Your going to loose your geek tag MR P :fighting: Cant you bend a coat hanger and put foil on your head. :chicken:
Bet you have a few £ left over from selling the MK6 and replacing it with a 2005 GTI
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.
You got a list made up yet?
:happy2:
.
Methinks she looks like The Red Temptress. I also spotted some stickers and she's got a replacement front. So, K04 and already with a Quaife.
.Great spot - I missed the stickers.

It was like Xmas this morning at Pound Towers :signLOL: :signLOL:
I put the kit together myself, I should be fitting it this weekend and if everything is correct I will post a list of parts I ordered :happy2:
The handbrake looks mad. :notworthy:

Have you got a roll cage arranged Steve?
Nice RNS too!
Coming along great guns Boss! Can I have a go one day please? :notworthy:
Awesomeness.
Echo, which cage are you going for?? Weichers do some 1/2 cages off the shelf if you're not quite wanting the full shebang?
Not sure on the wheel, I found the Golf 'rack a bit long and that could be tricky for my style - for example, at Karrousel I grab the wheel at 6&12 approaching and then when I'm in the corner, my hands are 3&6 through the corner giving far better control. I guess I'll have to try it, it may be the new garlic bread!!
Nice RNS too!

The RNS is now finally running the latest firmware :P
Course you can have a go :happy2:
When doing the cage steve get them to add in a harness bar. It's not recommended to have the harnesses at 45 degrees pulling down on the seat like you have currently what I've read.
Hi Steve, looking good mate.
Dont forget to plug the rear washer water pipe, forgot to do mine and accidently squirted water into the rear parking censor cotrol box :ashamed:
When you get the cage fitted you will loose your seat belts, I had some Mk4 belts fitted. The roll cage prevents you having the roller in the door pillar recess but you can mount it outside, the full harness is great but a pain if your not on track.
I've got use to the steering wheel, but I can see what Mike is saying, I also needed the flat bottom as its easier to get in and out for me.
I've been looking into a large paddle on the left which shifts both up and down, similar to some WRC's, their not fitted to the wheel unlike the up/down shift buttons which work OK but are a bit hard to hit sometimes, the badge is a must.
Steve you forgot to take the templates at Bedford, I'll see you at Brunters or Combe. :happy2:

when with the Yanks in Afghan we had the luxury of poo bags & a plastic seat :) Funny having weigh ins  (Not much in the way of entertainment in the green zone) Reckon 4 kilos is doable :innocent:
Are you fitting bonnet catches Steve? On a long straight I could see the corner of mine lifting and I thought it wont be long before I could have a carbon windscreen
Hopefully not the Xtra large racer.
All will be revealed shortly :innocent:
I'm not sure yet if it's really Friday :party:
As soon as the car is home you will be getting photos
Well Steve bet you're glad to have it back! How you finding the suspension then is it nice and firm? Are you going to replace your rear interior quarter panels or leaving it as is?
love this car, has to be one of my favorites on the site, this and neils
:congrats:
Car looked mighty steve blasting past the pits heading upto Avon :happy2:
It's good, from the quick logging I have done there isn't much gain in the peak airflow but it feels better and seams to have less low down lag like the original ITG.
Also the enclosed filter will be better for intake temps too :happy2:
Cage looks proper :happy2:
Is it welded on footplates or custom fitted to the seatbelt mounts?
Steve are you round at kpm back end of next week at all, just like a look at your cage. What's the next track day your on? Don't fancy Bedford on 30th do you Or oulton park on 10th august?
Oulton sounds good MR PG

They're an absolute arse-ache.. Just do the rears. Trying to get a toll ticket through a slider isn't very dignified.
there cant be much more to do now steve? Whats the kerb weight now?
Is that welded up to stiffen the chassis? or to remove the wheel well?
Is that welded up to stiffen the chassis? or to remove the wheel well?
Both and to remove a bit more weight.
Thanks, the rear bumper (the diffuser is integrated) is my favourite as you don't see hardly any cars in the UK with this kit :happy2:
Alright Steve, dropped my car off with kev today and had a mosey at yours. Must say it is looking very good pal really liking the cage. What's the next track day you're on then?your Rocco is pretty devine yourself!!!! :notworthy:

Were gonna need the car for a bit longer, Tried to call earlier steve, were gonna have to take more of the chassis leg away than previously discussed, it's just that W12 lump is just too wide for the golf.
Have you got rid of the dash to save weight. :P
get your knob built up by the wheel while the interior is out.

