Title: Keeping GTI up to date and serviced

Hi all,

Still looking for my perfect GTI but one thing occurred to me what with all the talk of coilovers needign replaced in a recent recall etc. I go to a mechanic at the moment at he is great when it comes to quality of work and price. I can easily see my local VW Stealer charging double. How can I know if there are any further recalls, software updates etc without getting my car serviced with VW every year?

Is there anything other times that require me to go to VW? I assume I have to go to them to get software updates etc

I suppose my main question is why should I go to a VW dealer to get serviced etc when most people find what they need here ie Issue about coilovers. What are the benefits apart from maybe easier resale if it's stamped by dealer?

PS. There doesn't seem to be any results returned for MK5 GTI's between 2005-2011. Is that correct?

One thing to note is that that link only highlight true recalls.  The ignition coil replacement is a 'campaign' and not an official recall so unless you go to your dealer (or visit here!) you won't know about them.  A proper recall is only likely to happen when they think there is a significant risk to life.

You could just take your car to the stealer for its MOT and they will check for any outstanding campaigns at that time (MOT's are discounted at the dealers).  Or just ring them with the reg no and ask ...

VW do fixed price servicing now which IMO is pretty good value for money considering they are a main dealer and you get the VW stamp.  I have been quoted more to do a service and brake pad change at an indy than VW are asking.  To be fair its a relatively expensive indy but it just shows you cant assume they will all be cheaper.

Plus if you have a VW extended warranty (not original 3 year manufacturer warranty), it is a requirement that your car is dealer serviced.
