Title: Please Help! Getting the dreaded diesel noise fixed...
Post by: cojomo2 on May 17, 2011, 10:49:44 am
Hi,

New to this site..some great info on it...

Anyway, I am due to drop my car into the mechanic to get it fixed..he's not sure what's causing the noise but I told him I researched it online and am pretty sure it's the timing chain and associated parts.

Unlike some info I have read here, the noise on my car can not be heard on start up, and then fades when the engine warms up..it's the exact opposite.

When I start it up, it sounds perfect..after about 10 mins, when the engine has warmed up, as soon as I stop the car in traffic, I can hear a ''knock knock knock'' type noise. It's not the light ticking noise the injectors make, but a heavier ,louder noise. I wouldn't describe it as a rattle though, but does sound like a milder version of a diesel.

On another site, I read that a guy had his sorted under warranty and got the timing chain, tensioner, a valve and the variator/adjuster (most expensive part) replaced and it solved the problem. I gave my mechanic the link to the site and he said he can change these parts too, costing close to a grand all in..

Does anyone know if all these parts need replacing? Or if even replacing them should fix my problem?

Anyone with a similar issue, that has had it resolved? If so, I 'd love some advice..supposed to be dropping it in soon, and don't have the cash to be replacing parts that may not need replacing.

Cheers

Get the cam follower on the fuel pump checked too. When these fail, they make alot of noise.

Hi Alex, thanks for the reply.

The car has already been in for an inspection, the mechanic checked the cam follower and said it's ok, also had a look at the timing chain and said it looks normal...I told him that I read that a guy with the same problem had all the parts I mentioned in my above post replaced and problem sorted, so he agreed to to same...only the guy that had them replaced had it done under warranty, so had the timing chain and 'all associated parts' replaced...just wondering if that is necessary, of if just the timing chain and tensioner should do the trick?

Id possibly get a second opinion on it, and get someone to have a really good lock as it sounds like a tensioner or something, but a knock sound suggests a bearing perhaps

This is a 2nd opinion..first guy said it was just the injectors..which it's not.

Here is a video that is pretty similar to the way mine sounds, any ideas?

nope, it doesn't..out of curiosity , if it did, what would this indicate?

Thought the tfsi engines were known for noisy injectors..... but i'm no expert....

The 2.0 TFSI engines are known to be noisy as they have a high pressure fuel rail and pump  :happy2:

the first mechanic was a general mechanic, the one thats looking at it now is sort of a VAG specialist. I can hear the injectors ticking away when I lift the hood, hardly notice it from inside the cabin, this noise is louder and can be heard inside the cabin..really annoying! Have a listen to the you tube video I posted and see what you think.

Thanks.

Edit: Also had the car in getting a dsg oil change in a stealer and asked them about the noise...they said they thought it was the 'timing chain and associated parts' , quoted me a fortune. They also said it was no harm, that they had never seen a timing chain snap...but the noise is driving me nuts, I only have the car a short while...

Is yours a 2.0TFSI GTI mate?

That engine doesnt have a timing chain. It has a timing belt

Cheers Alex..I don't think there is one thread relating to a diesel noise on the mk5 gti that I haven't read at this stage!

Just hoping to get feedback of someone here who has had it done, and exactly what they had replaced.

I notice some have a noise on cold start up, that disappears when the engine warms up ...others don't have it on a cold start up, but only when the engine warms up, at idle (same as mine)..they must be 2 different issues, just want to be sure before I spend $$$ on trying to fix it..

Possibly a breather issue. the engine note should change quite drasticly when the dipstick is removed. check the dipstick tube isnt cracked and none of the pcv pipes under the engine cover arent loose/leaking.

hi,

I have a 2006 GTI. It makes the exact same noise as in that movie, and as in what you have described.
I'm also fairly sure it is the timing chain and will have it replaced eventually.

I've read several acounts from people on a Danish VAG forum, with that stupid clattering noise.
Their engine was the 2.0 FSI(no turbo). For them the noise was fixed by replacing chain and tensioner. Be aware that the timing is a tricky job to adjust so double check that it is absolutely correct afterwards(ally yourself with an expert in VAG-com)

Btw lifting the dipstick with the motor running, definately changes how it sounds and runs on my car.
Also please update the forum with the results if you deside to get the chain done.  :happy2:

Hey,

Thanks for the info. I have to correct an earlier post, my engine does indeed make a different noise( and not a very good one) when I pull out the dipstick while the engine is at idle, this is normal I take it.

My option is to
A) replace chain and tensioner , probably costing about 300-350 euro, or
B) replace chain, tensioner, adjuster/variator , valve and cover..costing about 1,000 euro

If I do A, and it doesn't work, and then have to do B it will cost about 1,200 euro...

Really unsure about what to do..money is very tight at the moment :(

Edit: is yours a DSG? If so, when you put it into N, does the noise quieten down a bit?

just out of curiosity i pulled my dipstick out today with the engine running , the engine ran lumpy when pulled out which i think you guys mean when the engine note changes , but added to this there sounded like an air leak which sounded like it was coming from my front pcv valve , put the dipstick back in and air leak gone pull it out and air leaks back , is this normal?
sorry to hijack your thread  :ashamed:

Sorry to pull an old thread up but need some advice.

I also have the dreaded noise once the car is warm. It was in need of a cambelt change at 48000 miles anyway so I went all out and got timing belt kit, water pump and the timing chain and tensioner. But I do still have that poxy noise. Really getting to me now. Does anybody know what it could be now. I have read that my engine (AXX) isn't really affected by the cam follower so was wondering if it would be the adjuster for the cam chain. I was told by a friend at TPS thay this is about 200 quid. Would I need to buy another chain and tensioner to replace this or can I use the one I bought and fitted last month?...

All your help would be muchly appreciated  :happy2:
