Title: Difference between Milltek TBE resonated and non-resonated
Post by: Jussa on May 26, 2011, 10:49:34 pm
I need help on 3 questions.

1. Is it difficult converting from resonated (which I currently have) to non-resonated?
2. If you can, what is the procedure?
3. Does a non-resonated setup have a horrible droning noise when driving long distance motorway trips?

Cheers  :happy2:

1. No - different centre section on Milltek at least.
2. As above
3. In my opinion yes however others will disagree.

I preferred the non res when I had my milltek fitted, forget about the noise after a while.

I have a full sports Milltek system which is resonated, one day whilst my car was in for a lower engine mount upgrade I was asked if I would like to try a non-resonated pipe I said yeah why not :happy2: within 24hrs I was back at the garage having my resonated put back on :sad1:

It drove me mad :stupid: I must admit it did have a louder note to it , but it was soooo noisy and droamy inside the car that I couldn't put up with it.

The resonated has a sweet tone and is hell of a lot quieter in the cabin, saying that its everyone's choice at the end of the day!

I have had resonated twice and non resonated twice.

Resonated gets my vote, non resonated was a bit loud, not badboy exhaust Saxo loud but it did drone a bit.

.
I had a little bit of droning, only at about 3,200 constant revs, on my first Milltek but never since on my current one. I've had both Res and Non-Res - The Res was far too quiet inside the car for my taste. My current one is bespoke by Milltek - It has a very small box in the centre section but hardly anything in the shallow back box.

Thanks guys, I'm quite convinced now, so just bought a non-res pipe £100 delivered to my door and will be trying it out next week.  :driver:
To be honest, the resonated that I have does sound 'too' standard for my liking at the mo, but then again famous last words come to mind!!
I'll let you know how I get on.  :drinking:

It is interesting to hear that people think that the Milltek system sounds quite "oem"

You would be very surprised if you opened up an oem exhaust and then a milltek one.

I thought the resonated pipe on mine was quieter that oem, bought the non res section and think it's spot on, no droning in my car?

You lot that say the GTI 'Non Res' is loud should try a 'Non Res' on a MK5 R32!!

personally I think a lot of the sound depends of the level of tune you are running. I started with the full turbo resonated and it was very tame, it was a different sound to standard but as red Robin said, too quiet, now the car is mapped running a whole host of other mods and now have the non res pipe fitted and well it now sounds pure evil. without sounding chavy
Title: Re: Difference between Milltek TBE resonated and non-resonated

.
Sound is very subjective and there's no right or wrong - We each have our different preferences and each hear slightly different frequencies better than others.

Milltek's whole approach is to produce a sound for the enthusiast but never to sound chavvy or to attract unwanted attention at low revs in town. APR and Blueflame exhausts sound good too but each in a different way.

I moved from res to non res, I was unhappy with the drown at 3,000-3,250 rpm. I have solved this to nearly as good at the non res by lining the boot metal base with Dynomat extreme. This is very easy to apply and you can put another layer on top for areas that still drone.

It damps the 'drum' boot floor pan that is the major source of that drone.

I started off with the Non res and sold the Res section as I wasnt happy with the sound it made in a friends car

I also added a layer of dynomat to help bass in the boot, but its also quietened the cabin too which is nice  :happy2:

You guys are so opposite to me. I like it when I travel with my back seats down so I can hear more zorst noize! I would never add soundproofing to my car and it's something I dislike about the Mk6. I have my exhaust sound for my benefit and not for other people outside my car.

To be fair robin it made almost no difference (and it wasnt intentional) as its such thin stuff. Just improves bass in the boot as I have a small sub lol!

I drive with my windows down most of the time anyway just to hear the turbo spool and the exhaust rumble  :signLOL:

That's brought a smile to my face.  :notworthy:

My Res Milly on the R32 was as quiet as a mouse on the M'way and I used to scare myself on the off ramps because the sound was so different. :sad1:

True... but you can have a go!  :driver:

I think that noise would scare pretty much anyone, never mind whizzing past a bunch of codgers with their hearing aids turned up to 11!

Wow, some interesting perceptions from everybody  :popcornsoda:  :signLOL:
I got it for £100 delivered from Awesome GTi
Really looking forward to hearing it, then I'll probably post a resonated 1 up for sale.
Can you believe though I just sorted and paid for my insurance through Adrian Flux yesterday with no points or convictions, and received a lovely letter in the post today - notification of intent to prosecute 48 in a 30 zone.  Anybody have any ideas what the fine or points will be?  I just hope I don't have to pay Adrian Flux anymore when I call them to declare  :scared:

The drone before Dynomat was at 3k and accelerating in top, enough to make me use Dynomat. I had an M5 with Kelleners exhaust and race cats before that was LOUD and the inside oppressive, but after Dynomat it was fab and a distant can am car......from the inside

No droning at all from my non-res and I've done 4 x Ring trips with it.........

Had mine for 2 years, and it doesn't drone enough for me to get rid. Takes a good 10k to start to quieten down...

Now if it had 6 cylinders in Non Res, id of bought shares in ear defenders..
