Title: Leather seats
Post by: essoman on May 19, 2011, 07:00:10 pm
Can someone please tell me what is the best way to care for the leather seats.I have some AG leather cleaner and AG creme.I am slightly confused as previous posts here state that VW seats have some form of plastic coating,so is it wise to use the AG products I already have ? cheers.

If you had proper leather seats, they'd be okay. But you don't. You have VW "leather", which means it's been coated. Any leather feed would just sit on top. Imagine your arm wrapped in cling film and try applying moisturiser cream. It won't reach your skin.

Ive used the AG stuff on my seats the cleaner is good and I did use the conditioner as well I was aware of JPC comments and had just used cleaner bbut the leather started looking rather dry and I think it has improved through conditioning  the pictures arent great phone camera in the dark but

as they were

with conditioner on before wiping down to matte finish

IMHO the seats are looking alot better and tighter and the car certianly has a good leather smell, in the pictures above the arm rest is about 3 months old so has the original leather finish and colour and was left untreated and the seats now have that texture and appearance.  One thing that might make a big difference is model year my old house mate had a MY05 car with seats that feel very soft and supple mine is a MY06 early with aerial but still blue glass and the seats aren't as nice.  The leather cleaner and conditioner worked very well on the steering wheel gear stick and hand brake as well.

05ish was when VW started to apply a thicker PU coat to their leather

My old 2000 polo had a full leather interior and the quality of that leather is superior to that of the golf

To finsih off the pictures above I took a decent picture of my leather seats now after treatment and wipe down after leaving the AG conditioner to reside.

Now back to a perfect match with the leather arm rest cover.

The first picture is with a cloth arm rest cover.
