Have you looked in the insurance section on here. You need to do a bit of leg work and ring around.
-
Will check out the insurance board. Thanks. Still in tears
-
How about buying an older gti? Say 2006 and paying the insurance with the money you save.
Insurance companies always take the piss as you have no history of high performance cars, once you have a year under your belt in a high performance car you insurance should be more bearable. Good luck mate
-
Thanks Jk911. I'll try that. Did have my hopes pinned on a 2007/2008 :-(
-
So u can afford to buy and run a new mk6 Gti yet not afford the £1100 insurance? Is that right??
-
Ah. Corrected 2007, not 2011.
I can afford to buy because I saved. I will be in debt for a year and then after things should be fine. Sorry for the mistake

Don't get too hung up on getting an 07 one, I had an 05 one with lower mileage which was just as good as the 07 ones that were about, but £2000 cheaper. Plus it has the nice blue tint windows and no aerial (nicer touches which the newer ones did not have!)
-
Your probably right but I think age kills a car not the mileage so getting a newer one would be good. Will bear that in mind though. What mileage was it? The 2007 one I am looking at is 25,000.

....I'm reminded of Mick Jagger's words: "Time destroys a woman's face". I don't think it necessarily applies as strongly to cars though.
-
Thanks folks. Continuing this over in the Insurance area :happy2:
-
you can buy a new car with 40 000 on the clock that will be dead in no time, could have not been serviced, looked after properly,
Whereas you could get a car of the same age with 80 000 that will keep going for years.
Age does not determine how good a car is. My dad always told me, look after your car and your car will look after you.
Though he also told me I would amount to nothing.
-
Hi Mate,
try Bell insurance :happy2:
Im 24yrs old, 4yrs no claims and mine is around £740 fully comp (inc business use) with about 8k miles a year for a 57plate 5 door.
Ive found Bell to be great over the two years ive been with them, great customer service!

Have you thought about joining the institute of advanced motorists? Could probably pass your test in a couple months then you could use their insurance scheme: http://www.iamsurety.com/
Well worth doing anyway plus I'm paying £200 for full comp, business use, no-claims protected for my GTI through them.
-
sorry to thread hijack but Scotman how much did it cost you and how did you register for the IAM?
Cheers

That is just too good to be true. Will look into it but maybe a bit too much effort at this stage. Actually just got a phone call half an hour ago and the guy said the car I may have purchased has been bought. Aaaagghhh

Many thats a serious price! Waaay outa line! Premiums are definately up this year but thats :stupid:
I'm 32, NI based, one small accident last year but 9 years no claims and insured my 05 GTI for around the £750 mark.
Try Oakland insurance in Larne - work hard to get you something good. My policy is with aviva.
PM if you want a contact name or more.
Good luck with the shopping.

You can register online. From memory its about £100. Then join your local club for a small fee and observed runs and prep for test is usually free - its part of the club ethos to improve driving skills. Once your passed the test you may want to become an observer yourself to give something back - not obliged though!
-
Thanks justcallmeal. Will give those guys a call.
BTW. Hows your 2005 GTI running? Where'd you pick it up?
-
I feared the worst with my renewal this year but its just come through at £510 with elephant. Mods declared and 29 with only 3 years no claims. Must have a good post code i suppose?!
-
"Must have a good post code i suppose?!"
If your postcode is outside of Northern Ireland, it's a good postcode. Boy are we ripped off!
-
The key part of your post is "Live in NI".. we get raped over here for insurance :fighting:
I'm 33 and can insure an 06 GTI for £550 though so all is not lost.. try one of those price comparison sites comparethemeerkatmarket.com worked best for me and for the past 3 years Admiral have given the best quote.

Yep -= register on-line - looks like it's now £139 (http://www.iam.org.uk/do_you_want_to_be_a_better_car_driver_/doyouwanttobeabettercardriver.html) - think I got it for around £78 a couple years ago. No charge for observed runs (I had around 6 before my test) and no charge for the 1 hour plus final test with a serving traffic cop. Really enjoyed the experience and each time I went out with the observer then it lasted about an hour. Amazing how much you can still learn regardless of how good a driver you think you already are.

