Title: Changing Gearknob & Ashtray trim...
Post by: steverobb1973 on June 07, 2011, 10:45:24 am
I's sure its really easy to do but as I dont want to stick screwdriver in places I shouldnt and risk damaging trim.... Could someone please tell me the best way to remove a gearknob and gaitor (compleet with plastic trim) - assume re-fitting is reversal.

Also I want to remove the ashtray trim and replace with a storage tray - again can someone please advise easiest way to remove this part.

Many thanks in advance.

Steve

Hi Steve
pull the bottom of the gearknob trim up and then you will see this-(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo45%2Fscotty-boy_2006%2FP1020999.jpg&hash=5a777153f29ec506e4386c8838b2dc00a6ace7b7)
you need to open up the clamp and then pull the gearknob up and off, then look down at the ashtray and you will see 2 screws just undo them and unplug the 12v socket and any other buttons you have installed, and then put back in your new bits :happy2:

Yes much more useful than the ashtray......I am getting a Parrot handsfree kit installed next week and going to get the ipod connector lead routed in there too....

How do you go about just removing the ashtray, are the 2 screws that hold it down under the gearknob? If so then do DSG covers come off the same way?

To remove the ashtray you first have to remove the gearknob gaiter trim.... Then the 2 x torx screws can be located...
