Im Looking to upgrade from the rcd300 as its ugly and reminds me of being at work in my caddy!! Its also doesn't sound that great so i have a couple of questions.

I don't want to spent an absolute fortune and would prefer to stay oem. I already have a 6 disk changer in armrest so don't require 6 disk dash mounted. I also don't have a real need for sat nav and would prefer to avoid it due to cost.

Whats my best option?

Do the fancier oem such as the RCD510 sound any better without changing speakers?

The newer units such as an RCD510 and RNS510 have a 'loudness' function therefore improving the sound quality ten fold.