looks great Steve, didn't realise it was set so low. Is there enough travel on the suspension to get the best from it when sitting so low?
It has settled quite a bit on the front so does need raising up a few mm's, however the performance of the car today was awesome so it certainly didn't impact anything being that low. I really can't praise Kev and Pie's at KPM enough, they have really helped me create a car far better than I thought a Mk5 could be :notworthy: :notworthy:
Apart from one off today (on the only section of the track with arnco :scared:) it was really showing up some far more serious machines :rolleye:
Both Top Cat and John_O did a few passenger laps with me today and seamed very impressed with how well the car performed too
Still flabbergasted how good this car was today :stupid: I never even knew that a front wheel drive car could be this good on track let a lone a Mk5. :notworthy:
Simply amazing. Dont know weather it was because of the slicks, but if it was, then they should be banned for cheating. Crazy all round ability. :congrats:
I would like to see a faster GTI round a circuit. :driver:

You will be able to add a bit of power now to give yourself a chance on track days. :rolleye:
bloody hell that plate is mullered!
did you source the SBC thru JBS???
mine slipped a bit again when the track was bone dry in the last sesh...and the damn clutch pedal was sticking again just like it did at Bedford and Combe.

A little more boost had been added to the settings on the Revo SPS+ ready for testing so should be driving at 7/10th when following bath tubs rather than 8/10ths :P :P
Don't worry I will be keeping up the progress with the mods too so should be able to stay one step ahead
Sounding good Steve lad!are the slicks taking a bit of getting use to then you could always send kev out to warm them up for you lol! I've got the slick experimenting to deal with yet, when's your next track day then? Is it feeling more balanced with your rear arb on the stiffest setting then?
and was restricting how quickly I could get on the power out of the corner

I thought that the whole reason Keith from APR doesn't frequent this place was his spat with Jonny nearly 3 years ago?
Did u put ur car on a Dyno in the end?? Remember you were looking for an honest one a while back!
^^^ Nope it's not a K04 engine in mine and for the initial part of Stage 3 there is no plan to do rods.

hi STeve,
I will follow this thread with interest as I might go the same route eventually.... Wonder how laggy this gt turbo is compared to K04??
Paul
That's true although steves is perfectly capable of handling the torque with his setup

Why handle it when you can have a nice progressive delivery with a change of turbo.
is apr's map uk based now ? when i was looking into maps it was only 91 ron fuel . i.e is no good over here . mine was done by ray west and he really knows his stuff , his maps are not cheap by any standards but are very good . and he has my map down there so might be worth ringing him . mine makes 340hp and is still on std rods !
So how comes you went back to VWR?

Are those Rotiforms?
Didn't realise that. Is the JKM RR full or do you think they could make an exception for you Steve?
Is that Keith @ KPM?

The southbend is awesome, took around 500 miles to fully bed in but feels great now :happy2:

What are the SMF's like for everyday use?

not any different to the DMF IMO, i have had one for a couple of years now and the wife has used it for daily, you're just certain it won't break like the DMF :happy2:

Hhhhmmm, interesting! I was told that with an SMF theres no biting point.... It's just on or off :surprised:
I use my car everyday and need something up to the part as I think my Sachs is starting to show signs of slip! Where can I get southbend set up from?
Try JBS, they are the UK importers :happy2:

OEM clutch on mine and waynes stage 2 plus cupras did the same, we figured it to be slave/master cylinder issues? Cant remember if it got resolved on waynes when he had all that stuff replaced. Really annoying when racing zondas and konigseggs on the m25 :indifferent:

Steve how's it work, is it automatic or can you vary it manually? If its automatic, will it not still be on full throttle ie full open giving full loudness on track when you are flooring it?
How's your back?
Love the pipework.
Oh dear. What's up with it Steve?
Bum.
Have faith, otherwise have a backup plan - you NEVER cancel a Ring trip!!
Let me know and I can put you in touch with Dale at Rent4Ring, you'll be on track by hook or by crook. :happy2:
Take the Polo :driver:
Oh dear. What's up with it Steve?
A few things, still ironing out mapping issues with Stage 3 and the one of the rear stocks appears to have sh*t itself.
you can park it next to me at the start line....

Can lend you the Clit for some shakedown, all 207 horses.........
Can supply it with R888's and some decent rain tyres............
It has even got a option of Seats for the larger racer................... Need notice to fit them.

I'm not getting in any clutter unless it is the imperious TTRS annihilator faster round a ring than Barrymore Meganne.
sssssshhhhhhhhhh!
Oh you boys. Get a room.
Not tempted to take the Polo GTI for a spin Steve?
Well it's been a bit of a roller coaster day again with the car :rolleye:
From collecting it from APR this morning, to seeing Greeners "off of" Detail My Ride transform the paintwork and then driving it after Keith from APR came up to DMR to reflash the car.
Initially the car was running like a bag of spanners to be honest and I was very much questioning the choice of the APR Stage 3 kit, a number of niggly running issues had been present since the kit was fitted that where detracting from the enjoyment of the extra power. So the car had been back to get these resolved, due to a number of factors and mainly a bit of a communication breakdown these where not resolved before I picked up the car.
After expressing my concerns to Keith he explained the situation and what they had done to put the running issues right in a revised file that needed to be flash onto the car. He offered to come out to me at Detail my Ride while the car was being sorted by Greeners.
Full pics of the end result of the detail to follow but here's a pic grabbed from DMR's Facebook
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2F418274_388834344460006_133515879991855_1603884_90890218_n.jpg&hash=f3ff18ca06ee6a596937881698594b9236b78107)
Leaving DMR I wasn't really sure what to expect with the revised file on the car, but immediately the car felt more normal / oem like and less on edge at low speed. After a bit more time in traffic all the previous niggles seemed to be gone and by the time I reach the nice quiet M45 I was a happy man once more. A quick blast down the M45 and a test run against Keith in his R showed the power was all there too :driver:
Back to Milton Keynes for some final data logging and which confirms everything is looking good fine with car, and there was still so headroom on the turbo, fuelling and timing.
Before these final niggles where resolved APR took the car to the dyno as well, the rolling road used was at Marlin in Bletchley, I had the car run here a few days after the recent trip to JKM and it recorded 367bhp (vs. the 349bhp at JKM), the figure reached at Marlin this week with revised calibration was a very healthy 408bhp
Looking forward to the Ring now
How tractable is it with road tyres on?
How tractable is it with road tyres on?
You can only data log in 4th as 3rd at FT overwhelms the front tyres, but the latest file has less of a torque spike so is surprisingly good :driver:
Yes still on stock internals, once it's back from the Ring it's going in for IE Rods
Then the extra boost, fuelling and timing that's available can be unleashed
^^^ Going for the drop in rods with the stock pistons :happy2:
Thanks for the info and offer Alex :happy2:
APR are supplying the parts already as part of an agreement I have to gradually get the car to Stage 4 spec (and before anyone comments I am paying for these upgrades :P)

Nope it happened on the road yesterday. I took the car out as I had a local meeting for work in Milton Keynes so I could fill up before the Bedford track I was due to attend today.
In 4th gear accelerating it started misfiring, then engine management light flashing and finally very loud metal on metal ticking noise that increased with the revs. I was five roundabouts away from APR so took it straight there, will find out next week what the damage is :scared:

Less power, more reliability - so what if some sh*tbox passes you? It isn't racing. Nobody is handing out medals. Honestly, don't get sucked into that game, that's for people with sponsors and bottomless pockets.
I'd ditch all notions of stage 47++, and stick in a K04'd lump with linear tune and be happy in the knowledge it'll do 100,000 miles with no drama.

I guess the downsides of a stroked TFSI is even more torque and less revability. I suppose neither of which you are aiming for unless you are.

It's an option I am considering but up to now I haven't felt the power was too much for a FWD car and love the way it handles at present
And where's the fun in that
And as of yesterday we have a GTX3071R up and running here in DK, only REVO stage 4 for now, stage 5 SW going in today along with a USP 044 low fuel pressure pump as it ran out of fuel at 1,5 bar.
Just thought you wanted to know Steve :innocent:

Should have taken more notice of this as you are correct Alex, these now appear to be TSI rods so your old employers had to step in and provide sell APR some correct IE rods (i believe tuscan spec) so the rebuild could continue :happy2:

I was there Tuesday, and there was a big gaping gap at the front of the car for some reason!! :innocent:
To be fair danGBs clutch failed, Povs transmission broke through driver error, so they're not code related, and steves bent some internals because he was running the higher output map designed for uprated internals which he knew would push the engine hence why he'd already ordered the uprated parts to fit.

Rather than cluttering up the TA thread I replied here.
Got it back on Wednesday night and have done the required break in miles now so I need to change the oil and it can then be tested properly, still got a few re-assembly issues to resolve along with a knacked battery that needs replacing :fighting:
It will then be getting some major changes to get back to where I want to be with the car with the aim of being ready for Inters :driver:

That's a point .... The correction isn't Din 70020 which is what most MAHA dynos use??
Looking at TFSI Mikes graph from Marlin dyno he had 276 at the wheels!
Just reading up on correction factors...SAE is American but seems to be as accurate if not more than Din 70020!
So for extra 18 HP at the wheels, you've got 41 more from drive train losses!
Something weird there
What do you reckon this modified head will net you then steve?
You going for a different valve train next then? Get her revving higher?

