iCloud is integrated into every iOS5 device and will launch in Fall (Sep-Nov) along with iOS5 (and the iPhone 5 no doubt)

Oh and it's completely free :surprised:

Lot's of great new stuff in Lion (been running it for a while under Apple Beta) - good to see that people will not get hammered for upgrade too ($29) for licensed machines owned.

I like the idea to upgrade all of your own tracks to better quality, albeit for a fee.  At least it's DRM free.

Information about the MobileMe transition

Last Modified: June 06, 2011
Article: HT4597

Summary

What's happening to MobileMe?
Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.

Products Affected

MobileMe
What will happen to the content I have on MobileMe?
Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address and move your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.

When iCloud becomes available this fall, more details and instructions will be provided on how to make the move.

Can I create a new MobileMe account?
You can no longer create a new 60-day trial account or start a new subscription using a code contained in a MobileMe box. However, if you have a Family Pack subscription, you can still create new family member accounts.

Can I upgrade to a Family Pack or purchase additional storage?
Effective June 6, 2011, you can no longer upgrade your Individual account to a Family Pack or purchase additional storage for your MobileMe account.

I purchased a MobileMe box and have not used the activation code inside. Can I get refund for it?
Yes. If you have an unused activation code from a MobileMe box, you can submit a refund request.

Bit frustrated that the gigabytes and gigabytes of photos i painstakingly uploaded to MobileMe might not longer be available. Keen to see what happens to uploaded Photos, once account is migrated to iCloud, as that part is not really explained.

Yet again Apple have taken the ideas from the jailbreakers and included tem into IOS i.e. notifications and volume button for the camera

Android uers and Google alredy sync email, calendars and docs from the cloud

How much did Apple have to pay the music companies for music in the iClos and only 250000 tracks allowed :(
Title: Re: Apple WWDC 2011
Post by: vRS Carl on June 07, 2011, 06:30:18 am
Apple already sync's Email, Calendars and Contacts in the Cloud via MobileMe.

250000 is a lot of music

Whilst I am quite disappointed that we didn't get a new MacBook air this time, I am quite excited on the move to cloud storage, in as far as music is concerned it may just well be a game changer. I use last fm all the time now I even pay a subscription it's that good. All that and coupled with AirPlay to a sonos starter kit and I will be one happy chappie.

Looking forward to this as well.

At the moment I have a NAS with all my DivX movies on. I use my PS3 to stream the movies down so I can watch them through the main living room TV.

I use the 'AirPlayer' app on my iPhone and iPad to stream any music/movies/photos through them as well, as I dont want to have to convert everything to mp4 to stick into iTunes.

Im actually looking to order an Apple TV2 in the next day or so (have some Play.com vouchers from my credit card  ), and then selling my iPad for an iPad 2 so that I can wirelessly mirror everything across to the Apple TV - hence sell off my PS3, which is otherwise wasted!!
Title: Re: Apple WWDC 2011
Post by: neg on June 09, 2011, 11:22:26 am
I am tempted to get an AppleTV2 again now just for this feature

I'll take a look at AirPlay - tried MediaConnect and FusionStream but they have some issues with mpg format.

Funny how new software etc makes you want to upgrade!!

I have a MacBook Pro (2010), which Ive stuck a 240GB SSD and 8GB RAM into - so Im happy with that. Just waiting for Lion next month!!
iPhone 4 32GB - my contract with O2 has just finsihed, so may upgrade to the new one when its out....
iPad 1 32GB - very tempted to upgrade to iPad 2 for the wireless mirroring features etc.
Apple Extreme Router - best router Ive ever had!
Apple TV2 - just ordered this for the airplay features, and becaus eof the mirroring possibilities soon!!

Saying that I may ditch the 32GB devices for 16GB from now on. I stream all of my content from my NAS, so dont really need the extra storage space!!

Come on iOS5!!!!!

....I thought about the i7 version but don't need that extent of power.

27 inch (silly not to!)
2.7 GHz
8 Gig Ram
1 TB HD
Magic Trackpad
AppleCare 3-year warranty

Pulling the trigger next week all being well. The current iMacs are almost pro power, obviously depending on what you use your Mac for.

I need to upgrade Logic and some other software too.

Will it be your first iMac, Jay?

Robin, I wouldn't spend the extra on the ram from apple. You can get it far cheaper and it doesn't affect your warranty

I'm going for

27 inch
3.4 i7 (thinking if i go big it might take me 3-4-5 years to outgrow it)
2gb grahpics card
2tb hard drive
Magic mouse with numeric keyboard
4th ram then upgrade afterwards
3 years apple care

Jay,

The new iMacs are not easy to upgrade the ram in and it involves removing the screen.

I would pay for the RAM from Apple as it does now Void your warranty if you do it yourself. Even the majority of Authorised resellers are not allowed to do it.

Here is an Example of what you need to do to get at the HDD and RAM. It's on a 21.5" iMac but the process is the same for the 27"

Mind if I join the Apple love-in, guys?

My current Windows laptop is now over four years old and is slower than a Citroen 2CV. I quite fancy an iMac and noticed on the Apple UK store site that they sell refurbished models at fairly reasonable prices. Is there any reason for me to avoid one??

Cheers.

....No reason to avoid one as such - They should come with warranty. You just need to think about what you're using it for. Questions like whether it will run the software you want to use. For example, a PowerMac processor won't run the latest operating system nor Adobe Creative Suite. Try and get a Mac with an Intel processor to be more future proof.

Robin, I wouldn't spend the extra on the ram from apple. You can get it far cheaper and it doesn't affect your warranty

I'm going for

27 inch
3.4 i7 (thinking if i go big it might take me 3-4-5 years to outgrow it)
2gb grahpics card
2tb hard drive
Magic mouse with numeric keyboard
4th ram then upgrade afterwards
3 years apple care

Jay and Robin, it might look expensive, but I'd seriously consider specifying an SSD drive over a faster processor, even if it means going for the entry level i5 chip. The OS and your applications will be installed on the SSD, and your serial drive is used purely for storage. I bought six iMacs for the studio in March, and Apple (amongst others) advised this was the most significant way to increase the machines performance in everyday use.

As Robin says, iMacs are so powerful these days that even an entry level machine will be more than sufficient for most people, for a long time.

....So, rather than go for a 2TB HD, you're suggesting that a 1TB HD plus the 256 GB SSD option would be better?

I'd say so yes. That's the option I went for when I last ordered machines for work, and Apple advised me accordingly.
