Title: How long to remove downpipe?
Post by: johnhol78 on May 10, 2011, 01:35:27 pm
Going to remove my precat so the downpipe needs taking off....

Will put it on axle stands so no problems there...though how long are we talking for someone to remove the downpipe? Was thinking about doing it tonight when i get home.....that gives me 2-3 hours of light...

Is that enough?

a bit late but it took me 2 hours to remove downpipe knock out cat and put it back together. Just make sure bolts are warmish and soak them in wd40. By the way im no mechanic but i dont mind getting my hand dirty. If i was to do this again i think i could do whole job in 1 hour.

It's pretty easy, and I reckon I did it within an hour at a very relaxed pace. It's the usual story of being an unpleasant on your back, under the car experience. So probably best done when you're in a relaxed Saturday mood, than after work, when there's the need to get it sorted for the following morning.

Beware of the dust generated when you break up the cat.

What did you use to break the pre cat?

Cold chisel and lump hammer to remove the bulk of it, then that left the fibrous material that sits between the stainless wall and what was the cat matrix. I used a radial wire brush head in a drill to remove the fibrous residue and glue.

i used a flat head and a hammer. Again used wire brush to get the bits of round the edge.

No need to change the map - my stock car seems fine.

I'd expect you'll notice a hint more exhaust noise from the tailpipe, and there will be a very slight tapety exhaust noise from the downpipe, due to the lack of attenuation of the pre-cat. At least this has been my experience.
