Title: MFSW Parts missing? - Retrofitting MFSW Buttons
Post by: bodger00 on May 28, 2011, 06:37:50 pm
This afternoon I decided to try and fit my MFSW buttons. Taking all precautions I removed the airbag but I did not see what I had hoped. I understood it was a case of carefully removing the airbag and then simply plugging them in......not so, it seems

My car is an 06 manual and it seems like although I have both buttons and some sort of controller?? There doesn't appear to be a cable that connects them to the car?

This is what I have (buttons came from an 07 car):

What am I missing?

Cheers

Pretty sure you're missing the airbag wiring loom for MFSW.

Thanks Stu. I guessed it was something like that. So does this connect from the controller module (show in my first picture) to a point on the airbag?

I am not sure how this all fits together?? Will any coding be required?

I thought the only way you could get buttons to retrofit like this was on a DSG wheel, given that it has everything in place?

If you have a wheel, the only solution appears to be a new wheel with the buttons already fitted.

Thanks given Stu. So if I understand this right I need a MFSW Airbag Loom part no = 1K0 971 584 C and I may need a new steering wheel control module ??

I have midline clocks but I thought all GTI's had highline steering wheel modules? :rolleye:

Supposing I don't need a new steering wheel module, I guess its a case of airbag off......fit buttons and new loom and then refit without any coding?

Thanks for your help.

Stealth - I can't see any sockets to screw in the buttons on my wheel

I'd get the loom and fit it all up and see if it works before you go hunting for a Steering Controller.

You do need to screw the buttons to the wheel.

So it's actually possible to retrofit MFSW on a manual steering wheel?

I saw this on another thread which must have thrown me off track as this is a DSG wheel:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FStevep_010%2FOSIR%2FIMG_2660.jpg&hash=27e7e447f3662e1ec9014545d90d6466036c4d43)

You do need to screw the buttons to the wheel.

Great  :happy2: so I guess you can just clip them in.

Can anyone confirm what Stealth is saying? I would hate to think I am wasting my time with this wheel. There does not seem to be a place to clip in the thing I keep calling a controller?

The DSG wheel has blank covers which come off and can be swapped with MFSW buttons.

I've been led to believe (by this forum!) that it cannot be done with a manual steering wheel.

stealth is right, unlike the VRS where I can see you had buttons just non functional.  In the Golf you cannot replace the black plastic blanks on the manual wheels as they are solid plastic.  if you get a wheel that has the cutt outs you will also need the airbag loom as stu has led you to believe.

stealth is right
Without offense to bodger, thank God for that! Honestly was starting to think I could have had MFSW all these years!  :stupid:

Cheers Rich.....I think that clears it up then.....unfortunately this is a PITA for me :sad1:

So I guess these buttons and controller are now for sale then if anyone wants them.....

It is a right pain Bodger, and I see no reason for them producing two different base wheels!  :fighting:

But surely the reason is the DSG steering wheel has slots for the paddles?

But agree - wish mfsw didn't mean a new wheel for us manual drivers!

yeah but surely produce one with two blanks and then adapt as required! but that obviously affects your optional extra resell revenue if companies offer cheap retrofits.

Thanks Rich and others for the advice :congrats:. On the positive side I have sold them to someone who can make better use of them.

Must resist the temptation of the MK6 Gti wheel. And the potential hastle of working out what I need :rolleye:

^^^^Bodger all you need is a CH steering controller and your away.

I'm pretty sue you'll already have a type 2 slip ring..potential hassle over  :happy2:
