Its not just a vcds job..

You need folding mirrors for this function, do you have them ?, they have a different motor in them with a memory function, that said very very rarely this part finds its way into a non folding mirror (i guess when they run out of the proper parts they use that one instead).

Thanks shaun.....i thought it wasnt that simple lol

Generally no its not normal, as i said though a few seem to have got it for some reason, the general rule though (Info from ETKA parts) is the memory function (dipping) comes with the folding mirror part, i even saw where a owner had folding mirrors but never knew as they didnt have the folding switch to operate it !!, they only discovered it when they took it apart and another forum poster saw the extra wiring that the folding mirrors have in them.

interesting I have the folding mirror but dont think I hae the auto dip.... cant see it inthe standard menu on the high line...
-
If you have factory fit PDC (reverse parking sensors) then you get the mirror down function as standard. Mine has it as do a few others that have the PDC from original spec.
-
Just about to say the exact same thing Alex, great minds and all that  Mirror down on early cars was only available with the PDC, it was never an option with folding that I'm aware of but I could be wrong.
On later cars i.e the mk6 the mirror dip seams to be the norm,
I'm the exception has I think I am the only one to retro fit it anywhere other than giving the info to Scott(Golfman) has he now has it.
It involves a new mk6 door controller with the mirror dip and some basic wire swapping and stuff,

thought my reverse sensor were factory... not sure how you can tell, but cant find anything in the menu to turn on the dipping mirror...

darren this is on a gt tdi with factory park sensors ....what do i do to activate it please
-
Like has been said mate not all cars had the mirror down even if PDC was factory, but it can be retrofitted, you can try and enable it in the convenience controller, VCDS it then if you have the highline computer it will show up in there? then you can turn it on and off.

I retro fitted electric folding mirrors and the module needs to have a secondary position sensor in it, every time I code it I get an error to say that Jxxx intermittent connection controller not found, so having folding mirrors doesn't pre-requisite reverse mirror dip, I think from some googling I did it might relate to the mirror motor itself (the half spherical thing you clip the mirror into) having a controller that is able to sense its position and store the co-ordinates in the door controller. but this is all speculation on threads read and experience with my coding attempts.

Your right Rich its the motor that moves the mirror, My mate had a mk6 Gti breaking and I happened to get the passenger controller and full mirror housing, I needed to add extra wiring into the mirror loom and change some pin outs on the controller and I had full folding with auto dimming and dipping plus puddle lights :happy2:

Hi guys,
I've got the mirror down on my 56 plate ED30. It has folding mirrors but no PDC :sad1:

if you have a max gen3 door controller that is the only require with the memory motor in the mirror
