Title: First worrying noise yet...
Post by: GTiBEER on June 12, 2011, 01:47:02 pm
Never had any problems with my 06 GTI she's been a beauty and so reliable so I was very surprised today to hear her panting like a dog today.

I had almost finished my 75 mile journey and I had been driving perfectly sensible as the weather was shi**y and at a set of lights near my home when i was stopped (still had her in D and just had my foot on the brake) it sounded like a dog panting. The rev counter wasn't moving so it wasn't the idling?

I am no mechanic and have no idea what it might be but I am hoping it is not the engine. Could it be an alternator or something? If it is still doing it when i turn her over in a bit I will record the sound and put it up online as I am sure someone has had a similar problem.

Any thoughts or ideas welcome  :sad1:

Could just be a belt making a noise temporarily after a good soaking, my van does it when the weather is really wet

My auxilary belt makes noise on start up and tickover, bugs me.  :fighting:

Due cambelt / waterpump & aux belt next week so hopefully will silence it!

Was the aircon on at the time?

Nope.  Have no condenser, havent got round to removing the compressor.  Need to figure out which shorter belt to use.

Day 2: Drove my girlfriend to the airport and it started off sounding a little iffy but thought it sounded better than yesterday so had high hopes it was a wet problem. When I had returned the car was much worse. When stationary it goes up and down to the point where it sounds like its about to cut out and then it starts revving up to 1300rpm up from 800rpm then it goes back to panting.

Driving today, for example coming off of the motorway up the slip road, when I wasn't accelerating it felt like it was slowing down slightly as if I had left the hand break on but not as severe. It definately feels like an engine problem now  :surprised:

I have recorded a sound bite but uploading it isn't a easy as I thought. Any ideas on how i can upload a sound bite to this forum?

just a speculation but erratic idle has to point towards PCV fairly cheap fix, loss of vacum on idle cause issues.

Can you tell me what a PCV is and how i might diagnose it?

Spot on, had the intake valve thing (PCV) replaced and it is back to normal. £55 parts & labour. It got so bad it started cutting out when stopped. Now all I have to do is sort out my AC and I am back to normal.

Thanks @RICHN83 & @Boothy I have given thanks to both of you for your spot on advice  :drinking:

I have had it refilled three times now by my mech and after he has filled it when I get home I can hear a hissing sound. you can see this white cap through the front grille hissing and bubbling with fluid. To be fair the AC did blow cold for about two weeks then it stops all together working just slightly warmer than the outside temperature. Any idea how much it costs for a new condenser unit?
