I have had the Forge twintercooler fitted to a Revo stage 2 engine (TBE, filer, ForgeDV).
So far I have not noticed any significant in power (Possibly some at the top end). But it does feel as though the map is not as clean and without the twintercooler.
I am going to speak to Revo to see how long the ECU learning will take to adjust the map. I also wonder if I might be running out of fuel pump range as it feels a little flat and not quite hesitant but less sharp when accelerating, a slight feeling of holding back when accelerating.
Any thoughts
-
I have spoken to Revo and they suggest leave it for 1-2 weeks as the adaptation can take as long as 24 hours of driving.
I hope this won't go in the classifieds as I do not want to go to Stage 2+
-
By adding another IC your asking the turbo to pressurise a larger volume of air, thats probably the reason it feels less sharp.
Also, by adding a twintercooler it won't necessarily give you more power on the same map.
-
I did a bit of reading and the response should be better, as the pressure drop is reduced. Plenums and turbo's behave differently than NA engines.
Most reports say the car feels crisper and sharper, I might try different map settings, I am on 6,5,9 at the moment
-
A shame you're not there tonight, you could have disconnected the battery, had some food, then driven home to adapt.
-
DomT,
Yes real shame I can't make it :sad1:
It would have been good to see more than two other cars inthe car park in good weather too !
Happy birthday by the way :happy2:

I have decided to get the twintercooler taken off the car. This will be a very expensive excercise as it's a 2+ hour job, so 4-5 hours.
To be honest I am going to go back to Stage 2 without the twintercooler, I have decied to look at replacing the Golf in 6-12 months, and I don't want to keep throwing money at it. The engine mount experience and getting the car to handle has been too frustrating.
I will put in the classifieds when I have had this done. It will be only a week or two on the car.........
-
Before jumping ship, look at your original IC hoses. Are the rubber O rings sill on the couplers as they need to be transfered over to the forge couplers otherwise you'll be losing boost.

i am not convinced about the merits of fitting a twintercooler and several tuners have exprssed this view.
shame you thinking of getting rid already when you were "enjoying" experimenting with the geometry so much!

Oh dear, I'm still waiting for my Twintercooler to arrive, I wanted a black finish to it, (as I don't do silver and shiny) and already people are getting mixed results. And one is already heading for a removal.
@ Carrera2RS this is fitted onto your Pirelli isn't it? So same result will apply to my Ed30 then..
Do seem to remember the Forge lads saying to me (at the blazing hot Inters Sunday last year) this item did give some slight power gains, but guess there are a number of factors at play. Level of tune run etc.
That said I suppose 15bhp on top of 320 odd may not be much of a noticeable hike, but who can tell.
Being a bit naive and definitely not technical - I didn't really think a 'Twinter' would give a big slug of extra power merely I considered it would allow the engine to run cooler and hopefully not stress it too much but that may just be in my head. Either way sorry to hear you had a non expected result when it went on.
-
The twintercooler does not give you lots of extra power, but what it does is allow you to run more timing without getting knock thus making it run safer. Not every modification is going to make grin from ear to ear, but once you have added a few they all start working in harmony
-
1. An uprated intercooler wont add power.
2. You will be able to add more power with the map adjusted to suit.
3. Typically you can run 1-2 higher timing settings on revo with a twintercooler over stock.
4. Boost 6 is very low, I get best results with boost at 8-9 and timing 5-6, some will take timing if 7.
-
I don't doubt the twintercooler reduces inlet temperature and adds HP as part of a package.
I don't want extra hp I was hoping that without remapping it would be marginally crisper and lose the fluffy soft performance when the sun is pumping out.
I have real problems with wheel hop and the THS mount reminds me of driving a deisel truck so I will live with the hop and moderate throttle in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
It was quick enough for the chassis IMO with stage 2, I did as much reading as I could and hoped it would add a little to the good package. It hasn't yet, I could remap and I'm sure end up improving and adding power, revo said I could run 7 on timing with the twintercooler. BUT I am simply not prepared to continue throwing money at the car. I have spent over £500 on suspension set ups.......
What if the car is quicker but not as crisp as it was in simple stage 2 ? I am not prepared to take the risk. It's going back to stage 2 without twintercooler and bottom mount by th end of the month. I will fit VWR brakes as the stock are inadequate IMO.
Then the car will owe me £22k all in, thats enough. I still hanker after incar sat nav, Bluetooth phone integration, and RWD...... In 12-18m time I think I will be in a 1M
I have had time to think and assess. At stage 2 with the final settings for suspension the car was good, that'll do me. In the last 10 years I have only done over 200k miles in a Porsche C2RS, BMW E30 M3, E46 M3, E92 M3, E39 M5, most were lightly modified with brakes and suspension.
I am not being very fair with my expectations
-
Well the story so far...
I had the engine checked and replaced 4 coils and plugs, better but still a little 'fluffy' at certain rpm. I took the car to Revoand they checked everything. All okay, we experimented with boost. At boost 8 from 6 it ran much better, but for me this was too marginal for tracktion. The car was very quick but a little too aggressive for me.
I want to moderate throttle occasionally not frequently, so I had it put back to 6,5,9. With a reset it has been better still, but somehow it is not as sweet as before. I think the twintercooler works much better with higher boost than I want to run. I was 297 hp before a trip to Revo and it is much better now at the top end. But it has not added anything to the drive, so I have decided to takenit off and go back to stage 2 with just exhaust, air filter and DV. I wonder if I was marginal on the fuel pump settings.
It will be coming off on the 4th and in the classifieds. I have decided not to move to stage 2+ as I think the chassis will need an LSD to put the power down. An LSD, pump, inlet etc will set me back another £2.5k and I am about to rebuild my horn speakers and upgrade my turntable, consider a new projector for film in another room and I keep getting drawn into looking at streaming with Linn and a deal on a Klimax renew DS.....
My golf was to help me save money, VWR brakes go on next week too !
-
Nice one on the brakes you will enjoy them but if it was me I would get the diff done first but you will be happy which ever you have done first
-
I have taken the twintercooler off, why ?
Well I found the mapping for stage 2 better with no additional cooler, it does not feel quite as strong in the mid with it removed but a little crisper. I also did not want to move to Stage 2+ as I am just fitting VWR front brakes and I feel 300-315 hp is enough.
I suspect the twintercooler works best with more boost and a higher stage of tune, I was going to fit a THS but, there seemed no point unless you want to go beyond stage 2. My exhaust gas temps do not warrant an additional cooler.
It will be in the adds with pictures tonight :happy2:
-
Its intake temps the cooler helps with, not exhaust gas temps.
-
Your probably right
-
Your probably right
not probably, definitely. The cooler lowers inlet air temps
-
I am well aware that this lowers intake temp, it is the point of an intercooler !
This will reduce initial combustion temp and hence reduce the likelihood of knock, I can see why EGT's might be lower on the same boost, timing settings. Unless ofcourse the final combustion temp is not materially different.

Colio, that's the only reasoi posted as you seemed a little confused :happy2:
-
I might have got confused as it seemed that high EG temps were an issue on highly tuned cars and I think I read that additional intercooling helped.
I do think I might be a little down on midrange HP going back to no twintercooler, but the Stage 2 Revo map does seem to be crisper overall with the stock intercooler and it revs more cleanly past 6,000 as well.
My current settings are modest at 6,5,9 but I like it !