I am 41, >9 years no-claims and live in a low crime and nice part of Scotland, both my wife and I (she's also on the policy) are company directors, so probably pretty low overall on their risk register, hence the price.
-
Unfortunately NI isn't great for insurance! However your quotes do seem a bit excessive.
I'm 23 with 3yrs no claims and insured on my 06 GTI with directline for about £1300. I'm going to renew with Greenlight next month. A previous quote from them was in the region of £1100 for me. So I would imagine would be considerably less for you, given your age and experience.
My younger brother got a great quote through HIC for a modified 2.0TDI passat - with wheels, coilovers, stereo, xenons and everything else declared. They may be worth a try also.
-
you could maybe try tesco car insurance mate, im 23 and have 6 years no claims and iv got my gti dsg for 700
-
£1100? Pfft! Stop complaining. I moved to Brum and my premium went up to £2400! Because I'd moved part way through the policy, I had to suck it up and pay it. They wanted £3000 for the following year. That was directline.
Went for a mod-friendly company - both Skyinsurance and Brentacre wanted ~£700 . Unfortunately renewal this year is £840. Will see if I can phone around.

27, 3 years ncb, fully comp, UK, mk5 gti, £650. Calvin Klein

forgot to mention i have 3 points aswel!
-
@MPS Who's that with?
-
3 points doesn't really affect insurance in most cases, 6 points is when it starts to bother the pennies.

are you kidding? i was with Swift cover and i was 450 fully comp on my GTI and as soon as i got my 3 points they told me they could no longer insure me! its only an SP30 aswel, its affected my insurance pretty badly

Thanks justcallmeal. Will give those guys a call.

Picked mine up form a non VW dealer in Ballymena. Tornado red 5 door with pretty standard spec. Good clear car tho so chuffed. Guy used to own Edwins and sold it and now just trades a bit. Car is one owner and came from Cookstown.. It was a mummys run around and had under 50K on it. Pertty mint except for the odd stone chip.
Cars going great, starting to put some miles on it. New girlfriend is about 30 miles away so you can guess that combined with playing in a few bands is putting the miles on quicker than I hoped. Now sitting at 66K and going great.
Got coil packs done FOC thanks to this very helpful site. 40 mpg if you behave and if you dont, well, lets just say its low.
Give us a shout if you ever get sorted, always good to meet a local face
-
@MPS Who's that with?
cough*Chris Knott*cough
-
@MPS Ta!
@justcallmeal I'm car sharing at the moment so any car I get is going to have low miles when I come to sell. Who knows, once I get the GTI I might not be car sharing any more, or at least may be doing the driving all the time. :-) 40mpg sounds good. If you know of any good cars coming up for sale let me know. Just on the off chance.

Thats what I thought...
When I passed the IAM test I found most companies didn't want to know.
Premiums based on their claims data for cars, areas, driver experience not particularly interested in IAM.
Unless people quote the full facts in what they are paying i.e excesses on the policy both voluntary & mandatory, any mileage per year involved, garaged or not , postcode areas, these figures are pretty meaningless.
I'd still recommend IAM training though.
-
My details:
£1050 with Admiral - 27 years old, 5 years second driver no claims (made a difference of £500), up to 4000 miles/year, £500 excess (think half is voluntary), colour coded bumpers declared.
My area is medium to high risk as per this site: http://www.visitcars.co.uk/car-insurance/insurance-post-code-risk.html
Not bad considering I actually have 0 yrs no claims actually in my name and first time driving a ‘high performance’ car.
EDIT:
Regarding factory upgrades, do they need to be declared to the insurance company, mainly referring to the Monza II's?

I did get the premium from the offical IAM insurance scheme though.

@justcallmeal
Saw those thanks. Looking for 5 door with low mileage. Below 40,000 would be good and there should be a few out there, I hope.
Also this one but the mileage is crazy low...http://www.usedcarsni.com/72735069 Don't know why or how.
