Hey all,
Just found out the car at 5 years old and 74k has not had its cambelt replace, so gonna get straight onto that, local vw garage (bristol) quote was £299 for parts and labour which seems pretty reasonable? if i wanted water pump replaced they dont charge for labour just the cost of the part at £100
So £399 all in if i want it done with water pump, what do you guys reckon about that price?
The car will be due for its big 80k service at some point soon, again they said they had a deal on for this, £250? should i just get this done now early whilst the offer is on? how much are they normally?

Hi Janus, just had the job done on mine at 69k miles it cost me €550 here in Spain so if that is from an official VW outlet that is a good price. Just check that they do the rollers and there is another belt down there as well (AC IIRC) as well as the water pump. My drive belt was OK, just a little worn but the water pump impellers were in a worse state. If i were you i would get it done ASAP, as if anything goes wrong on this score we all know the end result ££££...once its done you feel a lot better accelerating i can assure you!

Seems like a very good price, my cambelt and waterpump cost £750 including MOT, CV Boot replacement, full service and brake fluid change! :happy2:

I got a quote from a local independent garage for a quote.
using genuine VW cambelt kit - belt and tensioners + Waterpump and coolant - £300 all in...
Might be worth just getting a couple of quotes?

yeah ok might check out a few independants, however checking google i cant seem to identify any VW specialists? I would expect an indie to come in cheaper but VW offer a 2 yr warranty, is a £100 more worth it for that little bit more of peace and mind!
interestingly, my car has a recall on it, the ignition coils or something?! they will do that aswell....

Cheers Rich, just spoke to them - really helpfull actually but didnt think they could better the price offered by VW, will def use them in the future though!

no probs, worth a try.
Ref the two years warranty - im pretty certain you get the warranty from VW on the part itself and i dont think it has to be fitted by VW themselves.... I stand to be corrected but if im right, i hope it gives you piece of mind.
also, may people have the misconception that VAG stands for "Volkswagen Audi Group"...

Im having my cambelt and waterpump done on the 23rd. Robinsons Norwich wanted £330 for the cambelt but £120 to do the water pump because they said the water pump was £68 then there is labour to change the gasket etc. I told them about it being £399 on the vw website for the cambelt and the waterpump however they were unable to match it........... muppets. They also wanted £54.85 for an MOT, again way over priced.
The stupid thing is i phoned Robinsons Lowestoft who are about 20 miles apart from Robinsons Norwich and they could do the cambelt and waterpump for £399 and do the MOT for £39 as per the vw website.
I find it crazy how different the prices can be especially as there the same franchise.
Anyways rant over :fighting:

Sometimes I don't think the franchises talk to one another at all...
Been looking to retrofit cruise control to my car, so fired off an email to 5 of my nearest VW dealers and independents. Listers Stratford-on-Avon cam back with £270 while Listers Nuneaton came back with £180 (which even my trusted Indy couldn't beat). You would think there would be some sort of pricing structure across a franchise!

clubgti forum - VAG is Volkswagen Audi Group, and is the name of the UK operation. I don't think its used any more by the company itself, since incorporating Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, etc.
Volkswagen AG is the German for Volkswagen Corporation and as pointed out, is short for Volkswagen AktienGesellschaft
mk1golf forum- look in any UK media from the '80s. The point is VAG stood for 2 DIFFERENT companies, hence the confusion
Volkswagenwerk AG = A company registered in Germany formed with the building of Wolfsburg to develop the KDF (this company authors the Golf owners manual for Europe)
VW Audi Group = A company that was registed in the UK in 1978, when the sales and marketing depts joined together over here as a single registered company. Since VW-Audi also added more and more brands to its portfolio, that company eventually became known as VW Group UK

I'm getting mine done on the 23rd too (as it appears that the previous owner didnt have it done at 4 years - well its not on the VW system thats its had one) , and I am paying £399 with waterpump change , and using the free shuttle bus into Edinburgh (laid on by the Dealer) to spend the day as a tourist , while they do my car , before being picked up and taken back to the garage to collect it! Im getting the annual service and MOT done at the same time (free , as I got a 2 year service plan thrown in when I bought the car)

BTW don't buy the std VW price bullsh*t, I phoned round three main VW dealers (Cheltenham, Gloucester and Cirencester) when it was cambelt time was quoted £300 for cambelt only, £400 for cambelt and water pump, and £330 for cambelt and water pump, went for £330 obviously!! all main dealers, official agents and two were owned by inchcape, depends on how hungry they are. phone around and haggle :) yes there is a std VW price but they are all businesses and are either busy or keen, remember you are a customer, I paid £330 all in three months ago from a VW main agent :grin: with a receipt on VW headed paper, oh and when they had the car they said it was on the coil pack "campaign" list and they did these for free as well, how good was that. Final thought, very un pc, the service lady was about 22 and as hot as they get :grin: :grin: she will get all my business in future, best price or not!!

JMSPEAR you definitely got a good deal there. Fair enough if none of them wanted to drop there price from £399 for cambelt and waterpump, however its when they try and get more than their so called FIXED price thats annoys me. Robinsons Norwich tried but failed as i took my custom elsewhere. It was almost laughable as you can imagine my phone call reponse " how much? Your fixed pricing should be £399 for the cambelt and waterpump unless the engine is over 2 litres". Their reponse " Sorry sir we cant match that, thats our best price". :confused:
