Title: Oil issues - Time & Distance
Post by: Tarmac_Terrorist on June 08, 2011, 11:12:48 pm
I've just had the last service on my 2 year service plan. Last year I supplied my own oil (longlife) but they told me at the time that they use longlife oil anyway now for T&D services. This year I decided not to supply my own oil and they've gone and filled it with the lesser stuff. I queried this and they said that they only use longlife on the longlife regime.
My father in law has the same service plan at the same dealer and after a bit of a stand off, they filled his with longlife oil!

I only do about 1000 - 2000 miles per year but it's the principal. The car only goes out about once or twice a month so i'm not unduly worried about engine wear. However, I want to challenge the dealer but be able to provide evidence if possible of the technical bulletin, which I believe came out a couple of years ago informing dealers that they should now fill with longlife oil for all types of service.

Can anyone point me in the right direction re this tech bulletin? copy / date  / number etc.

Correct. There was a TSB to state that longlife 3 oil should be used in all 2.0TFSI engines regardless of their service regime

Sounds like theyve pulled a fast one on you buddy!

Yeah, thought so! Cheers Alex - I don't think I should let them get away with it though.  :fighting:

Alex is right,
Even on the service plan my techs will automaticly put longlife in as the engines don't last on it!
If they don't want to do anything about it........try the windmill!! :fighting:

Last time I got my car serviced the arseholes at Arnold Clark used the cheaper stuff, at least they didn't cover it up when I queried it....they said they flushed and replaced with the correct stuff.

I am due a service soon, quite like the idea of supplying my own LL oil.... Is it edge 5w-30? And how many litres do I need?

Alex,
Have you got access to the actual TSB, I am surprsied by the number of dealers who are quite insistent that LL oil is only used on LL service regime and not T&D.

Too much inconsistency with VW dealers. Last week I asked them about cambelt replacement schedule and they told me 120k / 4years! I told them I'd read it was downgraded to 60k / 4 years, but they insisted they had the correct up-to-date info from VW.

Here's the oil specification sheet......its a recommendation for the oil but not a neccessity, as long as it meets the minimum standard.

And I've checked the toothed belt guide and yes, its still 120k miles or 4 years. Whichever comes first.

And am assuming it's absolutely fine!

So is the castrol edge 504 for sale in asda's for £30 for 4 litres ok? It doesn't specify 'longlife' on it but i presume its exactly the same.

The Fuchs says its meets "VW504" standard so yes!!  :drinking:

Personally I would put the highest grade oil in as it give the most protection.....I like my engine to keep working after the abuse I give it with my heavy right foot!!!  :happy2:

I've got some Millers cfs 5w40 triple ester to try, Hopefully it will help with short journey fuel dilution.

But you don't want "meets" -  you want "approved". But from what I recall, RR's best friend TT loved Fuchs too.

We used to argue like mad online sometimes and I'm not the only one to argue with TT but we always maintained a healthy respect for each other and got on well whenever we met in person. He's occasionally quite ill and disappears from here for long spells but this period of his absence has been the longest I think. I wonder how he is.

OK, just to update this thread. I called the dealer and ended upspeaking with the aftersales manager. He claimed that according to their computer my car did have the Longlife oil. I counter argued that on my invoice it said Total Quartz 5w30 T&D and the Longlife oil used box was not ticked on the service book. He said that the Total Quartz 5w30 is in fact the Longlife oil they use and as per the job sheet the Longlife oil was used. He offered to update my service booke if I call in with it.

If i'm honest I think he may be trying to pull the wool over my eyes - dunno?  My car covered less than 1,000 miles last year so i'm not overly worried if it is the lesser quality oil.

Thanks fior your help guys  :happy2:

The oil you mention is "approved" for VW long life. Iirc the time and distance oil is a 10w40......and the long life a 5w30. So it would sound like the correct lubrication has been used...?!?  :happy2:
