Title: Proud owner of this... New PIX added - some advice needed!
Post by: duncan on March 10, 2009, 06:44:45 pm
I am now the proud owner of a 2006 Candy white GTI with loads of extra's:

drove from east sussex to west yorkshire to pick it up (then drove back with it the same day)

first thoughts of the car (bearing in mind when i put the deposit on the car i had never driven the Golf or a car with DSG)

Ride: firm but comortable - would definetly not want it to be any softer, handles great! loads of grip, responsive steering (has the 18' wheels) ride doesnt feel too firm at all and through the corners is just great

Performance:

it has had the WALD conversion similar to being chipped by bluefin or ST3 except it keeps the VW warranty
was extremely responsive and has only done 15k miles so as the drive went on the car became more and more responsive and just powers through each gear, was really supprised just how much torque there is - have part exchange a 172 cup and that was a pretty quick car but just didnt have the low down power

DSG: as i expected - GREAT!! auto when you want it - manual when you dont - great for saving fuel on the motorway just keep it in 6th and you dont drain the tank.  i did 340 miles on a full tank with a mix of traffic, motorway cruising and driving on country lanes, keep at around 70 on the motorway and gave it some on some of the quieter roads when the traffic died down - was pleased with the economy for how good the performance is.

Extra's / cabin:
i think the cabin is great, arguments over whether it is better than the a3 im sure still remain but am really pleased with it and dont find it lacking in any way.
Stereo - is ok, a little disapointed in sound quality but nice to have a 6 cd changer in the arm rest, may consider replacing some of the stock speakers

also would like to get a bluetooth kit maybe parot not sure yet

otherwise fantastic car - am really really over the moon with it

Cheers

Duncan

ps pictures to follow tomorrow

Sounds good.

Used to have a Clio 172 cup & the 182 cup. (Enjoyed the 172 cup more, raw, light weight, awesome handling)

GTI will definately give you the Turbo low down grunt though, but I wouldnt sling it around like the 172 cup though!

how do you take the badge off? to be honest wouldnt mind taking both off!

could i get my local VW dealer to do it or is that a big mistake? no idea what is involved when it comes to de-badging

Just get a hair dryer over the badges to soften to glue behind and an old credit card etc to peel it away, bit of meths, white spirit or petrol over the excess adhesive to get rid of it and polish over it and top off with a fine coat of wax, should be all that’s too it.

If you use an air gun be very careful over the time it's hovering over the badge, don’t want to blister the paint, but you'd have to be daft to do that.

Also, welcome  :happy2:

have just bought some more cleaning products, so will give her a clean + debadge and take some more snaps.

car hasnt been without problems but am still thrilled with it.

the coil packs went 5 days into owning the car,

now have one of the tyres leaking on the join with the alloy - was reseated and that seems to have fixed it for now = fingers crossed..

couple of things ive noticed on the car but it could just be me being paranoid - firstly this might sound stupid or maybe some other owners have noticed this but when i first start my car it sounds alot like a Diesel

also am getting a bit of rubbing when im hard lock left....

and finally MPG.. not sure if this is typical of the GTI but ive probably done about 90 miles and used half a tank.  this has all been in london traffic but am getting average mgp on all my journeys of less than 22mpg..

the car has had the WALD conversion but still can it get as low as this??

the coil packs went 5 days into owning the car,
Unfortunately a known problem with mk5. Make sure all coil packs are replaced - replacing a faulty one somehow precipitates the failure of the others.

when i first start my car it sounds alot like a Diesel
Normal.

also am getting a bit of rubbing when im hard lock left....
Get it checked out. Shouldn't happen.

and finally MPG.. not sure if this is typical of the GTI but ive probably done about 90 miles and used half a tank.  this has all been in london traffic but am getting average mgp on all my journeys of less than 22mpg..
Depends on driving style (ie how hard you're pressing with the right foot). I used to get something similar in a stop-start journey over 5 miles on a 10 mile commute to work.
25mpg is typical around town.
30-35mpg is more typical on DC/motorways but you still have to be prudent.

Looking good Duncan, really chuffed Jim sorted your cleaning stuff out... :happy2:

Stealth has answered most of your questions, I'm getting at least 100 miles to a 1/4 tank, then it suddenly drops off the last 1/4 so average about 340-350 a tank full.. :drinking:

thanks Wayne,

is that mainly motorway driving? ive done 100 miles and used half a tank now... very suprised how thirsty it is in stop start town driving...

Hi,

No thats, A and B roads, some dual carrage way too and stop start when I get nearer to work at it's on the outskirts of Dudley (nr Brum) does have the occasional spirited run  :signLOL:

do you think there is something wrong with my car since its caining fuel?

or could it just be becuase it is running 240bhp this means it uses alot more fuel?
Title: Re: Proud owner of this... New PIX added - some advice needed!
Post by: WhiteGTI on March 22, 2009, 04:55:48 pm
What Stealth said is correct really. I tend to get 320ish to a tank, with a mixture of motorway/slow town driving/fast driving.

90 miles to half a tank doesn't sound right, but then again, if your only doing around 22mpg in busy stop start town traffic then maybe it is right...

I'd keep an eye on it. You should be getting around 100miles per quarter for the first half, then it drops off a lot for the second half. I only get about 120miles to the second half of the tank!

I think even stop start journey's 22 mpg is to low, I would invest in diagnostic rolling road session and find out for sure.

the car is still under warranty so would like to get them to look at it for free...

otherwise how much would the rolling road session cost to do? would be interested anyway to see what power the car is running

Rolling roads are around £50-£60 normally, or around £30-£40 when its a group day.

This normally includes 3 power runs and a print out of your best run.

Post by: duncan on March 22, 2009, 06:00:44 pm
that sounds pretty reasonable - can anyone reccomend any ones near surrey / west london?

do they just put the car on the rollers and give you a print out? how would this help find out if i had a problem with burning too much fuel?
Title: Re: Proud owner of this... New PIX added - some advice needed!
Post by: stealthwolf on March 22, 2009, 06:33:54 pm
Dunno about other rollers but at JKM you get a power/torque curve and a power/afr:p curve. The latter tells you the air:fuel ratio used so you know if you're running too rich or too lean.
Title: Re: Proud owner of this... New PIX added - some advice needed!
Post by: duncan on March 22, 2009, 09:45:25 pm
That does sound useful - will ring the one closest to me to see if they do the same service.

if it is running rich or lean - what is the fix? is that something i would take the car to VW for?

I would agree with TC , does seem very low duncan. Depends at what point you fill up (empty on guage?)
Remember theres accumulated average MPG so unless you specifically reset the average at fill up , the mpg average will be across all fill ups since you last reset.....

At the very least the average mpg (if reset at the last fillup) , should tally (roughly) with the tank size.
So for me

last tank 370 miles travelled at average 30 mpg. I filled up on empty (but not reserve)

370/30 = 12.33 gallons
12.33 x 4.54 = 56 litres which is roughly the expected tank size  :happy2:

in town driving , the GTI does not do well tbh for mpg. A good rr session will put your mind at rest  :innocent:

Thanks John

100 miles for half a tank does seem like a bit of a joke to me but that has been 100% town driving and very short journeys.

my average mpg seems to reset itself every time i start a new journey, tonights journey which was probably only about 7 miles was an average of about 17mpg....

would a rolling road session show up straight away if my car was running lean?

The first avg is auto reset during the current journey time only (ign on/off) (it has a 1 on the display)
second press gets you the accum average (a 2 is displayed)
I'd get the manual out  :happy2:

heres an example from my blog (note the small 2 indicates its an accumulated average since I last manually reset)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.johnoldfield.dsl.pipex.com%2Fimages%2Fweblog%2Fed30mpg_19point5kmiles_spotted.jpg&hash=057b84d304d5d08ea01fa72977c410bcac3d2026)

remember simple stuff like tyre pressures, in car items on (heated seats/ICE etc), fuel type used could effect your MPG
I assume you arent running non OE tyre sizes that may through out the speedo?

Good Luck and let us know how you get on  :happy2:

have cycled through the display and i seem to only get the mpg 1 up, will double check.  as for tyre pressures and tyres, running standard monza II's with conti 3's alround, pressure is 32psi allround

will check the average MPG 2 and see what it says - how often does that reset?

Welcome to the forum Duncan. Sorry I'm late reading this thread but you mentioned a rubbing on the left lock?
Check with your local dealer and see if your car had a re-call for the steering rack ( also check the back of your service manual for any recall codes ). I had an 05 Tornado Red DSG with a "Grinding" sound on full left lock. I remember discussing it on another forum and found many other owners had the same problem. I think Red Robin also had the recall.  I was under the impression that the issue was resolved before your model year though.

As for your MPG dilemma, I often only manage 270 - 280 per tank  :scared: although I do commute on a terrific bit of A road every day. My previous R32 was only managing 19 MPG.  :ashamed:
