Title: I know its not a golf, but..........
Post by: T88OMM on March 13, 2009, 10:11:45 am
I thought it was about time I got some pics up of the new chariot. My last car (the reason I am member on here) many of you will know and have seen before. My much loved ED30, had the full stage 2+ treatment (full TBE, Autotech HPFP, Milltek TBE, Carbonio, Custom Code Stage 2+ map) The car was running around 330BHP, it was a monster  I decided to sell earlier this year for a number of reasons, but the main being the amount I was spending on fuel. £120 a week in loopy juice was really hurting my pocket, she had to go and a diesel was on the cards. Looking at it now I could have kept her, a change of job etc. helped the situation I was in a lot, but hey ho. Next year will bring something special to the garage  Here is a pic of her  :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll213%2FT88OMM%2F19052008006-1-2.jpg&hash=1b59aba23c885644d813ff5e7a17c2ede8d6e93f)

The car was eventually sold (after 6 months of advertisement) to a member of the forum dan.payne. He is taking good care of her, I see it from time to time which does not do anything for my pocket. Every time I see it I want another

So what to get next. I had looked at various cars, Golf MKV diesel's, BMW 320d coupe's and A3 S Line's etc. I ruled the golf out as I had already had three and the Beemer was just too boring . I went to look at a few A3's and was really starting to like them. However every one that I went to look turned out to be dogs, it was starting to get tireless.

Then I came up on a red A3 S-Line Quattro on Pistonheads. It was fully loaded, Xenons, full leather, Bose sound system, just about every option on the list had been ticked bar sat nav. I went to look at the car in Wolverhampton and it turned out to be mint. After mulling over it on the way back I decided I would take my time and see if anything else came up. I got back home and had another look on Pistonheads and came across a grey one of almost identical spec, that was in Bolton a lot closer to home. So the next day I went to look at that one, what a dog that turned out to be! I decided that the red one was the way to go, it really was in top condition. I immediately called the garage and did the deal over the phone  :jumpmove: Two days later me and Jay (JPC) were on the way to Wolverhampton pick her up. All the paperwork was sorted out and we were on the way back home in no time. I immediately knew I had made the right decision, it really was a lovely car to drive. Everything felt very solid and grown up. I was not so sure on the red but it started to grow on me quickly. This is a pic of an identical car when I got it (can't find any standard pics of mine)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.motors.co.uk%2Fd%2Fused-photos%2Fhuge%2FN%2FJ%2FNJ57YZZ.jpg&hash=e1006f4a17dd80a2375a4db5d8c79e3d8d3c594d)

I originally planned just to put a new set of wheels on but as always with me I can't leave anything alone. After scouring audisport.net I cam across a nice shiny set of 19' BBS Ch's. I got on the blower and in no time I was on the way up to Hull to pick a new set of wheels up  :jumpmove: This is a pic of them of how they were:

I got them on the car but soon realised I wanted them refurbed and painted in black or anthracite. I was gonna go with a black and red them with the car, I think the two colours go really well together. After a quick chat with Gerry at WRC Wheel Repairs a finish was decided. Gloss black centres with a polished machined lip. Here is how they came out:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi289.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fll213%2FT88OMM%2FIMG_0032.jpg&hash=a72506151de9cd224684d8323770919ca9ee50bb)

I wanted to adress the front of the car next as I thought it looked a bit bland, I wanted to toughen it up a bit. Here is how it did look:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.motordepot.co.uk%2Fcarimages%2Fimage.aspx%3Fimageid%3D18620%26amp%3Bregistration%3DRK07PLZ%26amp%3Bsize%3D62&hash=1b51db18f7089770460c25e011cc5ff2990fa8a3)

After trawling the internet looking at various options I decided on a Black Optics grill, Cupra R splitter and some Lamin-X to darken the headlights and fog lights. After all was purchased Friday afternoon came and it was time to get it all fitted at Jay's unit. Jay was detailing gazbutmk5gti's car at the time so Gaz was there to help. He preety much ended doing all the work as he soon found out I was useless with a spanner. He was better left alone doing the work, I was demoted to tea boy  Here is how it came out

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll213%2FT88OMM%2FIMG_0031.jpg&hash=82bfeffcf372a2094a0949bced07b02d1cd23401)

Next up was the rear lights, the 2009 A3 rear lights had been changed a little and I decided I wanted some. Here is a pic with the new ones on:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll213%2FT88OMM%2FIMG_0034.jpg&hash=e6938fc10282cb40d73a3d9bff9f66c22430f2ea)

That is preety much it for now, the car is going in to Awesome in Manchester for some coilovers a week today, gonna get it as low as I possibly can  After that S3 side skirts and rear diffuser are going on along with a custom exhaust system. I will post pics in due course. Here are a couple of pics of the car how it currently looks now  :happy2:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll213%2FT88OMM%2FIMG_0033.jpg&hash=843dadaacedc11f88e232a223cb4d3c5980cd6f1)

I know the photos are useless but the only camera I own is on my phone. Please let me know your honest opinions and any ideas that you may have that will spruce it up a bit.

Thanks, Tom  :happy2:

Lovely looking car, I love the black optics kit - but have you see how much it costs on the options list at Audi?! I really like the A3, if don't end up with a GTi, it may well be an S-tronic 2.0T A3.

Does the Lamin-X not adversely effect the performance of the headlights? They look really dark.

i think it takes about 10% of the brightness (from what i remember), so not much really.

I had Gazbut behind me on the M6 last weekend and he has this mod, and they still looked very bright, he does have xenon's though i cant say what they would look like like on standard lights. I was surprised at how bright they looked, when i had a blimp in the service station they did look dark up close.

That is a really nice looking car Tom, with some really nice mods, esp the black grille and shorter plate holder.

Looks very nice. I thought replacing the chrome bit of grille with a black one would look nasty but it's come out well.

Looks a bit orange though. Is that what it really looks like or just the camera?

Ive been thinking about getting an A3, and the black grille would be the first mod i'd do tbh.  :happy2:

No its the camera. I am gonna get some proper pics up next week when it has got the coilies on and it has been washed  :happy2:

It does make them a bit dimmer but hardly any difference. Mind you I have xenons like Gaz which are bright as hell anyway. I have not seen how they affect standard halogens  :happy2:

Thanks for all the comments guys. I really was not sure about the wheels at first TBH,but they really have grown on me quickly. When the car has been slammed I think it will make a HUGE difference. I have been shopping again today, the misses don't know yet  I have picked up a bonnet bra and the mirror shells are going into the bodyshop to be finished in gloss black  :rolleye:

These pictures do not do the car any justice at all, it looks miles better in the flesh  :happy2:

I like the front splitter the way it is Joe. I think it breaks up the front end a bit, I think it would look too orange red if it was colour coded. I am counting down the days till friday now, I honestly cannot wait to be dropped on its arse, it looks plain wrong at the moment. This springs to mind

Quick Update

I dropped the mirrors and rear Audi badge off at the bodyshop yesterday to be resprayed in gloss black and I also ordered a bonnet bra for some of the lengthy drives to shows this season.

I am gonna go and get some spacers for the rear wheels from Venom Motorsport on Friday afternoon after it has been slammed, the rear wheels are looking look a little bit lost in the arches  :surprised:

Everything is starting to come together now for GTI Spring Festival, unfortunately the S3 side skirts and rear diffuser won't be on for then, they will have to wait till next month  :happy2:

I also really fancy getting the lower part of the S3 diffuser (pictured in grey below) wrapped in matt or carbon vinyl.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.caradvice.com.au%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2007%2F06%2F2007audis3rear.jpg&hash=5777ccf92a66e89d0ad490b416642ae99125888a)

I don't know if anybody is in the know on wrapping but would this be possible on the S3 rear diffuser, it looks like it could be quite a tough job, there are lots of bumps and funny angles in it  :surprised: Also does anyone know where I could get this done. I live in the North-West, I have heard people talking about someone who does it in Leeds??  :happy2:

Friday mate, it was suppost to be the friday just gone but they did not arrive in time   It is crying out for a slam, the gap between the arches and the tires at the moment is ridiculous    They will be on in time for sunday  :jumpmove:

Managed to get some spacers ordered for the rear wheels, they are sitting a little too far back in the arch for my liking at the moment. I also deleted the rear wiper yesterday which has cleaned up the rear end  :happy2: All is coming together for the Pod

Tom, can you get a pick of a side rear end shot of an S3 and yours, because it looks like its missing something??, maybe roof spoiler is smaller? i know the Back bumper is a completly different shape to the S3. Seems somethings missing or it looks too Rounded??.
Maybe tint the rear clusters to match the front. Nice mods so far though Tom :happy2:

Tom, can you get a pick of a side rear end shot of an S3 and yours, because it looks like its missing something??, maybe roof spoiler is smaller or Back bumper is a completly different shape to the S3?. Seems somethings missing or maybe tint the rear clusters to match the front. Nice mods so far mate :happy2:

The only difference between the S3 rear and mine is the very bottom part of the bumper. The S3 has a little diffuser and mine doesn't, but apart from that everything is the same. All the rear badges have been taken off mine which certainly makes a difference visually, the four ring Audi badge is going back on this week, I took it off as I am getting it resprayed gloss black  :happy2:

Very nice!  You've done a good job!

I very almost bought the same model as I was tired of wasting my time looking at shagged GTIs.

I found what seemed to be the perfect one, Garnet Red (was an Audi Exclusive paint job on that car), fully loaded and only £9995.  I got half way there and the dealer called me to say someone had put a deposit on it...gutted!

Thanks matey  :happy2:

They are a good car it was just hard for me getting used to the power coming from a 330 BHP Edition 30. I nearly chopped it this week and got another GTI, my mate is nagging me to sell it but I decided to stick with it. I have spent a lot on it already and it would be stupid to sell it after only two months ownership. You don't see a lot of modded A3's which was a factor in my decision to keep it aswell  :happy2:

Ok, a lot has been happening this week with the car  :jumpmove:

I dropped it off on Tuesday morning with Jay (JPC) for a full paint correction. It turned out to be a bitch, there was swirls and marring all over the car  and the paint turned out to be rock hard. Jay said it was the hardest detail he has ever done  After over 24 hours of work on the car he got it spot on, what a turnaround   Here are a few pics of him in action, a full write up in the detailing section will follow in the near future  :happy2:

I picked up late last night and then it was straight down to Awesome in Manchester this morning to have the AP coilovers fitted. You can see in the other pics in the thread how badly it needed a drop  :surprised:

I am well happy with them, they have made such a difference. I have not had that much chance to drive it yet but the ride does not feel any different  :happy2:  and it feels like there is a lot less roll when pushing hard around a corner

I have got a few other bits to do tomorrow and then I will be ready for the Pod on Sunday. Let me know what you think guys

Looks bang on :happy2:  Saw your car at Awesome today before the drop, it certainly makes a big differance.  Would have had a chat but was in a bit of a rush.  Did you eat the twix in the end?  I saw you think about it then put it in you pocket.

Yeah I know, it has made a huge difference. I think that was a case of mistaken identity, I dropped it off at 8:30 and picked it up at 5:30. It must have been someone else  :happy2:

Thanks for all the comments guys  :happy2:

I took the misses out last night, so being all excited about the coilies we went in my car. What a difference they have made

The car drives completely different. It is quattro all ready so it did not handle too bad without the coilies but now....its like it is on rails. It really is crazy how fast you can take some corners and the thing does not twitch at all  :jumpmove:

The ride feels exactly the same as before, I was expecting some spine shattering moments when hitting a few potholes last night but the coilies took them all in their stride  :happy2:

I cannot recommend the AP's enough. I am told that they are exactly the same as the FK Highsport coilover they have just been rebadged. The FK's are £470  :surprised:.  I know there may be many doubters because of the price of them but they really are great. Off to go and play some more now  :driver:

the car looks mile better now with the coilys.

and with regards to the detail, yep...it was a tough one. my brief was 100% job, which with hindsight, wasnt going to be possible. the car has had a lot of paint work, and the bonnet had been painted with the wings being blown in. meaning there was some marks under the top clear coat.

theres nothing i could have done about that, which is a shame, but from what the car was like, im confident it was still a huge turn around! ;)

sneaky peak at the state of it
