Which one and why?
- ignore price - just go with the one you like best
- based upon the ED35 having the Golf R engine with just a lower bhp from the factory.
:happy2:
-
Edition 35 has lots of little quirky extras and I like things like that :signLOL:

Elaborate please
-
The Edition 35 little accents everywhere, keyless ignition, the awesome seats
I could go on lol
Id quite like one
-
R coz it doesn't have exhausts like wheelbarrow handles!
-
Golf R for me - 4wd and over 300bhp with a remap!
Just the ticket!
Waiting for them to become affordable will be a pain though
-
Id have the R... much better way of putting the power down!
-
Actually, I think I would have the R. 4wd for the win

the ed35 seats looks great, other than that not that special to look at. is it TSI or TFSI powered??

From what the German forums are saying, it is a TFSi just like the ED30 :happy2:
-
Golf R all day long, looks alot better than the ed35 and has 4wd..... no brainer when price is out of the equation.
-
R for sure.
Haldex wins every time.
-
almost ashamed now to say 35
-
Its odd, when i had the choice of the R32 and the ED30 i went for the ed30, but with these two i would much rather have the R
-
Either, im not fussy :happy2:

There's an R in one of the dealers down in Southampton with your name on it Steve

Golf R for me,
The new ed35 doesn't really state "35" years if you ask me, the seats in the ed30 are similar to the mk1,along with other bits,
The ed35 doesn't show any type of resemblance to the mk1
But that's just my 2p's worth! :drinking:
-
That is lovely John but I didn't see any lube on offer. :surprised:
.:R for me every time. :happy2:
-
I too pondered the R32/ Ed30 dilemma and went for the Ed30 in 2007 purely as I didn't want the 3.2 6 pot guzzler.
Even though the 6 pot sound is rather fab.
So given the choice now of 4 pot turbo FWD, or 4 pot turbo 4WD, I'd have the R. So that's what I'd buy/voted for.
That said if I didn't still need VW Golf practicality, baby seat, dogs and golf clubs etc.
I might have a ponder at a Rocco R, (sorry do realise this is a Ed35 or R vote off).
Seem to recall EVO mag stated the Rocco R (FWD chassis), which is a bit lighter than the 4WD Golf R, was the VW designers preferred tool.
I guess the Golf R/Rocco R/S3 engine in a FWD Golf is actually an Ed30, which kind of brings me full circle..
-
Golf r 4wd is the way for me,time john finishes with it be over 500bhp :signLOL:

Everything great except It's the worst colour for the R. Blue, red or white look best on the R. Imo

Nice but £36,995 nice????? :surprised:

after the Edition30 ,must be the R20 ,4x4 FTW :happy2:
-
ED35.
The R is a bit too shouty for me, I wouldn't appreciate the 4-mo as it's nothing more than a dead weight in anything but the rain and I don't go drag racing. At least the R32 had the soundtrack to make it a different animal from the GTI.
Likewise I'd take a Rocco R over a Golf R. Give me less weight, add a real diff and c£8k saving any day of the week.
-
Golf R over the ED35.. It would be more difficult to decide between a Rocco R and Golf R as my mind changes daily between them 2
-
See your going for the R from the other forum. I still think your mad not sticking with the RS considering.
Just specced up the R..............
£42,438 :o £9,443 of options on it :-X
The RS3 I had on order was £42,370 ???
VAG pricing strategy seems mad to me!!
-
Difficult to answer as I still didn't make my mind 100% about which car I will buy to replace my crashed Audi A3.
I'm considering: Golf GTI, Golf R, Scirocco R, A3, S3.
I'm going to test drive a Golf GTI and a Golf R next week-end, so may be things will appear clearer for me.
Any way, I voted for the ED35.
The golf R Bumpers and exhaust look sexiest than the GTI.
The TFSI engine is much easier to upgrade.
But, as said Tony Danza, the Golf R got (IMO) a pointless and heavy (120 extra kg) four wheels drive transmission.
I rather prefer the lighter and cheaper FWD GTI ED35. You can still fit a LSD to improve traction and an APR K04 turbo kit which will provide as much power as a Golf R.
About my personnal choice I think I will stick with an A3 for the same reason.
Scirocco look is a little bit showy for me and got much too thick wind screen pilar which bother my view while driving.
-
Depends on if you want a red car or a blue one!
Red: ED35
Blue: R
-

I did the same and would agree re this as well ....
-
For me the 35 is the one. Get close to £40k and a world of options open up. The GTi is's a great £20k somethih car it's no £30k+ car
Have a read about the BMW1M M3 suspension and brakes (360mm F) 10 and 9 inch lightweight 19's rwd with a clever LSD way better weight distribution and chassis a 6 cyl 3.0 litre twin turbo and properly sorted by BMW M department. Plus it sounds great out if the box
Scirocco R if I wanted to spend £30k something and keep the VW badge
-
My 135i is a staggeringly good bit of kit out of the box, proper Cayman S pace - obviously lacks the delicacy and feel of Pork (what has it?), but adds 2 more seats and stage 1 380BHP potential in a sublimely balanced chassis.
I've yet to get behind the wheel of a 1M, but if it's my car dialled up to 11, then it'll be superb.
As has been said, a Golf always will be at its best as a £25k hot hatch, straying too far up the price range puts it in a league it can't and shouldn't compete in.
-
I would have bought a Golf R ... but ended up with a 330d coupe.
The price was about the same as the Golf but the build quality is in a different league ... which is a shame. I wanted a Golf R but it just isn't worth the money they are asking. It needs to be at least 5K cheaper ...
-
hurdy if you were to buy the ed35, you would of course map it and then it wouldnt be any different to the ed30 then, at least with the Golf R your getting something abit different
-
A lot of peeps are whinging about the price of the R, but I bet the 35 is getting for 30 grand with a few choice options. The standard GTI's list price is nigh on £25K for a 3 door manual, so a 5 door DSG 35 will be a lot more than that.

According to the "Konfigurator" on the German site, the ED35 is 3,150 euro's more than the stock GTI (approx £2,750).
Now nearly everyone would have the 18" Monza's and leather, which are £2,335, so you are basically talking £400 for the extra detailing and the more powerful engine.
However, I bet you could get around £2k to £3k off a normal GTI and what is betting VW play the old "no discount on the ED35" card!!!
-
They said they wouldn't discount the ED30 - half an hour had 10% off the price when I looked all those years ago. Dealers would be idiotic not to negotiate, as the next dealer will.
Good point well made though, Hurdy, the extra spec will be more than the extra cost.
-
A GTI with 18s and full leather would have nicer wheels and seats and still be cheaper, though!
From what I've read the E888 seems pretty tunable, so the extra 25 horsies is hardly an issue, is it?
I still think a more door 35 with the bafflingly popular auto box will be north of 30 grand and there's some seriously nice used cars available for that sort of dosh. No way would I spend that on a FWD hatch.
-
On a slightly different note but on the subject of silly prices I've just 'built' a 1.4 TSi S-Tronic A1 with a few nice options but it comes out at £28k!!!
£28 large for a mini hatchback :stupid: That sort of dollar would buy you a pretty decent used S3, and not a very old one at that.
-
I have tried to do the sums on a ED35 with 3dr ,dsg, met grey, xenons ,I have factored in 8-10% discount and it doesnt seam to bad .The rns510 at £2k ?? . can i not just add that later for £500 .
-
I think 8-10% discount might be a little ambitious
RNS for £500 is ok but it wouldn't be brand new and wouldn't include the roof mount GPS and cabling and of course it wouldn't carry the 3 year warranty. I agree though £2k is a lot, does that include anything else such as DAB as I'm sure the RNS is less than that on the MK6 etc.
-
Can we not have the option to not have either and keep our own? Im sure there are others who wouldnt swap for either? :drinking:
-
Pointless poll anyway. I get the impression the decision has already been made, the way the 35 gets defended against any other suggestion!
-
Huh?
The R is in front on the poll by a mile and there's a good spread of pros & cons.
Flick the chip off your shoulder.
-
why not the Golf R john?
IMO way better looking, lighter, better looking, better std setup than both the 35 and R and way cheaper.
