Title: Nightmare!!!
Post by: duncan on March 14, 2009, 01:21:08 pm
have recently posted in the new members section - just bought a 2006 candy white GTI with WALD conversion

well.... picked it up on monday and have probably done about 600-700 miles in it.

today tried to start it - the engine turned over but didnt spark... is under warranty so phoned vw and they sent roadside assistence over.

wasnt fixed at the road side -

he recons the problem is the ignition coil which has melted the cables joining it (not sure if that makes sense or not)

to be fair though VW were good - the call out only took 20mins, already have the courtesy car sorted.

my local VW garage says that they should have an answer on monday so fingers crossed til then!

anyone else hand any similar problems on their GTI?

is it anything to worry about after its fixed?

yep have had it confirmed that the car is 100% covered by the warranty!

so others have had this same problem? is it a reasonably easy fix?

would be great if i get the car back soon - dont have a bad replacement - is a TDI but is certainly no GTI

It is common on some GTI's....

But instead of no spark the car usually bursts into flames....  :happy2:

You got off lucky

NONE

ALL

Ok, shall we settle on 'it has happened a few times that we are aware of'?  :signLOL:

so is it an easy fix? once the problem has been sorted could it happen again?

what causes the ignition coil to just go like that?

whats a WALD  conversion ?????????

its a VW approved remap basicly that happens before the car is imported into the uk, it still keeps the full VW warranty.

is basically just a remap upto 245bhp

back to the ignition problem - is this a big job to fix? will i experience problems in the future with this remap?

what could be causing it?

Hello

Its not a major issue.

Just a few pointers:

1. I have no idea why the coil has gone. Is it not a coil pack? If its not a coil pack then I apologise as I seemed to have read it as a coilpack that had melted....

2. The remap does not cause the issue. The parts that are damaged have nothing to do with the remap. We have GTi's here running much more ferocious maps and they have had no problem. To clarify. The remap is not physical. Nothing changes on the car itself. All a remap does is change the settings in the cars Engine control unit or ECU. These slight changes in settings produce more power etc.

Dont fret too much about it. VW are fixing the problem for free and this is the first time I have ever heard about this. Maybe give your post a day or two and some of the "experts" can comment.

im not sure if it is the coil pack - he just said the ignition coil has gone and has burn the cables connecting to it

not 100% if that makes any sense

if that is the case - is this just something random that can happen or is there an underlying cause?

just wierd that it was running perfectly for 5 days of long driving then suddenly go to start it and nothing....

I think its just a random thing that happened. Bad luck maybe?

If it keeps happening then be worried but maybe a fuse blew and it shorted something or maye the car just felt like being mean to you?

We had a similar situation with our car but it was tracked down to the radio hat was chomping the battery while the car was off It was a fuse that was playing up. New fuse and life went on. Its just a freak occurence.

Dont pull your hair out about it.
