Here is an OEM aerial from the current Polo.
I'm in two minds about it, its much shorter but thicker (and stands out more???).
(the base fits perfectly)

It's an improvement on the standard antenna. I went for a citroen one I think, very short.

Got a Polo one on mine too & I love it. Had a Sharan one to start off with but had reception issues. No such problems with the Polo one. Good job!
-
Looks good mate, I replaced mine with a mk6 polo and think it's looks great! :happy2:
-
A few people have done this as the standard one looks awful.
Anyone know why they stopped with the aerial in the window? Mine never has reception issues, and much prefer the smooth look of the roof.

Does the Citroen one need any modifications to the base for a perfect fit?
-
It's as you see it in the pics - a straight fit. Not absolutely perfect so if you have OCD, it might bother you but for me it's so close that I'm happy with it. To get a perfect fit I think you have to cut off one turn of the base screw. Too much effort for minimal gain especially with the potential for damage to the roof.

Cost - it was cheaper to use a roof mounted aerial

I fitted a Sharan Stubby that someone supplied to me on here, reception for FM has dropped but AM reception improved, still a good FM signal at least while stationary.

Does the Sharan one just screw in after you unscrew the old one or has it a new base etc :happy2:
-
Just screws in same thread and base shaping is the same.
-
I have the same one as Rich and have absolutely no problems with reception at all. I guess it depends on which area you live in to some degree. It does look very neat though.
FWIW I'm not sure about that Polo one, it sort of looks like a stubby aerial that has been stretched and stretched!
-
Have the Polo antenna as well since the current Polo has launched.
Had the Tiguan antenne before. Radio reception seems little bit worse
with both compared to the larger Golf one.
Guess with the even smaller Peugeot/Citroen antennas reception will
be even worse. Unfortunately size matters !!
ps:
Rich, thanks for your testing - have to do this as well
-
I have the MY10 Polo one noe and have seen no drop in reception... My Sharan work could get no reception at all, though work fine on my '55 R32... Polo one looks OK, better than standard, but not as good as the Sharan... :happy2:

It is Dom's sharan one on my car above so it would seem model year has some affect as its working on mine, question would be do the later cars have both antennae working as per my RNS screen?
-
The later Mk.V with the roof antenna have one additional rear window antenna
as well if factory fitted with RCD300, RCD500 or RNS510.
The second window antenna is retrofitable on most cars.

You have any detail on activating the second rear screen antennae and what parts are needed? I am after just fitting the stubby going to look at fitting a shark fin on saturday current plan is to have the existing aerial under the head lining but the second rear window would be a more elegant solution.
-
Remove the plastic trim around the rear window and look if there is
a connector ready to fit an amplifier. If there is one your fine.
If there's not - :sad1:
Welding a connector to glass would be a very tough job - so no option.
VW sells a cheap shark fin dummy as well to close the hole.
My first Mk.V still had the two window antennas providing excellent
FM reception (with RCD300).
I will have a look for the necessary part numbers.

Cheers, I have a early MY06 I have some of the older features but not others, I have both the aerial elements in my rear screen, whether it has a connector on it or not I dont know, I assume one side will have the amplifier on it but not the other?
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_4kAgpBiQyvk/S8VzTl0az9I/AAAAAAAAAB0/hNnBlI2ff-A/s800/IMAG0236.jpg) The secondary filament at the top above the heating wire one on both sides that dont touch.

Yes, the arial elements are in place on all Mk.V, but if you have the roof antenna
you will have only one amp inside the lid.
VW used several rear windows from factory, but there are only three spare parts
all coming with the connector; one light green, one dark green and one blue glass.
Some come with the necessary connector from factory, some not. So first you have
to look for it. If there's no connector as said before retrofitment is too complicated.

Will take off the left hand side trim tonight from reading up it appears the right hand side one is in operation, do you have the part numbers for the missing amp? I assume it needs a power feed and then linking up to the aerial lead by the roof aerial.
-
I will find them if you find the connector, Ric !! :drinking:

Bit of an update I went out for a drive last night first time with the sharan aerial and the radio signal was not good, the signal strength jumped up and down causing a small selection of radio stations to be available and the signal of the ones I did get went from Stereo to Mono constantly so looks like I will move on to plan B fitting a shark fin  and sort out an alternative aerial location.
-
Noooo! Bummer, sorry dude! How is this the case? Could your headunit require more signal than the one I had in my R32?(had a basic oem single unit with 6 disc in the armrest... Or did the older r32's have the secondary amplifier that is spoken about...?
-
Hey Dom, Not sure what could be different it could be that the RNS which now does the diversity for the antenna isnt as good as the seperate box or doesnt boost the signal. It doesnt matter it was a potential cheap fix will fit a shark fin and do as recomended by Apollo13 and put the full aerial under the roof in the head lining and see how that goes, as a longer term solution I will have to look at the second rear window aerial once I have chance to remove the trim.

LOW,
the older Mk.Vs without roof antenna had two window arials when
they came with RCD300/500, RNS MFD or RNS510 from factory.
If fitted with RCD210 or RNS300 they came with just one window
antenna.
The later Mk.Vs came with roof antenna + one window antenna
except RCD210 and RNS300 which had the roof arial only.
