Title: engine noise is noisier??

hi all,

still have my horrible engine noise.. its like a clanky noise when engine is running.. similar to the usual tappit noise but a much lower tone.. vag people cant be sure where it comes from so never really any help... REALLY NEED A GOOD MK5 GTI OWNER that knows their stuff and noises...
you can hear it at its worst from under the dash area and its generally only noisey when the engine is warm.. PULLEY, BEARING, BOTTOM END, DMF???? just about had enough of this now..  is there a meet anywhere soon or anyone local ish to aylesbury who knows their stuff?

what sort of engine noise/problem would be noisier once engine is warm?

There is an issue where the cam chain tensioner goes and it makes an (even more) diesel sound.  There is a chain on the right hand side of the block as well as a belt on the left hand side.  Supposed to be maintenance free but people have had this issue, seems more common on the early AXX engines but this might just be because they are older / likely to have done more miles by now.

so the problems you are describing... would they tend to be more noisey once the engine is warm?

I believe so yes, Gene Hunt on here had this issue IIRC, you could PM him.

If you do a search on this forum for 'chain tensioner' you'll see a good few threads popping up.

my service book has a tick in the box which says

toothed belt: tensioning roller changed

has done 10k since. is this the same thing?

Vagtune in Aylesbury are very good - if you can't identify the problem yourself I am sure they will be able to help  :happy2:

that is where my car goes for all its work... they could here DMF chattering away but couldnt pin point the other noise.. not sure but think it was just a quick check.. r u in aylesbury then? seen a few gti's about

No, that will be for the belt.  IF its the chain tensioner its internal to the engine on the right hand side.