Its the next component that will be all the bits to make our new Stage 3+ product. Nothing terribly different in the head as far as the valve train or cams but opening up the front and the back gives us huge opportunities for timing advance and we expect 50+ bhp over where he is now.
Quick pic from tonight, finally reunited and both working for a change :pomppomp:

Sweet garage Mr. P.
I always liked looking in my Grg with my white mk2 next to the mk5. I should have kept my mk2 :sad1:
Fixed it for youPleas tow back to the APR graveyard. :signLOL:

What was wrong with it this time Steve? Noticed you had the coil packs / plugs out?
Shame u missed the dry track time in the afternoon when it was at its best.

A wheel came off Milltek's trailer at about 60 mph. I saw the result - Studs sheared right off! :scared:

Not many photo's from last weekend and another running issue meant I only got wet track time but here's couple: -
The future of my track day transport, trailering FTW

Will give you a call in the week Mr P. Now I am sorted in my next job.

I'm surprised we didn't get a totally irrelevant photo too :signLOL:
....I'll happily post one for you if you like, bud. But I did answer SteveP's comment which you chose to omit from the quote.
All you're doing is extending the irrelevance but I guess that's already been done with all the chat about stuffing faces with food.

Yep it's got nothing to do with my thread about my car. Millteks trailer issue occurred towing an exhibition trailer not a car trailer :stupid:
....Okay, then I apologise if I was misinformed or got it wrong. However, you could be a bit more gracious than posting " :stupid: " icons, particularly as you singled me out and weren't bothered by other off-topic posts on your build thread. You have a very fine car and I wish you joy with it.
You'll doubtless be pleased to hear that I won't bother to post anything more on your build thread whatsoever and I'll greatly reduce my posting on this forum generally.
:signLOL: ... i thought they ported heads with a dremel!!!
.
Isn't this car begging for a Lobo turbo?
That's a good alternative to 5 axis CNC machines costing a million quid, with you TC......how does it know
With these facilities I'd have thought upping the valve sizes might have been upped a little bit, that said somebody's no doubt done the maths to see if it paid off.
Remember the Jaguar le man cars in the late eighties and nineties were only 2 valves per cylinder, the additional weight and complexity didn't warrant the extra 30BHP the 4v heads made.
Easy to get into diminishing returns quickly I guess, trick is to spend the money wisely for the best gains
Looking good Steve
Any plans for the turbo to be reworked to a HTA or GTX?
I could watch those machines working all day long. :pomppomp:
Does the engine need running in again with the head work. :happy2:
Any plans for the turbo to be reworked to a HTA or GTX?
A GTX turbo is a possible next step to get the quicker spool up the GT28 I currently have is lacking.
Currently its coming on boost properly at 3600-3700 so it's still possible to drop to lower ranges on track and get a bit of lag. APR has a theory on using a smaller GTX2860
This is an awesome build. The porting and polishing would normally make the power peaky but I see that the standard valves are being used so that shouldnt be a problem. Porting and polishing doesnt give big gains in turbo applications like it does with normally aspirated engines but every little helps. :happy2:

APR believe the opposite, but all will be revealed tonight
Keith is hoping for around a 50 bhp gain from the head and re-calibration.
If it makes that much is will send my head off straight away.
is it similar gains across the rev range or is it mainly peak power gain?
Sounds awesome so far
Whats the latest then Steve :popcornsoda: :popcornsoda:
Out of interest what weight is your Golf in trackday trim?
Whats the latest then Steve :popcornsoda: :popcornsoda:
All up and running, can't get mine to run normal temps on the APR dyno so the ECU is pulling back the power. The temps are hitting near 60c on the dyno vs. the normal 34c on the road.
Also now have switchable maps on the cruise control which is awesome, so I have 3 programs.
1= ECO
2 = Street / Race Course Map
3 = Drag / Full Power
Here's one of the graphs from the 2 program: -

Just going by the numbers it's not massive gains for sure, but out of the road it feels and sounds very different with the head work completed.
Joel is over from the States again so a bit more tweaking will be done this week so final results will follow shortly.
Basically the only differences between mine and Dan's now is the Water Meth, APR vs. THS IC and BWA vs AXX bottom end.Out of interest what weight is your Golf in trackday trim?
Last time it was weighed before the Air Con was removed it was 1290 with a full tank of fuel.
Race? :popcornsoda:
Pah, I'd not keep up :sad1:
Thats criminal  unless your going to build a race car.....but then it practically was before so....do go on
The end......
