had the car 3 weeks......
Cambelt (previous owner had never changed this) - 300
Water pump (thought might as well get it done at the same time) - 100
Front break pads (80% worn, need to be changed) - 130
CV Boot split - 130
Rear washer jet - 6
£666 hope thats not a sign of things to come! ha......
did get the car pretty cheap so trying not to dwell on the early output!....grrr
-
is it the price or the devil connotations that your worried about?
-
both! ha... ahh well....
-
£130 for front pads???? That's scandalous!
Genuine Bosch (OE) pads are £29 and take no longer than 25 mins to fit both sides, especially if the cars already on the ramps for the cambelt change. I would question that one personally.
-
yeah? havent paid for the pads yet was gonna try some indy's first....how much would you expect to pay for front pads and fitting?
i got a couple of quotes for the cambelt and VW was the cheapest....
-
I wouldnt spend more than £60 personally with the parts + fitting
-
I was going to comment earlier about the pads but wasn't sure on labour rates etc. OP go to eurocarparts.com or ring TPS, any mechanic can change brake pads.
-
do i need to get specific pads tho for the gti??
-
just get some OE replacements from a good brand, Bosch are my favouirite as they are good quality and usually what you get from TPS.
-
Fit the pads yourself will save you even more plus you will start to get to know your car better once youve been underneath it a couple of times! and do the diverter valve to Rev D while you have the driver side wheel off
-
Rich, if their sole function wasnt to stop the car i might consider giving it a go! :driver: what is the diverter vavle? Why make this change?
Just got my car back from VW, on the whole they were really good but their quote on the pads was insane, it was infact £146,60
i got a quote from a Local VW specialist, "streetwise" they quoted
£78.90 - Labour + What he described as a good set of pads
or
£105.90 - Labour + OEM pads from VW
either way much cheaper than VW, i'm tempeted to go for the cheaper pads, will it really make a big difference? whats everyone thoughts?
-
Have i read that right? are they saying (the indy) that the labour is cheaper when fitting their pads than the genuines? It makes no difference what make they are the fitting is the same!
Gav

My bad :ashamed: Just realised ive read it wrong. :stupid:

Buy some OE spec bosch pads for £34.99 and supply them to the garage? labour shouldnt be more than 45 mins which would include installing the car on some ramps and taking your time to clean the old calipers and carriers. I charge 1 hour for front and rears.

hey PDT, ok sounds good....can you send me a direct link to the pads? Are Bosch a good name? if they are OE are they made by VW or something?
-
Honestly I can get my pads changed for £10, I'll buy the parts for £30. I overlook what's happening and get involved so it's fun uswel.
-
Not being funny but a pad change is v v easy, get a mate to do it for £20 worth of beer tokens if you are not confident, it is as easy as changing a wheel :stupid: ok get whoever you would ask to change a wheel to do it!
-
on the cambelt phone around I had £300 for cambelt only, £400 for cambelt and water pump or £330 for cambelt and water pump all from different VW main agents, in Cheltenham, Glos and Cirencester, all no more than 15 mins drive from my house, went with the £330 all in for belt and pump!! the two most far apart i.e. the £400 and £330 were both owned by inchcape!! Go figure, worth ALWAYS phong round for quotes, their is NO STANDARD vw pricing. HTH's John
-
alright cool.....if its as easy as said i will ask a couple of mates, see if i can get someone 2 do it, my gf's dad is pretty handy with cars, will try him! PDT recommended some pads, can anyone recommend some alternates, i wudnt know which ones to buy?!
JMSPEAR, which VW garage offered you £330 for the cam and pump. i might called Bristol Heritage and complain as they said its a standard price and wouldnt be beaten by VW...!?
