What would be on your shopping list at the £40k bracket ? Not more than 2 years old
Interested in what GTi owners move on to
-
Audi RS3 or RR Sport. To be honest i would probably buy a newer S3 and pay some of the mortgage off!
-
TTRS.
-
E92 M3!
Porsche Cayman S

Some do, I could quite happily go out and blow £60k cash on a car if I wanted to, but choose not to. For 40k though, hmmmm something based on the 2.5 TFSI I think. Depends if you are looking brand new or used, 40k used opens up a whole new ball game.
-
Don't doubt some would...look at Mr Hurry.
But think that's for like <5% of the GTI owners who could or would do that.
The GTI is a VFM all rounder affordable by a lot of people.
I would think VWs marketing dept would say GTI owners don't really look at £40k cars. There will always be the odd exception of course
-
Can't believe no one has suggested this yet
Nissan GTR

Yes, would agree with you on that one Lee. What would your choice be then

Nissan GTR
40k used car that requires a 80k wallet. Theres a reason why GTR owners jump ship once the warranties up imo.
40K
would be a TTRS or porka for me. Possibly a lotus

My GTI was £22k. R was £30k. In theory I should move to £40k car next :signLOL:
But do I need a £40k car to do the 11 miles to work?
To own a £40k and associated running costs I'd prolly need to earn double what I'm on.
I'd have to see what cars are available in that price bracket. Think it wud be RWD tho. :happy2:
-
.
Audi RS3 in red and transfer my VW number plate
Only because it's 5-door and DSG (S-tronic).
-
The 7 speed S Tronic / DSG doesn't look very reliable tho.
Even tho I have a friend at Audi UK, the dealer network and customer service will put me off.
For me it'll be the 1M or used M3 V8 or Porka.

Surely a £25k Facelifted S3 Revo'd to Stage 2+ would out perform, be cheaper to run and you'd have some cash left over :jumping:

....The RS3 has that superb 5-cylinder turbo'd engine as in the TT-RS and slightly better styling than a facelift S3 imo. It's not always about which car is the fastest.
-
RS3 better styling.............
Slightly OT.
TTRS (with (Led to believe) modest mods - remap Circa 400 horses, and KW Coilies, and decent track tyres) BTG 7:39.
The biggest mod is the driver, he obviously knows how to drive fast and smooth.
-
I will probably move on to the 1M in 12-18m time and pick one up with the right options when they are low-mid £30's.
I bought an E92M3 new and will never do that again (Great car, in fact awesome every day car). Just trying to resist spending too much on the Pirelli in the meantime......
Then again maybe a second car ......
-
RS3 better styling.............
Slightly OT.
....I meant better styling than a face-lift S3 as posted by George, not better stying than a TT-RS (totally different car type of course). :happy2:
-
I hate the A3 Sportback shell, so the RS3 is still a big no from me.

Having pasted a V8 M3 around Anglesey on Monday, and loved it, one of them or a 997 C2S.

Superb driver, smooth, balanced and unflustered. He or She makes supb 8.00 look easy.....

For 40k I would get an absolutely mint splitty and travel europe for a year!
Zero depreciation if maintained :drinking:

That is one fast car right their. :happy2:
To be fair the TTRS is amazingly balanced round a track, and that is what makes it look so smooth. I have been out on track with Tom in his S3 and his TTRS the latter felt like it was built for track in comparison, every corner and bend on Oulton circuit was taken in its stride, it felt like it was nowhere near the limit. I often wonder why some cars cost staggering amounts more than others. The TTRS is £20,000 ish more than a ED 30 new, and after going round a track as a pax in one i thought ah! that's why. :happy2:
-
TT RS .... and no I am not gay
-
No question, an E90 M3 Saloon.
I bet it's better round a track than a TTTS too
-
^^ From an entertainment perspective of course :happy2:

Upset a rather new M3 yesterday. I was the one smiling as we parted.............
All on a private road, and only up to 70 you understand.

Used TTRS (£35k ish) and nice, well looked after Ducati 748 SPS with 50mm Terry Wogan (Termignoni's) race pipes! (£5K ish)
-
Hmm....
S4 S-Tronic (inc. sports diff) with a remap intake and a Milltek - 450bhp and the same in lbft.
-
I have driven the C63 for quite a few miles (My best mate had one) and they are very good. Not as sharp as an M3, or as well balanced but still exceptionally good and extremely capable. The mid grunt is eye watering and it's quicker on the straight than the M3. I really like the C63 but don't love it. Long term real life mpg for my M3 was 20.5 and my mates C63 18.5-19.0 mpg, it was always 2mpg worse when we drove the same journey !
I wish 997 GT3's were in the £40's

B8 S4 Avant for me. 430 ponies with a 1500 quid MTM tune up. Whack a StaSis zorst on it and you have one rapid pooch transporter!

would not buy an audi they drop too much ££££ for me.Would be a 993 turbo or an old porsche of some kind as they dont lose money like new stuff

Totally and with space in the back for all my crap
-
Porker 911 C2 (GT3 possible now)
Bullett proof depreciation too
Failing that I would consider a nice E46 M3 and put some proper brakes and KW Clubsports on it and some nice BMW CSL alloys.....much cheaper option I know but I also like the E92 M3.....certainly versatile and quick in Evo's review around their circuit tests.
I'm sorely tempted by a GTR too....after trying to keep with it round Combe.
Would hate the fuel bills with any of the above although the E46 M3 can be coaxed to reasonable consumption.
I wonder how long R8's will take to get to £40k??
-

Not long if you could bear to risk a cat D registered one. Most others are at least £50K.

The above would be at least £66k if it wasn't registered!!!!!

A little docile compared to everything said so far but same engine as Stu's new car, but in this;

would not buy an audi they drop too much ££££ for me.
It depends if you buy at the right price to begin with. When the S3 goes later this month I'll only be down £900 from the invoice price last September. Not many cars will offer that sort of return

For 40k I would do 20k on my mortgage and buy my Octavia again.
-
That's what I'd really do with £40K, pay off my mortgage!
That's a small mortgage to pay off !!.... if only.
Most people in deepest Somerset don't even earn this in two years
£40k is way above the average according to Govt stats.
I was amazed to find as per usual after visiting Staines/Heathrow area there seems to be very little sign of recession there....I used to work there some 10yrs ago....nothing changes in the South East. Plenty of public sector jobs losses are filtering thru in my area and in Bristol now and into next year from my own knowledge though but I suppose these people wouldn't get nice Audi S line models as their company cars..

Sounds like you made a similar move to me. I lived in Berks, Bucks, Surrey etc and moved to Wiltshire a few years back. Love it down this way now and would never go back to the South East. I've worked at Heathrow, West London, Slough etc, too. Houses are super cheap in the town I live in. We sold a 2 bed semi in Buckinghamshire and bought a 4 bed detached with double garage in Wilts without increasing our mortgage!

Good move.....same for me.
Got a nice property which would cost over £350 in Staines/Egham area. I used to live in Woking and travelled into London but can't imagine buying a 4 bed even back then they wanted £300k++.
I hate mortgages and hope to pay mine off at 50....will concentrate on a newer cvar maybe in a few years time. There is such a gap in earnings in different parts of the country. I suppose Wentworth, Staines, Weybridge Surrey and the London areas are the most wealthy in GB.
-
MrsP and I couldn't believe our luck when we were house hunting. We bought new and when we went into the sales office and asked what they had for around £300K they said they didn't have anything that expensive! We looked at the biggest house they had and decided it was too big, so we bought a slightly smaller one and ticked all the option boxes instead.

I am looking for a job in the South West to move back to Bath, looking for jobs with as much as £35k less than my current role...... bugger all out there...
It's very interesting the feedback so far. I moved from potentially spending £40k to replace a stolen M3 and spent £16k on a Pirelli. I looked at late M5's, another M3 and Porka's. Then I drove a totally unaffordable 997 genII GT3........ want, lust, desire..... so my original plan was the golf and save. But now I'm thinking perhaps 18m in the Golf then a secondhand 1M and spend more hard earned on reducing the Mortgage so life is less of a struggle
I'm drinking a glass of £5.99 wine as I type which wouldn't have been the case 18m ago :ashamed:

£35k than you currently earn!! Where do you work?
Jobs earning big salaries are mostly internally advertised in most cases.
We were only talking at work the other day that to make real strides in take home after tax have to be on at least £70-100k.
Not many jobs floating around like that these days unless your in banking/solicitor GP etc.....
The average salary in my town in between £13-£18k!!
-
I'd get married again... best money I ever spent.
On a serious note, I've been beaten to it. Probably a remapped A5 3.0 TDi or a Golf R with change to put towards the mortgage tuning it. That said, I've gotten very bored of simply not being able to safely/legally enjoy my R on the road lately, so perhaps it would be GTD for work and something fun for the weekends/track.

I am probably a bit older than most on here. My first job after Uni started at £10k, but that was a while ago...... I am not sure what I could survive on tbh, but I can tell you with no debt other than my current mortgage interest it's not £18k !
I'd have no money for an ice cream let alone Shell V-max
-
I'm not sure I could bring myself to spend £40K on a car, even though I'm sure I could finance it. The way the motorist is taxed, persecuted for going slightly too fast and the price of fuel wouldn't let me enjoy it as much as I think I should be able to, having spent that sort of dosh. Fifteen grand or so is a point I've never stepped over and I probably won't ever do it, as far as I can see.

I'm still drooling a little over the BMW 1M
I bet in Orange, black alloys and a chip it would be fabulous
-
It has to be the new audi rs6 v10 Twin turbo
What an absolute monster of a car (750) when mapped and nothing but luxury inside
Ive been in one and its just crazy how fast this thing goes
What a car!
-
Put it towards a Viking T1 Glider so I can take my kids up when they're old enough. Love gliding and every time I go up it's as good at the first time

....I'd much rather have the Lambo just because of the sound. Those big Audi's are gross unless you have a big family to cart around - Excellent car though.
Anyway, surely £40k won't buy you either.
-
^^ hmm you might JUST squeeze a 2008 model. I love how inconspicuous it is though ,nobody will know what hit them.
You can ride with the family in luxury or turn it into a monster whenever you feel like it

A mobile salon with a 2.5 TFSI :P

Or just buy 40,000 lottery tickets :jumping:

The camper vans are part of the rental fleet. Porsche is my weekend toy, and I love it........spend most of the time in the week in my VW Transporter toffee brown kombi 180 biturbo :)
Will probably be able to get a discount on the 35, I did on the 30!
-
Oli, how long are you keeping the transport fleet/California's before overloading them?
-
All of our transporters including the California's will be sold at 12 months.
-
Let us know when the 12 months comes close in that case :happy2:
-
Will do, but it's March 2012. We're running 4 campers next year!

I did see a !M coupe in white, sold at my local BMW dealer, the sales guy phoned me up so I could have a look round (Bur not drive as already sold :ashamed:)
Very nice....... I don't think I'd have white as my last M3 was the same colour, I have to say I really liked it :happy2:

Note: do not read the latest Evo. Your want will increase!

I'm keeping my Pirelli for at least 6-12m I have had it only 3m. It's now revo stage 2 with a forge twintercooler on order (I won't go 2+). VWR six pot front brakes also on order and chassis now sorted;
TD 8x18's, Bilstein PSS10, walk, TT lower alloy arms, Neuspeed ARB's, THS engine mount.
I'm now happy with how it behaves, I think a 12m old low miles 1M could be too tempting in 2012.....

Having both the 135i and the 335d as our company cars, I would say that the one thing the 135i lacks is the chassis of the 3 series. It just feels so much more stable and planted in corners and at speed, but the 135i feels more nimble and about 1/2 of the weight.
the 1M uses the 135i engine (n54) but with a shortened M3 cup chassis, which by the sounds of it is an amazing combination. I need to test one :driver:
-
Get the M3's front wishbones/control arms and bushes, along with the rear subframe bushes. You'll find it feel like someone's put a tarmac magnet under the car. :happy2:

Would be TTRS or 1M for me & would be hard to choose between them now!
