing camera.
If you were a motorcyclist with a helmet / visor and no front number plate they couldn't prosecute you with a forward facing so its unfair to discriminate against a car driver.
Someone has successfully avoided prosecution on the above argument....

Some good info so far, :happy2: cheers peeps.
my mistake, A24 Sussex, not A27.
-
Is no One else just thinking it's just an external flash?
-
Don't know how true it is but I recall someone telling me the 'Yellow Boxes' are cartridge type film camera's and the grey's are digital, i.e. sends the pic's to HQ down a wire avoiding the vandalism etc.... sounds plausible.

so when there is a burning tyre on top it will be ok, for the next speeding motorist

All fixed cameras have to have road markings warning of them coming up or they are illegal. :happy2:
-
I went through these about 2 months ago ... exactly like posted - one on test and the other ??
A bit of google assistance and PH seems to indicate they are trial Specs cameras not yet active.
I was off to drive a Z4 35i so was luckily driving my prospective trade in carefully ... and would not have warranted any attention ... so can't say I know for certain they are not live - that said, if it says on trial they mean it.

Are you sure that is not just guidelines ?
-
I travel all over the country and see hundreds, and have never seen any without warnings, so i was trying to confirm to the op that they are highly likely not to be speed cameras. Dont know for sure. :happy2:
-
They are either traffic flow camera's or ANPR.. Only gray ones i see are forward flashing for gatso's and the type above but with red lights in them (like what you have on cctv sometimes), red light and bus lane camera's..
Plus if they are under test I don't think anything can be done (don't quote me on that,lol)..
I remember reading that yellow are local government and gray are govourment at one point but 99% of all new cameras are yellow...

You mean they're trying to see how much £££ they can collect and whether it's worth running them?

Yep, that's about right ;)

Nah, trust me ... they are likely to be speed cameras ... but as not 'painted' or signed properly are unlikely to be active. Unpainted ones are usually decommissioned ... or new
-
I do alot of driving around the uk and have seen these for a while here and there, wondered what they are, after just doing a google search it turns out they are flash poles, like said earlier in the thread, they are for areas where speeders are common at night time, used to give a better picture.
Ive only read this and by no means know if its true :happy2:
-
I'm 90% sure it's just an external flash for the newer digital cameras now being used in the gatsos! :signLOL:
-
I drove through those the other day mate, wasnt exactly taking it steady either but hence no road markings and think I saw a 'Cameras on Test' sign at the first one. That bit of road has always been a fast one and Horsham council probably have seen a nice little earner.
-
There are a couple of these near me with the ‘cameras on test’ sign. No gatso near it so it’s not a flash for a gatso.
Plus that stretch of road is not a quick place (it’s a curved bit of road just past a junction/traffic lights).
Will be interesting to find out what they are.
